Poll Names McClintock as Winner of the Debate

State Senator Tom McClintock came out on top in a poll that gauged public reaction to Wednesday's candidate debate.

A News10/SurveyUSA poll found that 30 percent of California voters felt McClintock won the debate. Twenty-two percent of those questioned said Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante was number one, while 12 percent named Peter Ueberroth as the winner. Arianna Huffington was favored by nine percent of those surveyed, while three percent said Peter Camejo won.

As evidence that the election is still very much up for grabs, the survey found 24 percent of voters either undecided about the winner of the debate or with no favorite.

The poll showed that Arnold Schwarzenegger's decision to skip the debate may have been costly. Fifty-five percent of voters felt it was the wrong thing to do, while 37 percent approved of the actor's absence. Eight percent had no opinion.

According to the survey, Gov. Gray Davis' half-hour appearance prior to the debate may not have improved his chances of avoiding recall. About a third of those surveyed, 36 percent, said the question-and-answer session caused their opinion of Davis to fall. Seventeen percent came away from the telecast with a better impression of the governor, while 46 percent said their opinion was unchanged.

,

The poll questioned 1,444 registered California voters in the hours immediately following the debate. Margin of error for the survey is %.1 percent.

I almost choked on my ham and eggs this morning. The local paper(Times-Standard) had a front page AP story about Arnold missing the debate. Near the end was this strangler...F Warren Hellman is on Arnolds "council" and on Thursday Hellman donated $50,000 to the Save Davis Recall Committee. There was not a link to the story but I'm sure someone could check the state campaign donations web site to verify it.

Sacramento bumbling Bee is...just screwed up

They have really gone downhill since they hired the homo to be their editor.

I'm still gonna vote for McClintock!

It will be interesting to see which way the media swings when gov. doofus signs the bill letting anybody get a California driver's license in about an hour. Somehow I don't think it will go over well with most of the current, legal voters. I support a referendum on that one.

I know, it's more direct democracy but the California Republic is being held hostage and there is no other (non-violent) way.

Judging by the vehemence I've witnessed here, I think there are more than a few McClintock-is-great-but-can't-win-so-I'm-voting-for-Arnold types who would actually be upset if McClintock won because it would destroy their egos to have been wrong.

Not all of them, but some.

Its really strikes how some of those we are
conservatives but voting for Arnold cause
only he can win, get so ugly in their
attack on McClintock like they hate
what he stands for.

I just can't forget how fast and how tightly wound the government unions got over Prop 226

There's another structural change that needs to happen. I'm for busting these unions. They are NOT in the public interest. I still say that all of the union members should be fired...ala PATCO.

But that kind of thing is not widespread
and think that's part of what happens in a
forum like this were we have "reputations
at stack.

I think most Arnold's followers will
quickly leave him for Tom McClintock
once they see polls showing Tom can win
as he passes Arnold.

By September 24 and the next debate Arnold
will fighting for life and it will be do
or do time in that debate and Tom
will hammer him and Arnold support will
completely collapse into single digits
prehaps even below 5%.

And with Cruz being a Mecha racist
and having Davis around his neck and so on
Arnold supporters will not being voting for
him. I suspect less than 1 in 10
current Arnold supporters might switch to
Cruz prehaps almost none.

McClintock very well may do it. He may
do it by a clear margin even.

If Tom passes up Arnold and race starts to
becomes Tom and Cruz then the focus can move
form Arnold's endless baggage to Cruz' Mecha
racism and his other problems.

Cruz and Davis can yell right wing radicial
or whatever but that can't match the failure
of Davis and Cruz's policies and Cruz being
a bigot.

Only Arnold can put Cruz in.

But I predict Tom about to pass Arnold up now
and then on September 24 totally finish him off
and defeat Cruz in the election.

I am a McClintock supporter. If he is not "close" by Oct. 5, then I will vote for Ahhnold.

One can only pray that this is true...it would increase the odds of change.

It certainly is to some extent. I've talked to several people who were convinced of it. Several of them were anti-recall so I didn't correct their thinking. :=)

Yes, so true. As I've said a million times... "Politics is the only way to change things without killing people!"

Bustamante is the only Democrat on the ballot

In fact, there are 43 Democrats on the ballot.

The largest representation of any single party.

I found McClintock to be way better than Uberoth and Bustamante is a commie with patience.

My favorite RAT is:

Edward Kennedy, yes he is running for California Governor!!!

I believe we should all support him, by passing out flyers, putting up signs in heavily Democratic areas in L.A. and S.F.

Actually it is NOT TRUE that Bustamonte is the only Democrat on the ballot. There are about 40 democrats on the ballot.
It IS TRUE that Bustamonte is the only really HIGH PROFILE democrat on the ballot, i.e., the only one who will get a double-digit percentage of the vote.

I know! I went the politics route believing I could improve things... I moved the ball so far down the field that they're still trying to bring it back five years after I got voted off the island and left office!!!

The point is... They are bringing it back, and then some. They are relentless, remorseless, RUTHLESS PEOPLE!!! The will stop at NOTHING!!! Neither do they have any shame!!! They are demonic possessed, thus I dub them Demonicrats!!!

tubebender, I've checked the site but come up empty. It could be that the contribution has not been entered on the site yet. They have anywhere from 24 hours to 10 days. I will keep checking.

I found some other interesting data. The 'Lungren Committee for Common Sense Conservatism' gave Gray Davis 10,000 dollars. The Republican Central Committees of three counties (Nevada, Colusa and San Luis Obispo) also gave money to him early in the recall process.

I could be wrong but I think information like this deserves its own thread. That's obscene.
