Arnold Schwarzenegger will announce decision on "Tonight Show", network says
Associated Press | August 1, 2003

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger plans to end days of suspense and announce next Wednesday on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" whether he will attempt to replace Gov. Gray Davis as governor of California in the Oct. 7 recall election, NBC officials and Schwarzenegger aides said Thursday night.

A statement released Thursday by the network said Schwarzenegger will make a special appearance on the late-night show on Wednesday. He most recently appeared on "The Tonight Show" on June 26 to promote his latest "Terminator" movie.

Schwarzenegger campaign consultant Sean Walsh confirmed that was the case.

"He will have an announcement this coming Wednesday," Walsh told The Associated Press.

A Schwarzenegger adviser who spoke on condition of anonymity said the actor still has not decided whether to run for governor. The adviser added, though, that Schwarzenegger is leaning against making a run.

"He has not made a final decision, but nothing has changed about his leaning against," the adviser said.

On Special Report with Fox News, they discussed the Arnold issue, and said that Arnold would likely encourage his "good friend" Dick Riordan to run, if he chooses not to run.

The report added that Riordan has been discussing with DEMOCRATS possibly affilating with their party

Riordan boosters: put THAT in your pipe and smoke it!

Oh, well I will certainly be waiting with baited breath. ROFLMAO Maybe he'll bring his dog "Dickie" along with him for support. And then they can go down to the Pantry together afterwards. Now for those interested in a real conservative candidate with a solution for the budget mess who is sharp as a tack, clean as a whistle and absolutely no baggage go to http://www.tommcclintock.com

In or Out? Schwarzenegger Following a Familiar Script

By Claudia Eller, James Rainey and Michael Cieply

Times Staff Writers

July 26, 2003

During his long reign as Hollywood's favorite action hero, Arnold Schwarzenegger was famous for what industry insiders called "The Arnold Sweepstakes."

The movie muscle man reveled in putting Hollywood on hold — making A-list producers, directors and writers wait until the last moment before deciding to go ahead with a project.

Suddenly, California politicians are getting a taste of that Hollywood waiting game. A string of potential candidates in the state's Oct. 7 recall election are keeping crucial decisions on hold while Schwarzenegger — perhaps relishing the sort of attention he enjoyed in his prime — contemplates whether or not to make a run for governor.

The decision could come any time, but some of Schwarzenegger's key political advisors, most of whom spoke on condition that they not be identified, are telling him to wait until as close as possible to the filing deadline — 5 p.m. Aug. 9 — before revealing his decision...

I live in L.A. County and had an interesting call tonight from a pollster. The person on the other end did not know who hired her and wasn't supposed to know, but from the questions, though every candidate was mentioned, it seemed to me to have been paid for by Riordan.

It did mention whether one would be more likely to vote for a party affiliate or an independent, and tried to match various candidates both Dem and Pub against each other as well as trying out whether any candidates appearing on the ballot would affect one's choice on the recall.

I think Riordan is going for it, and I think Ahhnold is creating a "pretty entrance" by causing high interest in his announcement, and coming on strong for Riordan in it.

If he's that indecisive, how effective could he be as governor? He'd always be asking everyone for advice, and, based on his support for Riordan, he would probably surround himself with idiots.

Re Riordan possibly aligning himself with Democrats. I wouldn't care if he got chummy with Castro, anyone who can beat Davis will be a vast improvement.

The fact he's doing it on "The Tonight Show" makes me hope he says no.

He's not going to do the GOP any good. Keeping Riordin out is the only positive.

But I don't live in California so I don't care. And my liberal, left wing younger brother (the youngest being a retired Air Force Mst Sgt and a solid conservative) lives near Sacramento so I relish the thought of his property and income taxes going up. He's always so smug about those "needed" government program so let him pay more for them.

So, you'd vote for a Democrat to replace a Democrat? What's the point in that? You'd get the same thing, with a different face.

I live in Los Angeles and was pleasantly surprised by what he did for the city during his two terms, as originally I wanted another candidate to win the election. I voted for Riordan happily for a second term, and would vote for him once more despite the labeling that goes on here, i.e. "RINO" ad nauseum...

During his first year as L.A. mayor he visited the company I work for and gave a fine speech, patiently answered dozens of questions about our city and his plans for it from employees, and made a great impression. He's a "get it done" kind of businessman and wasn't afraid to tangle with the powerful City Council members.

During his terms I had the opportunity to cross paths with Riordan a few more times, and each time I was favorably impressed. Every Republican I know here in L.A. supported him for Governor the last go-round.

McClintock of Thousand Oaks, who seems to be a favorite here, is a fine candidate, no doubt about it, but the die-hard Dems who dominate in California won't vote for him, nor will many Independents, and Davis will stay in office. Same is true for Simon and all the rest of the conservatives.

If Arnold doesn't run, Riordan is our best chance at replacing Davis now.
