Charles makes mystery visit to Orthodox church priest

Jul 31 2003

Exclusive by Eryl Crump, Gareth Hughes, Gareth Bicknell and Steve Bagnall, Daily Post

PRINCE Charles made a private visit to a Greek Orthodox priest in North Wales yesterday.

After a busy day with four stop-offs in North Wales, he spent about an hour chatting to Father Deiniol at the Church of Holy Protector in Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Neither would comment on what was said during their meeting.

A spokesman for Prince Charles said the visit was private and declined to comment further.

Father Deiniol, whose church has existed in the terraced house on Manod Road for more than 20 years, also said their discussions were private. The Prince is not believed to have visited the house before.

His Royal Sikorski S76 helicopter, which whisked him between engagements yesterday, landed in a farmer's field around three miles from the slate town, and the Prince travelled to the church by car with his bodyguards.

Father Deiniol told the Daily Post: "The Prince of Wales has many links with the Orthodox Church and sometimes visits such a church if there is one in the area."

He added he had met Prince Charles on several occasions.

Neighbours were unaware of Prince Charles' visit. Children from the Penygwndwn council estate played football outside the house as the heir to the throne chatted.

Just a few police No Waiting signs gave an indication something unusual was going on.

Sharon Jones, who works at Father Deiniol's charity shop, said: "I saw the signs and I thought there was a funeral.

"Father Deiniol gave us no inkling that he was expecting Prince Charles to call by."

Marian Thomas said: "By visiting today he has put Blaenau on the map. It's good to see him visit ordinary people and places."

With the Episcopal church going to Hell (literally) is Charles contemplating a return to the Orthodox faith of his ancestors?

THE FALL OF ORTHODOX ENGLAND

... But this is Greek Orthodoxy ... Greek Orthodox priest

Greek Orthodoxy split with Rome in the year 1054, that was even before the battle of Hastings (1066).

I think there's lots of British law on this - don't think its possible to retain the crown, even if he is so inclined.

Charles' dad is Prince Phillip....there is no King of England right now. (yes, I believe Phillip is from a royal family in Greece...)

There has been a lot of speculation on whether Charles will be King at all. It may skip over him and his son will be King. If Charles goes Orthodox, it may be a sign he isn't going to be king.

Sure, but you said ancestors. That implied in my mind, more than one generation back. I don't know if Prince Philip was brought up Greek Orthodox or not.

Charles' father is Prince Phillip of Macedonia. He is not King. I think the title is "Prince Consort", if they kept Victorian tradition.

I report, you decide:

Born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark at the Greek Royal residence of Mon Repos on the island of Corfu on June 10 1921, Philip was instantly fêted by his family as a future hope of one of the world’s most celebrated Royal dynasties. His father, Prince Andrew, was the grandson of King Christian IX of Denmark, while his mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, was the eldest child of Prince Louis of Battenberg, and sister to Earl Mountbatten of Burma.

Yea, but when you say ancestors to me, I'm going to really look for ancestors. I totally overlooked Charles' Dad - that doesn't qualify as an ancestor - I reckon you'd need to go back at least a couple of generations before using the term ancestors

It is my understanding that Prince Philip was raised in the Greek Orthodox Church. When his mother was widowed she became a Greek Orthodox nun.

The Greek Orthodox Church still doesn't recognize the supremacy of Papacy - that was the little sticking point that led to the split in 1054.

I did not know that. Since Queen Liz is head of the Anglican Church, (Fidei Defensor - "Defender of the Faith") I'd imagine he'd have to keep quiet about his beliefs. -- if he still practices them.

They were married in the Angelican tradition.
