Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

In total agreement. Hard labor is a disincentive (sp?; word?) for a criminal.

But boy, I've got to say that something has to be done about the way in which defense, prosecuting attorneys, and judges approach the law.

For example, let's say a 4th Amendment right is violated. If indisputable evidence is uncovered in such a violation. The evidence should stand, and the transgressor of the amendment punished.

I'm not sure how we got to the 'it depends on what the meaning of 'is' is state of justice. I'd like to blame it on that reprobate Clinton, but unfortunately, it predates him and his accursed reign.

But that's just an example, and I'm willing to be educated if I'm missing the greater 'judicial' picture by my 4thA illustration. But something has to be done to get swift, ponderous and burdensome convictions.

I know I'm welcome, because once a Catholic always a Catholic. I just got tired of all the liturgical abuses. I had a chance to go to Latin Mass(held at a VFW post for pete's sake), but all I had was a winter dress. I didn't want to go in shorts. It gets pretty hot in the desert, ya know? I think a fitting punishment for the perpetrator would be to reprimand him and then quietly transfer him to another prison.

My guess is the perp is already in for life, so there's not much of anything they can do to him in the peace-loving, no-death-penalty People's Republic of Massachusetts. He had nothing to lose by killing Priest Pedo.

They prey on weaker inmates. In this case it happened to be an inmate who deserved to be executed by the State. In another case it could be the torture or rape of a Freeper arrested for freeping Hillary Clinton or the child of a Freeper arrested for drunk driving. You can't support the culture and then be surprised when it permeates your world. The correct solution is to make the punishment fit the crime and to carry out the punishment with due process. He should have been executed by the State. There is no other proper outcome.

A law that says that sodomy is no crime is unlikely to punish people for sodomy, even against children. Remember the case of the two kids who kiled their father at the urging of their father's homosexual lover, who had also been bonging the kids. The guy got off and almost no concern that he had be spdomizing the kids. Sodomy is only evil when it is done by priests: that's the new law.
