B'nai Brith Canada today announced the launch of a campaign to inform members of Toronto's Jewish community about the activities of "Jews for Jesus."
Calling it the "Proud to be Jewish" Campaign," B'nai Brith's goal is to warn members of the Toronto Jewish community about the presence and methods of the missionary group and to advise them of their rights.
"This isn't about free speech," said Rochelle Wilner, president of B'nai Brith Canada. "Targeted missionizing, especially when done in a manner calculated to deceive the unsuspecting, is offensive to our community. Christianity is not a branch of Judaism it's a different religion altogether, and any attempt to portray it as anything but a different religion is subterfuge. "The term 'Jews for Jesus' makes about as much sense as 'Baptists for Buddha' or 'Catholics for Krishna,'" she said.
"We didn't want this to be just another lesson in how to answer," said Frank Dimant, executive vice president.
"Some in our community are simply not capable of countering missionaries because they have received little formal Jewish education.
"We want members of our community to know that they don't have to defend Judaism to Christian missionaries they have an absolute right to not be subjected to these ministrations in the first place."
Dr. Charles McVety, president of Canada Christian College and a leader in Canada's evangelical Christian community, spoke as well. "As a committed Christian I support the idea of preaching Christianity, but preaching Christianity under the guise of Judaism to those who are in fact seeking Judaism, is plainly wrong," said McVety.
"We unequivocally denounce any and all deceptive tactics."

The most accurate (IMO) description of the birth of Christianity that I've heard was that it was a 'schism' in Judaism.
My understanding, if they're honest, that would be a small number.
It is not fair to say that a Jew that converts to Christianity is no longer a Jew.

Shouldn’t potential Jewish converts be warned that, while they may accept Jesus as the messiah, when it’s convenient, they’re Jews.
Has it changed its approach in the last few years? It used to be that all they did was stand on street corners and hand out leaflets that explained how Jesus fulfilled the Jewish prophecies of a Messiah. They answered questions, and put up with a lot of abuse from people who didn't understand what they were doing. They were accused of being "traitors" to their Jewishness.
But, if I recall correctly, Jesus was a Jew, preached and taught to Jews, lived in a Jewish world, read the Torah in Jewish synagogues, and died as a Jew.
Laugh if you will, but God in the Bible considered Himself to be the Jews protector. There were a lot of warnings to the Jews about being sent into exile if they didn't obey Him and listen to Him. And there were also warnings about having their protection removed. I'm not saying that God caused the Holocaust, but without God's intervention and protection, evil people can do some really nasty things. You can't be familiar with the Old Testament at all and miss this theme.

It's rather hard for Jews to understand. Perhaps its just the name. They are not "Jews for Jesus", they are Christians for Jesus. Mort "Moishe" Rosen, the founder of Jews for Jesus, is a minister ordained in 1957, who has led Christian congregations. This is not a Jewish group. So why the word games? Very silly, but I guess he must have had a history in marketing beforehand. I have no problem with it, and don't understand the nasty replies, just trying to explain why some Jews get so irritated with JFJ.

Saying that anyone who doesn't practice the Jewish religion is not a Jew, is like saying that anyone who isn't Anglican is not English.
What makes you think that Jew refers only to the religion and not the people of Jewish heritage? Jew after all is derived from Judah which was one of the twelve tribes of Israel. It's been used to describe descendants of Judah and Israel for at least 2500 years, regardless of their religion.
