Southerners Know How to React

Watch out who you call a nasty name - he might be a Southerner, and y'all will be in a heap o' trouble.

Southerners, it seems, are brimming over with cortisone and testosterone, and they tend to be quick on the trigger. That's according to eggheads at the University of Michigan, where shrinks wandered down corridors bumping into students and calling them names.

Students from the South reacted far more violently and aggressively than those from the North, and "in tests regularly suggested more belligerent solutions to problems," writes Britain's Spectator magazine.

At the root of it all is the nearly vanished concept of honor, which appears to be thriving south of the Mason-Dixon line.

The Michigan experiments demonstrated that Southerners "retain two vital aspects of the old honour system: a high degree of sensitivity to insults and a tendency to respond with violence and aggression," according to Spectator.

That sounds reasonable - except how does it explain Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Edwards and Jimmy Carter?

Now now, Web, please put my quotes in the context in which I used them. Although I don't have time to go back and reread each and every one of them (I have no doubt they are accurate, just out of context), I do remember one of them was in response to a statement from a southern gent who suggested that normal, decent people shouldn't be out on the streets at mid-night looking for dinner. I didn't fire first. I just responded. We were jawing.

No, it's just considered woman stuff and they have no interest for the most part. In the south we still have women stuff and men stuff. Women may cross over into the men stuff occationally if she doesn't ruin the fun for the men and is willing to drink beer with everyone else but men tend to stay away from the women stuff. Shopping is without a doubt one of the women things that most men want no part of. Of course, I'm talking in very general terms and there are probably some exceptions. But this is true for the good ol' country boys (which I am partial to.) My hubby is sort of a halfbreed southerner. He comes from FL and I have trouble grouping FL in with the rest of the southern states because I have a hard time finding sweet tea, biscuits, and corn bread without sugar in it down there.

Now, now, Lab, take another look. I don't think they were that far out of context. (BTW, midnight can be a great time for dinner. Ever been to the South of France? Nobody starts eating until well after 9:00 and dinner is served until the wee hours of the morning.)

How about a little southern humor to go along with this thread:

A couple from New York City are driving to Florida and they stop at a small Southern town to get some gas and take a break.

They go inside the store to pay for their gasoline and get some snacks. The lady behind the counter notices that they are not from around there and pleasantly asks, "Where y'all from?"

The wife rolls her eyes and says, "Well, I can tell you that where we're from, we don't end our sentences with a preposition."

Oh and if you like the Theatre, The Fox in Atlanta is awesome. I saw My Fair Lady there and have been to a Tori Amos concert there and even my upper balconey seats were wonderful.

First off, I’m not attempting to speak for the Freeper to whom this question was posed. This is just my opinion based on personal experience.

I believe that the average southern man would appreciate artistic works by the likes of Frederick Remington & Owen Gromme.

But, some forms of art and high culture so adored by chic east coast types, such as dung spattered on a painting of Mary, The Vagina Monologues, or a crucifix immersed in a jar of urine don’t play well down here.

Much (not all) of what passes for art and culture in your neck of the woods is considered by many to be nothing more than the products of sick perverted minds.

Our collective masculinity isn’t threatened by the New York Philharmonic, nor is it threatened by the works of Robert Mappletrorpe.

The U of M is a hotbed of liberal swine who are trying to cast dipersions about Southern men. Any normal man with a sense of self worth would take offense at being rudely bumped into then called an epithet on top of that. If one of them clowns were to bump into me and call me a name, I would definitely go to General Quarters on his ass. Its called teaching them manners. If they are psychology students, then they should realize that there are certain rude behaviours that will provoke a response. The whole experiment sounds to me like the instructor should've had his ass kicked for even allowing them to do it. College ... Higher Education? What a CROCK!

What I love about the south are the "southernisms". I grew up in Virginia and traveled all over the south.....I adored the colorful sayings and wish I could remember them all.

Here are a few I do recall:

"That's about as useful as a wicker bed pan”

"I need that like Custer needed more Indians.”

"That person's got more nerve than an abcessed tooth!"

"Who's screwing this pig? You or me?"

"I'm as full as a fat ladies sock" !

"That's as useful as a screen door on a submarine!"

"That is as hard as trying to nail Jello to a tree."!!

"I am going to have to sit on my hands to keep from clapping"

I should have married a southern lady. I remember when my ex-wife announced that she wanted to take up fly-fishing, which is one of my passions. I said, "Great, who you going to go with?"

I love Church and Moorse and other artists of the Hudson River School, as well as most of the "Old Masters." I also like Dali. Piccasso, and Matese. Do I have a chance as a southern gentleman?

I have not been to any place in France, although I have been to South America and to many of the Carribean Islands, and the only people who eat dinner at 5:00 p.m. are the American tourists. Great joke, BTW.

I would suggest that if you have to work 12 to 15 hours a day or more than you are doing it wrong. You need to become a little more efficient.

I had know idea. < /sarcasm > If it makes you feel better, compared to NYC, the closest city to my house in the far burbs is a fourth class city. Fortunately, NYC is a relatively short commute, and that keeps me sane, except in the winter, because I can't stand the cold and snow.

That joke is one of my all-time favorites.

I know France is out of favor these days but if you get the chance, you should go. Especially in the South, around Nice and St. Tropez, you would find lots of great restaurants, awesome French wines to try, the Marc Chagall museum, lots of stuff to see and to do, plus you are right on the ocean. It?s a great place, just make sure you can speak at least a little bit of French and the people are not at all unpleasant.

Well, as the South simply intended to peacefully leave the Union, and the Union would not have it, choosing to invade and kill thousands, I feel your terminology is innacurate.
I think the reason this damnyankee study is flawed is because in the South if you bump someone you say 'excuse me' instead of 'watch where you're going, a$$hole', as is a typical reply up north. In spite of being a nonviolent person, northern callousness and rudeness makes me want to provide a suitable attitude adjustment, along with a lesson in manners.
