It appears Dr. Jebb has a major-league conflict of interest.

But the MRC rejected any suggestion that Dr Jebb's integrity had been compromised. Carolan Davidge, the council's spokesman, said: "She is an independent expert and I can't stress that enough. "She could be commissioned by anybody to produce independent research. If the Atkins Diet people asked her to do some research she would do it independently.
"The idea that anybody would think that she would compromise her standing as a scientist and her independence for £10,000 is just ridiculous."
Yeah, right. But OK, let's give her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe she is sincere. Maybe the flour companies just went out and found a doctor who sincerely believes in exactly what they want to hear and hired her to do the study.
In any case she offered not one bit of evidence to back up her opinion.

Per chance, is Dr. Jebb a Democrat? (Sell their souls.)

Dr. Atkins - that was no accident.

The Atkins diet is a very effective way to lose weight quickly. But it has a huge problem: it's NOT balanced.
And most important: it's not a great way to live the rest of your life.

Last week she caused consternation among devotees of the Atkins Diet when she said that there was not a "shred of evidence" to suggest that it worked.Hmmmm... "Not a shred of evidence..." Right... I've lost 51 pounds and 9" around the waist so far, and am fast approaching the half-way point of my diet... 62 1/2 is exactly the half way poing. More importantly, within a week, I was feeling better. My joints felt better and I was sleeping much better. It seems that my body "likes" the fact that I'm eating far fewer carbs and processed, synthetic foods. No, I can't give any specific evidence, although when I tried going on a high carb "healthy" diet, mostly brown rice and veggies (rice... BLECHHH!!!!), I actually gained weight. So based on my own annecdotal experience, I think that Atkins works, and this so called researcher is just showing that Dr Jebb knows who butters the bread.

Funny, the scientific study the SHE quoted found that Atkins dieters lost TWICE as much as much weight as the other diet.
That in itself sounds like a "shred of evidence" to anyone who is not blinded by bias.

The Atkins diet appears to be quite a puzzlement to modern scientists. They can get it to work in practice, but not in theory.

I can't respond to each one individually. But I can say one thing: you have proved that freepers too are as vulnerable as anyone to groupthink, crowd psychology, mass hysteria and delusional madness.
Surely, Atkins was a fine man. I saw him on Larry King and liked him. A calm, moderate man, with an important message. But to elevate this nice man to the level of a prophet makes you no different than islamic fundamentalists.
If you think this is the ONLY way to be thin and healthy, you do need some serious help.
I'll have a feast tonight with my Greek friends, with lots of red wine and will drink to your health.
Cheers!

Thanks for this PF. I tried to find a link like this when the thread was first posted, just know it existed out there! I failed, but missed your post. Someone on a current thread that repeats Jebb's assertions just linked to this thread! Sweet find (figuratively, of course).
