>Just curious, but how are you harmed when someone else smokes some weed with a hooker in the privacy of their own home?

Chop a line now...
Cocaine decisions...
You are a person with a snow-job
You got a fancy gotta go job
Where the cocaine decisions that you make today
Will Mean that millions somewhere else
Will do it your way

Cocaine decisions...
You are a person who is high class
You are a person not in my class
And the cocaine decisions that you make today
Will mean nothing later on
When you get nose decay

I don't wanna know
'Bout the things that you pull
Outta your nose
Or where they goes
But if you are wasted
From the stuff you're stickin' in it
I get madder every day
'Cause what you do 'n' what you say
Affects my life in such a way
I learn to hate it every minute!

Cocaine decisions...
You are a doctor or a lawyer
You got an office with a foyer
And the cocaine decisions that you make today
Will not be discovered till it's over 'n' done
By the customers you hold at bay

Cocaine decisions...
You are a movie business guy
You got accountants who supply
The necessary figures
To determine when you fly
To Acapulco
Where all your friends go

Cocaine decisions...
We must watch the stuff you make
You have let us eat the cake
While your accountants tell you Yes Yes Yes
You make EXPENSIVE UGLINESS
(How do you do it? -- Let me guess...)
Cocaine decisions...
Cocaine decisions...
Cocaine decisions...

Are you going to do the Xena yodel, a few backflips and then kick me in the chest? Toss your magic ring around? Have your little blonde sidekick blindside me? It's easy to round up the Libertarians and put them where they all belong!
Didn't I meet you at a Ron Paul BBQ? Is he your ringleader? Have you been cooking recipes from his family cookbook?

Wait, let me correct a small typo:

How come the "Renaissance Festival" involves people with broadswords clubbing each other, chain mail, jousting and the like, whereas the real Renaissance involved enlightenment, education, reason, trade, etc? Wouldn't it be better called a Medieval Fair?

Depends on the fair, actually. The Austin-area fair is called Excalibur Fantasy Faire, and it's Arthurian-era.

The Texas Renaissance Festival (for which I work) purports to be early 16th-century, usually 1516-19, and we do a bang-up job at it, but we do have our anachronisms like Robin Hood.

while also realizing that efforts to crack down excessively on these matters raise additional problems

Spot on.

Marijuana, cocaine and heroin were just as illegal in the '60s-'70s as they are today. At that time, we didn't have no-knock raids, asset forfeiture, shootdowns of Cessnas carrying missionaries, etc. Yet we survived!

I would not have a problem in returning to that status quo.

I'm a swing voter. I'm socially conservative because I know in the end we will $pay$ therefore making it impossible to be fiscally conservative.

Yep that's right. I'm a moralist. On many of the other threads I've been discussing some $prices$ our society has already payed.

slavery = $Civil War$

industrial slave labor = $socialist worker's unions$

pornography = $hetero/sexual disorders (including homo)$

hetero divorces = $I've lost count$

hetero/sexual disorders (including homo) = $disproportionite amount of AIDS/STD Research$

alcoholics = $right up there with hetero divorces$

and my current favorite !!!Drumroll please!!!
abortion = $priceless & gee it could get ugly$

We could go on and on and on but oh yes SOONER OR LATER we do $pay$ for all that private "mind your own business" adult stuff.

Maybe we should stop paying. Seriously.

One of the problems I see is that we've disconnected consequences from people's actions. We give welfare to people who have lost their jobs because of drug problems etc. We pay their health care bills. Whatever happened to "if you don't work, you starve? And if you lose your job because of drug use too damn bad? Clean up your act or die".

I actually don't think it's a good idea to legalize drugs in the welfare state we currently have, because if we don't stop paying for the results of people's bad decisions it *will* be too expensive. But why are we paying in the first place? Free people need to be free to make their own decisions and TO FACE AND ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES OF THOSE DECISIONS, even if they are not good.

