Maybe we should stop paying. Seriously.
One of the problems I see is that we've disconnected consequences from people's actions. We give welfare to people who have lost their jobs because of drug problems etc. We pay their health care bills. Whatever happened to "if you don't work, you starve? And if you lose your job because of drug use too damn bad? Clean up your act or die".
I actually don't think it's a good idea to legalize drugs in the welfare state we currently have, because if we don't stop paying for the results of people's bad decisions it *will* be too expensive. But why are we paying in the first place? Free people need to be free to make their own decisions and TO FACE AND ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES OF THOSE DECISIONS, even if they are not good.
I understand most of your points except for the abortion one (from a purely tax $$ perspective). I don't see how legalized abortion is costing us more - I would think it would cost us less because of fewer kids born to mothers not able to take care of them. I'm talking purely money here, not any other aspect of what I consider a disgusting practice, and I'm not advocating it, just trying to understand your point.
