The road to gay marriage
Jewish World Review ^ | 8/8/03 | Marianne M. Jennings

Episcopalians now trot through their annual ritual of hand-wringing over gay priests. Canada now recognizes same-sex marriages. Not to be outdone by our fair-weather friends to the North, the White House Press Corps' hammered Mr. Bush on our Puritanical aversion. The president of the United States, in a Twilight Zone moment for me, had to clarify that marriage is for a man and a woman. The Vatican echoed the Bush doctrine on marriage.

Pat Robertson has called for prayers for a new Supreme Court following the court's ruling that the Texas sodomy statute was unconstitutional. The basis for that decision must be in the Constitution near the Commerce Clause. I hated that topic in law school and missed a few classes. Thus, I am not fully versed in the Founders' Sodomy Clause.

Television has everything from dimwitted Will and Grace to Queer as Folk, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, and Boy Meets Boy. For the first time in 70 years, Brides has a full page article on same-sex weddings, including a guide on being a good guest at a gay wedding. New York City has established the Harvey Milk High school for transgender students.

From July 1, 2003 through August 3, 2003, the New York Times ran 182 articles with some reference to "gays." USA Today had 316 articles on gay issues in the past year, over one per day for the M-F newspaper.

I feel like Joan Cusack in the movie, In and Out. Jilted at the altar by her newly self-realized homosexual groom Joan attempts, still in wedding gown, to drown her sorrows in a bar. The first man she approaches for consortium is also homosexual. Ms. Cusack screams in desperation, "Is everybody gay?"

Media bombardment has lulled the masses. Homosexuality is oh, so avant garde! Only dweebs and nerds spout nature and religion. The straights now battle each other over gay marriage rights with who's-more-hip attitude. How did it come to this? Homosexuals moved public policy with well-chosen tactics.

Infiltration of policy-maker ranks. College education level for gays and lesbians is double that of the general population, with one-half holding at least one degree. As a result, they hold influential positions in business, government and non-profits. They write, call and demonstrate in unison. Too-silent straights are struggling and juggling children, work and soccer games.

Infiltration of corporations. Human resource executives are social workers who found social work salaries disgraceful. So, they and their liberal leanings entered corporate life where they developed diversity, multiculturalism, and tolerance. Those lofty goals got benefits for partners, regardless of gender, gay employee clubs, and discipline for straight employees who asked why.

Alignment with minority groups. Pull up www. stonewall.com to trace the history of gay rights in the UK. Blacks were included in their harassment studies. The alignment with racial groups afforded an alliance and, armed with the ability to yell "Bigot!" immunity from attack .

The gay gene myth. I've had over 500 letters assuring me homosexuality is genetic. Dr. Dean Hamer, the gay male who released the first homosexuality and genetics study, has stated unequivocally, i.e., "Absolutely not," when asked if homosexuality is in the genes. He cites the identical twin studies that show homosexual causation is "not inherited."

Use of AIDS. Using inflated numbers, the gay community has floated stories that AIDS was affecting the elderly, that AIDS was at epidemic proportions, and that "AIDS affects everyone." All myths. Only about 750,000 people in the U.S. have AIDS. The leading cause? Homosexual contact. The UK's 19,000 of 20,000 AIDS cases were from sexual transmission.

Demonizing opponents. Anita Bryant, Dr. Laura and Michael Savage lost television gigs because of their views that homosexuality is immoral. Sen. Rick Santorum (R. Pa.) dangles in the wind since discussing the Texas sodomy case. Recently, GLAAD asked its supporters to inundate the Los Angeles Times with protests and boycotts because it published an op-ed piece by Rev. Pat Robertson on his prayer call.

Economic pressure. United Way loses funding if it gives to the Scouts. BSA loses funding, including United Way's, if it won't allow gay troop leaders. Corporations fear donating to BSA.

Suppressing free speech. Gays go for the jugular, attacking the livelihoods of those who oppose them. Any means are justified for their desired ends. Canadian teacher Chris Kempling was suspended for one month for his Christian views on homosexuality, expressed in a letter to the editor. The Canadian CLU fears this one and won't help.

Infiltration of schools. With the backing of the American Psychology Association, the NEA has taken over training on homosexuality. APA guidelines prohibit use of the term "ex-gay." The NEA/APA pamphlet, "Just the Facts About Sexual Orientation" is appalling in just its overview, "factuality cannot be considered apart from a philosophy by which the facts are interpreted." For a look at the factual flaws of the NEA/APA, see www.narth.com. . . .

Was talking specifically about gay marriage there, so your example is moot. Besides maybe if Bonzo's daddy had done something about it maybe your premiums wouldn't be so high. Instead it was blamed on "poppers and cat hair" and allowed to florish uncontrolled until it reached the straight community as well. (Though, I'm certainly not denying that sexual behavior is a cause of the spread of HIV and that many gays are extremely stupid about who they sleep with.)

