Forgive me, but You're an Old Detroiter if:

You took a "moonlight cruise" to Bob-lo with Captain Bob-lo or went to Edgewater amusement Park.

You remember the big stove that was on Jefferson Ave. at the entrance to Belle Isle.

You shopped at Hughes and Hatcher, B. Siegel, Peck and Peck, Himelhoch's,Robert Halls, Crowley's, Shoppers Fair, EJ Korvettes or Federals.

You rode the elevator at J. L. Hudson, which was "run" by an elevator operator with her white gloves on.

You remember a Winkleman's and Sanders store in your neighborhood.

You remember the "Big Snow", Buffalo Bob, Howdy Doody, Clarabell, PhineasT. Bluster, and Princess Summer-Fall-Winter-Spring.

You remember Twin Pines Dairy delivered milk and juice to the chute on the side of your house and Milky the Clown performed magic with the magic Words, "Twin Pines".

You remember the Good Humor man in a white uniform, ringing the bells and driving down your street.

You remember the Olympia Stadium.

You remember when Vernor's  was made  on Woodward Ave.  and a bearded troll was on the bottle.

Your mom got groceries at Great Scott, Food Fair, Wrigley's or Chatham.

Your mom saved Holden Red Stamps, S&H Green Stamps, or Gold Bell Gift Stamps and you licked the stamps and put them in those little books.

Kresge's and Woolworth's were "DIME STORES".

You had an Uncle in the furniture business (Joshua Doore).

You know who Bill Kennedy is.

You remember this telephone number:  Tyler 8-7100 (Belvedere Construction) and the slogan "We do good work".

Your phone number may have started with Tyler, Vermont, Broadway,Kenwood,Diamond, Webster, Dunkirk, Warwick, Vinwood, Townsend, University orTrinity.

You saw the Detroit Lions play football in Tiger Stadium.

You remember Black Bart and the Faygo pop song.  Or how  about "Which way did they go?  Which way did he go?  He went for Faygo, old fashion root beer".

You watched Rita Bell's Prize Movie in the mornings.

You know who Sonny Elliot is.  Do you remember Sonny using chalk on a map of Michigan?

You remember Jack LeGoff and Van Patrick.

You remember Milky the Clown, Soupy Sales, Johnny Ginger, Poopdeck Paul and Captain Jolly, Fred Wolf from the whacky wiggloo.

You visited the Wonder Bread Bakery and got to take home a mini loaf of bread.

Your address had a two-digit "zone" before there were zip codes. Detroit19, Michigan.

You remember "Get on the right track at 9 Mile and Mack, to get the best deal in town.  Roy O'Brian...it's the best deal in town".

Your house had a laundry chute and a milk chute and a coal chute.

You remember going to Detroit Edison with your mom to exchange burned out light bulbs for new ones.

Remember when CKLW gave away a dozen roses at Christmas to your sweetheart when you were a certain caller? I do believe that was in the early to mid 70's -

It was fun to watch baseball (have the Tigs last their 100th game yet?) Bunch of overpaid babies - only thing I watch anymore is hockey - and I wish they would replace the JOE - what a dump.

When I took Biology at Seaholm, the teacher (name escapes me) was into creating self contained aquariums. He would seal a large jar with the right mix of water, plants & fish to see how long he could get it to last before it all died. I think he had one going for a couple of years... Was that your dad?

Oh, I remember who John and Marilyn were - and it wasn't a bad show - folks just didn't talk about it back then.

My wife lived in Farmington Hills; and she graduated with Pam Dawber (Mindy of Mork and Mindy fame). Imagine her surprise back in the 80's to learn (in an interview)that Pam was four years younger than my wife. And I don't think were talking "gifted" here. LOL

I'm glad I am now a Texan, but this thread brings back a *lot* of memories from when I was growing up.

Anyone remember when John Kelly made a face in what he thought was a dead camera? (Stuck his thumbs in his ears and waggled his fingers while he stuck out his tongue. Apologized at the end of the broadcast.)

Does anyone else remember listening to Mike Wharf's radio show, or "Music Till Dawn" on WJR?

God, I feel old now.

We had both University and Diamond.

BTW, Ernie Harwell has twin daughters. I regularly attended a weekly prayer breakfast with one of them, who still stays in touch by e-mail. Great family!

Apparently so. According to the WXYZ-TV website, "John Kelly and Marilyn Turner live in Florida." A 1996 article I found referred to "Marilyn Turner and her husband John Kelly" sueing Turner's son. If they were still married in '96 they are probably still married today.

Mosty I remember frog hunts.

He'd pack us, and the kids across the street into the car, take us to Kensington and we would catch frogs. Dozens of frogs. ( this was back in the 60's so no animal rights groups to complain) Anyway, we would load the frogs into cardboard boxes and then take them home, where we kids had a wonderful time playing with them. My mother was les than thrilled.

Of course, on Monday, Dad would take them all to work with him and it wasn't until years later that I figured out that the frogs were going to be pithed and disected. by his students.

I remember John Kelly and the face. They were more innocent days. Now unless a celeb is spewing obscenity, no one even blinks! LOL! We listened to WJR religeously at our house.

I think that was "Adventures in Good Music." It started with a theme taken from Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata (second movement AIR). It is still running -- on of all places NPR. Or rather I have heard it on NPR stations both in Houston and when I lived in East Texas (either the Tyler station or Kilgore, don't remember which).

Last time was about 6 weeks back when I was in a Half-Price Books at lunchtime. It was ol' Karl. Don't know whether it was new or a canned show. (Karl must have forty plus years in the can.) But it *was* Karl Hass.

Who was the Bing Crosby kinda-soundalike that was on before Hass on WRJ? His show was on between J.P. McCarthy's and Haas's, but I don't remember when.
