Anglican church leader to summon bishops

LONDON (AP) — The archbishop of Canterbury said Friday he would summon leaders of the world's Anglican churches to consider the impact of the confirmation of a gay bishop in the United States.

Archbishop Rowan Williams said the meeting was planned for London in October, and invitations would be sent this week.

"I am clear that the anxieties caused by recent developments have reached the point where we will need to sit down and discuss their consequences," Williams said.

The U.S. church this week confirmed the election of the Rev. V. Gene Robinson, a gay clergyman, as bishop of New Hampshire.

The move provoked outrage in parts of the Anglican communion, particularly in the doctrinally conservative African churches.

"I hope that in our deliberations we will find that there are ways forward in this situation which can preserve our respect for one another and for the bonds that unite us," Williams said in a statement issued by his office.

"I hope we can use the time between now and then to reflect, to pray, to consult and to take counsel," the archbishop added

Reading between the lines of Williams' statement, I don't find "defrock the gay bishop" anywhere. I did find "put some ice on it", though.

I'm baptist too and am praying for our Episcopalian brothers and sisters in Christ. There are a lot Christians who have a dog in this fight, Episcopal or not.

Possibly a good thing to come out of this is that many are reassessing their church's stand on Gays with an eye to pre-emptive action. I have and have found my church to be in good shape. I suspect that others will come to a different conclusion concerning their own denomination.

Get thee to a Missouri Synod Church. I'm Catholic, but I admire the Missouri Synod Lutherans. And MS is no lttle sect: they have a vast network of parochial schools. Although smaller than the ELCA, the Missouir Synod is (in my opinion) healthier: it's chruches are growing and they are not divided over issues like gay ministers and abortion. Missouri SYnod will never marry gay and will never sanction abortion.

Miss Marple has pointed out that there is an economic bottom line involved here too. As I understand it, she has pointed out that the Episcopals own a LOT of prime real estate, art, endowments, and so forth. The ones who want to leave because of principles will have to leave behind the treasure that their families for generations have been investing into the churches.

Earthly treasure has little to do with heavenly reward. They are only heaping condemnation upun themselves. But then obviously, heavenly reward isn't their concern.

The point is not whether the dissenting Episcopals will leave (and I believe a lot will, abandoning their beautiful churches and stained glass windows). What I was pointing out was the motivation for the takeover of the Episcopal Church by the gays; they could start their own churches, couldn't they?

But by taking over the existing churches, they get prime real estate, art, endowments, and bank accounts. They are greedy thieves, as well as being gay. I do not think they should be allowed to pretend they are "spiritual" and "suffering martyrs." They are thieves, pure and simple, and I intend that they be painted as such.

Of course, you are correct. I probably did not do well in making my statement when I chose that particular word.

My point is that it is a sad thing for people to have to leave a long term home into which not only they, but their families for generations have invested. Of COURSE those who adhere to storing up their treasure in heaven will do what they need to do, earthly treasure loss or no.

Oh, I understand your point. I was just pointing out that it is all relative..."lay not up treasure for yourself on earth" amd all that. To be honest, I had not really given much thought to the financial aspect of the whole thing before you mentioned it. I believe another poster did as well. Obviously the church has considered whether or not it could maintain financial stability knowing that a lot of money will be leaving the church, but the real battle was a spiritual one, and Satan won this round. I don't know how we address the possessions of the church or even if we can, short of driving the queers out, which obviously isn't going to happen. While there will still, for awhile anyway, be individual parishes that adhere to the scriptures, eventually the trickle down headship of the church will infect the entire church, much like AIDS infects the entire body. Perhaps the world body will cut the American church off from the Anglican Communion as an act of chastisement, and it would be a well-deserved humiliation. We have obviously lost all sense of right priorities and have failed to discipline ourselves or to heed the warnings of more devoted men of God.