Excellent article:

College education level for gays and lesbians is double that of the general population, with one-half holding at least one degree. As a result, they hold influential positions in business, government and non-profits. They write, call and demonstrate in unison. Too-silent straights are struggling and juggling children, work and soccer games.

I found the above paragraph to be pivotal even though there were a number of other very concise comments and observations. These already fairly neurotic folks are transferring/projecting their own "issues" onto the rest of us. Not much different from your typical liberal just a bit more emotive. The feminization of this country continues unabated.

Actually, I'd take it a bit further.

The trademark in those greetings isn't the tense of "enjoy", it's "we hope you enjoy(ed) your stay". That implies that the person is about to leave, meaning ZOT.

Just a "welcome to FR" is good, or you can post the "welcome, enjoy your stay" and put a "no zot" warning on there for all us confused people. ^_^

Using words like "hath"? Please. That's not even correct anymore. And the dramatic ending where she magically predicts the future. Wow. If I were her I would submit this to the school newspaper ASAP!

Time for an E. D. Hirsch cultural literacy moment: Jennings is reprising/paraphrasing the famous message sent by Samuel F. B. Morse in his first test of the telegraph: "What hath God wrought?" (a Bible quote from Numbers 23:23). If you looked up the expression on Google, I'd bet you find zillions of contemporary citations.

And Jennings' prediction of the future seems anything but mystical or magical to me, given her solid expositions of recent history and statistics.

Speaking of all those citations (gay gene myth, suppression of free speech, et al.), I'd say that's the place to start the refutation, not in quibbles over language.

That argument (increased healthcare costs due to AIDS) is even more applicable to smokers and fast-food eaters. Are you for criminalizing the latter behaviors?

You're right, I suppose. I just thought the "What hath (blank) wrought?" thing was a bit cliched and over-used. As far as refuting every one of her claims, I don't see what would be the point. My reaction to most of them is, "So what? That's politics." I don't support everything any gay group does. I agree that some of them want to stifle free speech on the grounds that it is "hate". I abhor people who do that. However, to blame the "gay agenda" for the cancellation of Dr. Laura's TV show is being a bit naive. The show was terrible, and this is coming from someone who is actually a FAN of her radio show. She should have stuck to what she does best, lambasting people and giving them life-changing (sometimes for the worse) advice after listening to them for less than 30 seconds. On radio, she's an icon. On TV she was shrill, her topics were unoriginal, her "audience members" obviously planted and their questions scripted. In short, it was dreadfully tedious and had none of the "edge" her radio show had. It was like being in a dentist's office for four hours listening to a drill. At first, the sound is painful, but after a while it lulls you to sleep.

I did understand that, and I didn't take any offense. I was just commenting how atypical Troll behavior it would be for a DU subversive to post a Marianne Jennings column as his/her first post. Well, maybe if it were a really dense DU operative, . . .

I'll respectfully disagree only in degree. I think there's a sizable number of activists who are attempting to suppress dissent/disagreement in every corner of the public square: education, religion, government, media, you name it.

And although there was a concerted effort from the gay community to scuttle Dr. Laura, I'd have to agree with you that her TV show was ultimately doomed to extinction because she couldn't replicate her radio show's pizzazz.

homosexuals will just simply now play around the word marriage. They will now want the "same thing" without the mere word marriage. This will then be used to stigmatize marriage as "just for kooks".

Sorry but their fetish for recreational sex does not rise to the level of tax breaks or special rights.

Any ONE example is irrelevant, marriage is an insititution and not subject to the whims of a few mentally ill people.

To quote a famous Stooge, "I resemble that remark." No, really, I don't resent your suspicions. I just don't have the luxury (work, you understand) of being on FreeRepublic for great lengths of time.

In future posts, maybe I'll be able to establish my conservative credentials to the satisfaction of my fellow (and I trust that "fellow" isn't too sexist an expression here) FReepers.

I'm not for criminalizing any of the behaviors (including homosexuality or any other deviant sexual behavior).

At the same time, I oppose redefining marriage to include same-sex or inter-species marriages. You are free to hump you kitten or pig if you like, but I don't think we should recognize your marriage to it.

Interesting point...although anyone who would get divorced just for financial bennies probably shouldn't be married in the first place. :-)

I think a biggie is being able to cover your spouse with health care -- that's being addressed by many companies with "domestic partner" benefits. Ultimately, I don't think it's a bad thing to allow two people to take legal responsibility for one another -- it should lessen medicaid burden, welfare, etc. since a two-person unit is more stable than two one-person units.

But I agree with many of the posters here that it shouldn't be considered "hate speech" for people to speak of biblical beliefs.

I wholeheartedly agree with your approach of separating the legalisms around marriage from the personal commitment aspect. Heck, my own marriage is based on a lot more than just a piece of government paper...
