Some parts of the Constitution have been changed or are no longer in effect. (remember, back then, things like slavery, etc existed) Through ammendmends and the Bill of Rights, parts were changed, altered, or just made ineffective. Words in ittalics or words crossed out are no longer in use but are kept for historical value.

I know because we did a LONG study on the Constitution last year. Pretty interesting though...*ramble*

My son has to recite a randomly-selected passage, or amendment, verbatim and with punctuation, and explaining it in modern english, each saturday - or no allowance.
