Geoghan killed in prison (Boston Herald)
Breaking news/by Eric Convey
Saturday, August 23, 2003
Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.
``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.
``Our investigation continues,'' she said.
The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.
Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.
More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.
Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.
Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

I agree. but that's what's happening now.Don't forget that this has been going on for decades, and probably longer, and includes the eras in which society was much more conservative than it is now.
Can you imagine a Catholic boy in the 50's complaining about the trusted priest touching and sucking his what? Or worse? See what I mean?

He probably asked for it by trying to do to a fellow prisoner what he had been doing to young boys. That's what I was thinking. With homosexuality being a mental disease, this stuff doesn't go away until they consciously decide it wiil.

We know that Geoghan did not repent for many years, as he raped and molested young boys unabated for 30 years. He stopped only when he was sent to prison.
Deathbed repentance? Maybe. He didn't have much time -- died almost instantly. Who knows but God?
Read about his abominations, and the abominable Bishops who guarded and protected him:
Cardinal will face questions on Geoghan case under oath
Boston Herald ^ | January 11, 2002 | Marie Szaniszlo
Two days after a former priest goes on trial next week for allegedly molesting one of scores of children at Boston-area parishes, Bernard Cardinal Law could be forced for the first time to reveal under oath exactly what he knew about John Geoghan's three-decade career of alleged pedophilia.
Law is scheduled to undergo questioning Wednesday by the attorney for 118 people suing the archbishop because he transferred Geoghan from one parish to another in 1984, after being warned that he could be putting more children in danger.
``The goal is to gather information as to who knew what when, and who did what when,'' attorney Mitchell Garabedian said yesterday.
Although the date is subject to change, the deposition in the civil suit would mark one of the first times a Roman Catholic archbishop in the United States has been compelled to testify under oath in such a case, and would come two days after the start of what promises to be one of the most closely watched criminal trials involving alleged pedophilia by a clergy member.
Geoghan, 66, faces one count of indecent assault and battery in Middlesex Superior Court Monday for allegedly abusing an 11-year-old boy at the Waltham Boys and Girls Club in 1991. A separate criminal case is scheduled to go to trial next month in Suffolk Superior Court.
In documents filed this week, Garabedian posed 28 questions about the archdiocese's knowledge of Geoghan's activities, including psychiatric evaluations he underwent and counseling he received, from 1962 to 1995, when he was finally removed from his duties as a priest.
In addition to Law, Garabedian also plans to depose five of his former subordinates who supervised Geoghan over the years before they went on to serve in other parts of the country: Bishops Thomas V. Daily of Brooklyn, N.Y.; William F. Murphy of Rockville Center, N.Y.; John B. McCormack of Manchester, N.H.; Robert J. Banks of Green Bay, Wis.; and Alfred C. Hughes of New Orleans.
At an extraordinary press conference this week, Law conceded his handling of the allegations against the former priest was ``in retrospect, tragically incorrect,'' but argued that he transferred Geoghan from St. Brendan's parish in Dorchester to St. Julia's in Weston only after receiving medical assurances that it was safe to do so.
Records, however, show that Geoghan was actually cleared by the archdiocese's consultants after he had already been at the Weston parish for a month. And victims' advocates note that Law might easily have prevented any further abuse, had he erred on the side of caution or contacted authorities, rather than keeping the allegations secret.
At this week's press conference, the cardinal apologized to Geoghan's alleged victims and announced a new policy requiring all of the Boston archdiocese's clergy, employees and volunteers to report allegations of abuse.
The policy would make clergy subject to the same state law teachers, social workers and other professionals are by requiring them to report any reasonable suspicion of abuse. But it exempts any information obtained during the course of a confession and does not apply to past cases of abuse.
Since the mid-1990s, more than 130 people have come forward with allegations that Geoghan fondled or raped them when they were as young as 4 years old, before he was permanently removed from the priesthood in 1998 at Law's request.

If there were such a working cure, what would it look like? An exorcism. Maybe the church let this man down in a very fundamental way because the power is all but gone.
If Jesus walked the earth today, what could/would he have cured and what not, and why or why not?

A fellow poster made me realize that my reply post to you was over the top, especially owing to the point I was trying to get across in my previous posts. So I want to apologize to you for my rude reply.

