Black Conservatives
Black Republican Coalition of Minnesota ^ | 03-03-03 | L. Rosenbloom

Posted on 07/04/2003 5:49:28 PM PDT by Mn. Black Republican Coalition

January 02, 2003: Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King, and Douglas. ALL BLACK CONSERVATIVES Was Malcolm X a political conservative? Martin Luther King, Jr.? How about Frederick Douglass? They were all "conservatives" based on a contemporary definition of political conservatism being misapplied to some "African-Americans." "Many so called 'black conservatives' receive the label simply because they believe in self-help," said Sherri Smith, assistant professor of communication arts at UAH. "They don't say the system or the government should take care of everyone. Thus, Malcolm X, Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Jr., and others are erroneously labeled black conservatives."

Smith has spent two years studying "black conservatives" to determine their characteristics and how they are perceived in the black community.

Black conservatives are characterized by several key traits, she said, including criticism of "liberal" African-American leaders, opposition to affirmative action, and opposition to blacks thinking of themselves as victims of a social system.

As part of her research, Smith studied work published by four African-Americans who are considered to be conservative by U.S. political scholars: economist Thomas Sowell; Shelby Steele, professor of literature at San Jose State University; Anne Wortham, sociologist at Boston University; and Glenn Loury, economist at Boston University.

Despite common stereotypes, Smith says the majority of African-Americans are social conservatives

"Most of us rely strongly on our religious faith, our immediate families, and many support the death penalty and oppose abortion," said Smith. But African-Americans do favor a strong federal government.

"The problem many African-Americans have with these 'conservatives,'" she said, "is that they appear to air the problems of the black community to the entire nation without offering any real solutions."

The: Lucky Rosenbloom comment Ms. Smith's research confirms with alacrity of thought, what I have said at the start of the Minnesota Black Republican Coalition three years ago today. I am willing to debate with any liberal, Black, or White, regarding this research. I am willing to debate with any liberal, anytime, about the Republican vs. the Democrats in terms of people of color and/or women and which party has the best to offer. The problem is that most liberal are afraid to debate with me. I walk boldly in areas of the Democrat control in the urban areas. Heck. I have attempted to debate with liberal in those liberal newspapers and they are afraid to respond to my challenges in their own newspapers.

Come on liberals. Let us debate this research. I know you liberals are reading my web site because people like, soon to be out of the House, Rep. G. Gray is begging people in the urban areas not to leave the DFL and join the Black Republican Coalition. Oh, its true. Read all about it in the Minneapolis Spokesman Recorder. Black conservatives are stepping out strong. Did you know a relative of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr,. recently joined the GOP.

MLK at least spoke explicitly against the race policy that the Left now holds.

Debating is not a liberal strength, filibustering is.

Liberals are too afraid of black republicans to even attempt a debate! Liberals and white republicans debating....no problem.

It boils down to a fear they have, that they may say something that is not politically correct. Liberals are not very comfortable in there skin....look at Al Gore. This man was incapable of answering a question that hadn't already been through the PC mill and back.

There has been a strange new phenomenon occuring recently from the liberal crowd....make that the white liberal crowd. They have attacked black republicans with rude and some say racist remarks. Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice have been two of the targets and in my opinion, I think Colin and Condoleezza have been too nice about it all.

Debating is not a liberal strength, filibustering is.

Demonizing and shouting down anyone they disagree with is their strength.

Once you get Louis Farrakhan away from the race-baiting rhetoric, he actually has many intelligent things to say about the Black community. He doesn't want them dependant on white slave owners (aka the government). He wants blacks to be self-sufficient. He wants black to take responsibility for each other and repudiate those who commit crimes and live off the sweat of others.

If that was the extent of his message, I'd be quite supportive. It's the other 2/3rds of Mr. Farrakhan's pronouncements that make me ill. I guess you'd have to lump him in with these other so-called "conservative" black voices.

"The problem many African-Americans have with these 'conservatives,'" she said, "is that they appear to air the problems of the black community to the entire nation without offering any real solutions."

They offer the solution to anyone who cares to listen. Stop depending on the government. Stop depending on the lying liberal leaders. Depend on yourselves and your families to get ahead, not on some government mandated extra credit just for being black.

Black athletes got where they are at by hard work and never giving up. They got where they are at by working harder than the competition. If there were affirmative action programs in sports, the black players would still be dependent on the extra points that were being given out instead of just doing it. Winners don't depend on someone else to level the playing field for them.
