Hello FReepers,
Hopefully one of you can help me out... I've been doing some research on the Constitution (yes, believe it or not, there actually IS one that some of us on the Right like to at least try to adhere to)... Anyway, I'm interested in knowing why certain parts of the Constitution are crossed out/italicized and I'd appreciate a link to any online version of the Const. that displays such crossouts/italics.
Thanks for your help in advance... Semper Fi, -sdk

Those parts have been repealed and or modified via amendment.

Or just no longer are in effect, e.g. the initial apportionment of representatives.

You may want to get a copy of an annotated U.S. Constitution. It'll tell you the reasons clauses were modified.

Some parts of the Constitution have been changed or are no longer in effect. (remember, back then, things like slavery, etc existed) Through ammendmends and the Bill of Rights, parts were changed, altered, or just made ineffective. Words in ittalics or words crossed out are no longer in use but are kept for historical value.
I know because we did a LONG study on the Constitution last year. Pretty interesting though...*ramble*

Maybe a draft that wasn't adopted has such markings, but the official document certainly doesn't.

My son has to recite a randomly-selected passage, or amendment, verbatim and with punctuation, and explaining it in modern english, each saturday - or no allowance.

Same answer as to the creator of this thread. Portions of the Constitution (and its amendments) that have been superceded by legitimate amendment are shown as strike-outs. Protions that have been added the same way are shown in italitcs. And, BTW, legitimate amendments mean those that have been promogated and ratified as stated in Article V. "Amendments" by force of Supreme Court decisions are not included in the text of the Constitution.
This has been a standard typesetting way to reflect such changes since ten of the twelve items of the Bill of Rights were ratified in 1791. Nothing new or exceptional here.

Currently the following parts of the Constitution are not applicable any longer:
[Beginning with]"We The People ......
[Ending with] .... In witness whereof We have hereunto subscribed our Names,
All other parts are in full force and effect.

*gasps* Oh you cruel person!! My heart goes out to your kid!!
Seriously, that will help him learn the Constitution--but don't be surprised if in 20 or so years (depending on how old he is) he's lying on a couch in a shrink's office, saying, "It all started 20 years ago with my mom/dad..." ;)