I understand most of your points except for the abortion one (from a purely tax $$ perspective). I don't see how legalized abortion is costing us more - I would think it would cost us less because of fewer kids born to mothers not able to take care of them. I'm talking purely money here, not any other aspect of what I consider a disgusting practice, and I'm not advocating it, just trying to understand your point.

I would love to. BUT Truthfully your being very idealistic because the dysfunctional left to their own means will not pause and have a moral clarity moment before they eat your young. I personally don't want to wait till they do something to my children before they get a tap on the wrist.

Your forgetting about all the women who end up with some type of psychological/post-natal mental problems after they get an abortion.

Abortion also contributes to a "don't care" sexual attitude. Most women who have one abortion go on to have more. They also have no reason for using protection and are one of the hetero/sexually disordered we $pay$ for when they start to rot from STDs.

I'll except your point of letting the immoral pay a consequence for their actions. Unfortunately they scream about how "uncompassionate" we were towards AIDS "victims" in the 80's etc...

They hold protests. They demand we pay attention to their dysfunctions, but only long enough to hand over the $money$. We are still supposed to keep our moral opinions to ourselves. They are half the voting electorate (Democrat).

All I'm saying is if you want MY $money$ your going to get my RULES. That means we get to all scream and regulate their messed up lives.

We get to say your ill and that's not intolerant.

If we put everyone in jail because their behavior had negative social consequences. Let's see liberals, public school administrators, some judges, .............

Well, on second thought I love your criterion.

I realize I'm being idealistic. In a way, I think everyone who is politically concerned/involved is - we all have a sort of mental image of "utopia" in our heads that we're trying to get to, and our votes reflect that. Even the Democrats have theirs, though it looks a lot different than ours ::lol::.

Rights and responsibilities *must* go together, I think we all agree on that. But what I see these days is that rights are being chipped away at at the same time that responsibilities are being taken over by the state. I want to reverse that, even if it has to be in small steps.

Somehow, we have to retrain our population that they aren't "victims" and that actions have consequences. I don't know how we do this - this is the kind of thing we were all supposed to learn as kids but many alive today didn't seem to, or got trained out of it. Making moves to NOT bail out people who get into trouble because of their own stupidity would be a good start.

Personally, I don't share your feelings on gays. Monogamous gays that mind their own business, go to work, mow their lawns etc are ok by me (I know several of these types of couples - they are as close to being the gay version of the Cleavers as you can get). The Act Up flamers I have a problem with as they are making their issues *my* issues and I'm never cool with that no matter what the issue is.

I also think that you're overestimating the pure $$$ cost (not emotional, spiritual, or anything else) of abortion, though I do agree that it may promote a more cavalier attitude towards sex and birth control. But I do think the tide is turning on that, which is good.

It would be better if it could return to pre-New Deal when we had to turn to a private/religious group for help and were therefore personally accountable to someone who had a name & face. I'm truly hoping that Faith-Based initiatives is the beginning of that. When it's shown that their is a better "return" for your tax dollar maybe we could slowly weed out the bad charity groups. Eventually this may lead to:

Cutting social taxes down then more money would go to private charities that get the job done. I still say that we as a society, "not the guberment", need to be able to say when a person is ill.

I get my attitude about homosexuality (and equally hetero/disorder) from the fact that I have never ever ever known a monogamous homosexual couple in my life. I've known many. By the way every single one of them came from a dysfunctional (mild to extreme) family to begin with. Very few of us don't.

Many of those friends (yes I love them unconditionally) have children (biological) and yes they do love them but the children still suffer. I've seen it for my self which is why the propogandists can't fool me.

Oh and lots of times couples have outside "partners". That's why I say I've never known a monogamous one.

I will say this though I have a hard time watching children grow up in these messes and then not having compassion for them when they turn out messed up. I've baby sat other people's children and what I've seen has left me up all night worried sick (literally throwing up from a stomach in knots). I've even baby sat for FREE.

I have a tendency to take it out on anonymous people on forums *^_^*. I'll join you for a few minutes though in hoping that we have good change of mind in this country.

Not possible.
