WASHINGTON (CNN) --With one recent poll showing actor Arnold Schwarzenegger falling behind Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante in California's gubernatorial recall race, some top Republicans are urging other GOP candidates to drop out of the race.
Businessman Bill Simon, the GOP nominee against Gov. Gray Davis last year, dropped out over the weekend. But Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock says he's in the race for good. McClintock, in Sacramento, California, spoke with CNN's Judy Woodruff on Tuesday. The following is an edited transcript.

One who makes a living predicting outcomes gives Gray Davis better odds of beating the recall than Tom McClintock does of winning it (8 to 1 for Gray and 12 to 1 for Tom). He also says that Ariana Huffington (10 to 1) and Peter Ueberroth (6 to 1) have better odds than Tom.
The front-runners?
Arnold (1 to 10) and Cruz (3 to 2).

That is not the issue. In fact, most in the forum would agree that Arnold is a RINO, however his business background and statements concerning the budget don't send me into conservative seizures. In fact, after listening to his press conference concerning the CA economic situation I felt that he has the leadership ability to solving the problems in CA's budget in a much more conservative way than a Cruz Administration would. The race is between Arnold and Cruz.
The Hollywood leftist elite (Martin Sheen, Ed Asner, Susan Sarandon) is bashing Arnold, while Art Torres and Jerry Brown are boosting TM.
Arnold can win, and the Left knows it.

I think he's waiting for the Davis people to get the sezual harassment dirt out on Arnold, hoping he'll get knocked out. If Arnold doesn't lose his standing from the coming onslought, McClintock will drop out with about two weeks to go.
Davis is not going to play his dirt card until later in the race. I'd guess its going to get dirty in about 3-4 weeks. McClintock just wants to see how Arnold fares. He'll be a team player when the time comes. It's still early.

In
NORMAL , non " special " elections...after wining a primary AND having a much longer pre-election time, as well as NOT having to run against a DEM and other GOPers.
Now, add to all of the above, the number of Californians ( Conservatives/GOPers ) who have left the state and the number of Hispanics, who have moved in, during the past 40 years. Oh yes, and the number of actual CONSERVATIVE GOP voters, in the movie industry, who have been replaced by faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar lefties.
This nose counting, is part of politics and has absolutely nothing to do with wishful thinking.

So he lied in the interview, you suppose?
To: Cathryn Crawford
McClintock has a real platform, a well enumerated platform. A platform which will recieve zero Democratic support. Even if he could get elected, which he can't, he could not get a single thing through the legislature.

Wishful thinking, indeed. Since Ghengis Khan isn't in the race, can't I just write him in? ;-)

McClintock is assuring that Cruz Bustamante will be the next Governor of California.
No, a majority of voters will decide that.
McClintock is the best candidate for the job and I and many californians will be voting for the best candidate. Arnold is a joke and his advisors are mostly liberals. I don't want a liberal republican in office because my values are conservative first. Many conservative californians have enough integrity to vote for the best conservative candidate and not for the popular RINO lunkhead. Arnold is bad for california and bad for the republican party.

Sure ... what the heck. Write in Ronald Reagan, even, who isn't as Conservative as the " purists " here are. LOL
To: ambrose
That is NOT applicable and a stretch. LOL
Should Cruz win, you and the rest of Tom's rabid supporters here, better NOT even dare to whinge about it. K ?

It is a bit much to ask a candidate to admit that he will drop out if he is behind at the end. But is I was McClintock I would have challenged Arnold to agree that the guy behind in the polls would drop out at the end, based on some criteria. I would have lanced the boil. JMO.

If Cruz wins, so be it. Jimmy Carter's win in '76 paved the way for the Reagan Revolution. In retrospect, the defeat of the liberal and inept Ford was a blessing in disguise.

And the destruction done, for
EIGHT YEARS , by the Clintons and their horde, will take decades, if ever to fix. Carter may have " paved the way " for the Reagan Revolution, but we are STILL payaing for his 4 long years as president.
Let me ask you one query. How delighted are YOU,with what Davis has done ?
To: Those_Crazy_Liberals
The irony here is that, even if McClintock stays the course, he will lose a substantial portion of his poll #s OVERNIGHT before the election, as voters migrate to Arnold, seeing that he CAN win. The tragedy would be if McClintock's reduced numbers still rob Arnold, and the People of California, of a Governor who will inject some fiscal sanity.
THAT is why a) McClintock CANNOT win under any plausible scenarios, and b) why McClintock needs to get out at some point and endorse Arnold.
Otherwise his political future is zilch. Now, maybe he thinks, OK, I'll lose and elect Busty, then run again and beat him in 2007. This would be an example of elevating selfish goals ahead of the people's interests and would GUARANTEE that McClintock would have ZIPPO chance in 2007.
So, his political future is clouded - his best bet - cut a deal with Arnold that could get him visibility and a REAL shot at the "BIG TIME" after Arnold's term ends.
*WHEW* At least that is how I see it. Arnold's got my vote because he can be more effective than ANYONE else by "going over the people's heads" and using his HUGE popularity to force the Rats in Sacto to toe the fiscally sane line.
CAN he do it? I think he can. I am willing to take a chance. I traded Rick Perry (Gov - TX) for Grayout Doofus when I moved here last Fall, and saw the ENTIRE GOP list go down in flames. Enough to get the hair standing up on the neck of this ex-patriate Texan. I'll do anything to prevent a Rat-Traitor-Commie like Bustamante from winning. Including voting for Arnold.
Face it folks - you're not in Texas anymore - your (our) state is populated by lunatics (I give as an example my well-off lawyer cousin in law in LA who fancies himself a "moderate" - only because his wife, my cousin, is an out-and-out Leftist. Who does he think was a great president, loved by everyone? A:Comrade Clinton.)
If this is what passes for "moderation" here in The People's Republic of Kalifornia, my friends, you need to WAKE UP and vote for the ONLY MAN who CAN win:
THE TERMINATOR!!!

McClintock has a real platform, a well enumerated platform.Well, his platform is nice and dandy and honestly I like it my self if you ask me.
Now, if my memory serves me right, the Democrats (not all mind you), have principles as well, but, they have one thing in common that we Republicans fail to understand time and time again;...the "Winning" factor.
They (the Democrats) will gang together, Liberals, Blue Dogs, Reagan Dems etc., swallow their pride hold their noses and...voila, they control the Legislature up and down to the lowest level, while the Republicans are holding their collective principled bags.
If Mr. McClintock is dicking around under the loosing principled mantra, we not only going to end up with that Mexican racist Bustamante but he definitely will put a giant and final nail in his political career for being the one who denied the Republicans a foothold in the California's Governor's Seat (the easiest in a century), a springboard for possible GOP gains in the 2004 and beyond elections.
P.S.
NOTE
This election will be decided in SoCal, not in California at large!
