Geoghan killed in prison (Boston Herald)
Breaking news/by Eric Convey
Saturday, August 23, 2003
Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.
``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.
``Our investigation continues,'' she said.
The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.
Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.
More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.
Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.
Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.
The parents are suing Nambla and the ACLU is defending Nambla.
Another father is being sued by some arm of the education department in Massachussets. He recorded a class they were giving to educators on how to teach sex education to teens. One part of it tells them how to "fist".The program presenters are claiming he had no "right" to record this class.
If all the fire and righteous indignation on this thread were redirected to attacking the problem at its roots,we might expect a better, kinder less dangerous world for our children. There are none so blind as those that will not see.
No,the problem in the Catholic Church in this country is after the initial infiltration with men of a different ideology, usually communist, they stacked the deck and filled the seminaries with homosexuals. Those are the crimes which we read about daily, most of them from twenty, thirty years ago.
Molestations, abuses, rapes and genital contact with teen agers is the big problem. And the perpetrators are homosexuals who seek to recruit and satisfy their desire for youth and beauty with the same act.
The media after breaking the story, suddenly realized if the truth were told, their own "pet perverts"would be exposed. It is a slow and grueling and embarrassing process but slowly people are waking up. The bishops and there are probably about 25 of them, who are working from within to destroy the Church must be outed. Everyone in dioceses who are infested should hold the bishop accountible, let them know with postcards about how you feel. But please be careful to pray and discern,it doesn't help anything to accuse men who are not guilty of protecting and covering up.
So December, the liberals have called attention to the problem but it was an unintended consequence of a different plan. There are some conservative bishops who did try for many reasons;thinking they were protecting society with treatment and keeping them under surveillance, believing the mental health experts and others just trying to protect the Church. Lot of reasons, lots of mistakes but the bottom line was/is the liberals in the media love everything about this except for worrying that too many people are going to start goring their ox before they completely implement their agenda. But we need to work harder and smarter or they will succeed.
I join with those who hold that a vow before and to God can only be relinquished by death.
I believe the Church is obliged to defrock any one who, having received the Sacrament of Holy Orders, chooses to violate both his sacred oath to God, as well as the sacred trust bestowed upon him by the faithful, by uncontrollably acting to fulfill a sin of lust.
I have been posting my idea of the perfect punishment for the bishops who covered repeatedly, and have recruited homosexual priests and provided them with retreats which offer,"The homosexual,God's gift to the priesthood"(yes,I haave a copy that someone retrieved from their employer's desk)but no one has ever seemed to see the beauty of my plan but I am not deterred from presenting it. Eventually it should catch on.
I thought they should be stripped and loaded naked onto cattle cars and sent city to city across the country. All citizens could go down and jeer and spit and ridicule and shout at them for as long as they needed to vent and then the cattle car should be hooked up with the engine and to the next city the whole kit and caboodle of them would go.I have a good time imagining the 25 or so of them who would be riding on that cattle car.
Another newspaper article cited something from Geoghan's "treatment" record in which he stated that he had never been abused. Like beauty, however, abuse is sometimes in the mind of the beholder. I recall an op ed in the Boston Herald written by a college student during the height of the scandal, in which the kid argued that it would be wrong to get rid of homosexual priests, because of a homosexual priest who had helped him "come to terms" with his own homosexuality.
IMO, Geoghan was soft as a grape, in the old 60s phrase. Law's handling is not so easily excused. I recall the main impression I got from Geoghan's sentencing was that this was the first time he had been told that what he was doing was wrong. It took a Massachusetts judge to break it to him??!
Yet another woe that "lies too deep for any cure but the Cross" (Robert Farrar Capon's phrase).
That's the one. At the local YMCA.
and if he said it to the wrong person or persons, in da joint.
Seems unlikely. He apparently had no interest in adults or teenagers.
Indeed, they have a tricky balancing act, condemning the Church (rightly) for this, while working to lower the age of consent and remove pedophilia from the list of mental illnesses.
I agree. And spare a prayer, if you can, for his sister. She is quite elderly (and apparently doesn't have a clue either); she was at his trial -- alone -- every day, and maintained his innocence. I feel very sorry for her.
We got ya', you dirty rat you!
Too funny.