People in jail hate pedophiliacsYeah.
I am sure it is the Convicts' obsession with right and wrong that makes them hate pedophiles--and not the need to justify their desire to torture and to kill someone weaker than they are.
To: FITZ
I think many of these bishops actually believe a pedophile can just quit so they crossed their fingers and covered up. I think many of these bishops probably committed the same crimes, so they were sympathetic, not to mention not wanting to be exposed by their angry underlings. The problem is systemic.

I think that it is terrible that this man was murdered in prison. I think that there should be an investigation into the prison system in the United States by an international human rights commission.
The prisons are cesspools. If they incarcerate a person then they SHOULD PROTECT THEM FROM BEING MURDERED!!!!!

Jesus said that those who follow him would do the four things that he did: heal the sick, raise the dead, speak in tongues(?), help the poor(?). I can't really remember exactly, but it's in the New Testament, naturally.
Can anyone remember, off the cuff?

I'll bet the queer hit on a straight guy, and "deeply offended" him. LOL.

If Jesus walked the earth today, what could/would he have cured and what not, and why or why not? The Bible doesn't talk about Him even trying to cure any pedophiles. Some adulteresses, thieves and that kind of thing.

one of the innocent people who are sent to prisonI wonder how many of them get killed by the other prisoners. The guy in this article isn't close to being innocent, Dahmer wasn't. I think the criminals probably even know who is evil to the core.

Exactly my point. The only reason he stopped was because there were no little boys around. His youngest known victim was four years old! What a disgusting beast. I'm personally glad someone put him down.

Can you imagine a Catholic boy in the 50's complaining about the trusted priest touching But that kind of thing happens in families too ----- how many coverups involved someone's uncle? Or a family friend? For the same reasons. Many people don't and haven't realized how very dangerous all pedophiles are. They've got released sex offenders and child sex offenders in every zip code in this area. The judges aren't keeping these guys behind prison walls, everyone seems to think they can just stop.

Believe it or not, just because a convicted criminal has committed a crime, it doesn't mean that they have no sense of right and wrong. Have you ever done anything wrong? Most folks have. They know what they've done is wrong, but they did it regardless, trying to "beat the system" for some temporary gain.
Even some of the worst thieves and murderers would not dare harm a child like some of these "holy men" have, directly, deliberately and systematically.

No state should carry out the death penalty.
Since a killer violates the civil rights of a victim by denying them the right to life, liberty and the pusuit os happiness. The federal government should perform all executions. No state would be safe from killings.
A murderer would not be safe from death by crossing the state lines.
Death by hanging or firing squad since drugs are bad and electric chair uses energy.

The Lord works in strange ways. the Lord did not kill Father Goegan, some filthy scumbag, reprobate did. And the so-called guards just didn't give a damn.
Wow what a deterrent the law has! All they have to do is threaten someone with prison now and people are terrified that they will get put there and be tortured by demented monsters. I especially feel sorry for white men who get thrown into those hell pits.

The church teaches an "
all powerful, ever-living God".
The gospel of John tells us that if everything Jesus did were written down, they would fill a lot of books or the books wouldn't contain it all. We aren't told what all the devils cast out by Jesus were.
We are told "the demon entered Judas". What if Judas had acknowledged his temptation and asked Jesus for help?
When Jesus does touch on the subject, if indeed it was this subject, he didn't spell it out explicitly for us, perhaps because these matters were so sensitive they weren't discussed publicly but very privately and would not have been consigned to the written word.
The bible tells us that he healed all the people who asked him, usually with a prerequisite of faith on the part of the person or an intercessor.
There but by the grace of God go any number of us.

"Conservatives believe in rule of law, not vigilanteism. Those of you cheering make me sick, you give conservatives a bad name!" I have agree with you on the merits. But this pervert caused more damage and verbal persecution of the Catholic Church than anyone else in history. You could cause the harm he perpetrated on the Church had you sat for 40 years and tried to devise a plan of destruction. There are are many Catholic priests out there who won't wear the Roman collar in public for fear of their safety. There isn't a day that goes by that the Catholic-bashing media don't have a feast on the homosexual rapes of minors that worms like Geogan performed. It's hard to feel much sympathy for this demon. May God have mercy on him.
