Who is going to succeed GW?

Posted on 05/29/2003 11:32:51 PM PDT by ampat

Right now, there isn't a Republican presidential candidate ready to run in 2008. We don't need anymore "its my turn" Bob Doles. O'Reilly thinks hillary is a shoe in because the Republicans don't have anyone who can beat her. Cheney needs a rest, John McCain was once a contender but he has been wishy washy lately. Anyone have any nominees?

as if anyone is for any war rather than for Freedom...

Powell is pro-Freedom...

I wasn't for either war either, but I am also for Freedom...

I just know she [Hillary] would lose

I don't think we can make that assumption. The Dems--and certainly the Clintons--do not play by anyone's rule book but their own. They will steal votes or kill anyone who gets in their way; whatever it takes to win. And they have the liberal media behind them. If she would ran an honest campaign, I would agree with you. But I think she's inherently incapable of doing that. I also think she probably has the wherewhithal to win by stealing the election.

fascinating thread....I have got to jump in and add my 3 cents worth...

First..all those who talk about Guiliani, Pataki, Powell et al...on the ticket..forget that the GOP will NOT nominate anyone who is not strongly pro-life. That is the one immutable.tenet of the vast majority of the GOP..so, they're out..

Second...I adore Condi, she's brilliant..and can see the scenario whereby she replaces Cheney after the 06 elections..this gives her a leg up....but I have to ask...a never married black female?..look what the Dems are doing to Foley in Florida..if there are any unanswered questions in Condi's past..they'd better come out now....

As a conservative..I'd be against the idead of Jeb..even though he's been a good governor....it just smacks too much of "primogeniture" if you will...and I think the country, including much of the GOP, would feel wrong about it....<P. Re Hillary....if she does decide to run in 2008.....look for her NOT to seek re-election in 2006....after all...the Dems will be deep in the minority in the senate...no fun for her...so she'll avoid the obvious question about would she serve out her term....she retire to devote herself full-time to a "listening tour" around the country.....and to co-opt and potential primary challengers....

OH give it a rest. How much of the country knew about President George W. Bush in 1994?

He's does a marvelous job....and as a plus..is a very effective speaker, and photogenic as well....Collins in Colorado also.....either could be plucked by W. as a replacement for Cheney if he retires after the '06 election...

John McCain was once a contender but he has been wishy washy lately.

Give it a rest. He 'outed' himself as a 'stealth' liberal a long time ago (attacking the prolife movement and POSITION, and Christians, and those who actually worry about the CONSTITUTION, or DEFENSE), and damn near got recalled in his own state. The phoniest of all flag-wrapped patriots. Trust NOTHING out of his mouth.

FYI, I had heard rumours that Jeb was the original family pick to be groomed for politics.

I guess you must be new to this political scene. Jeb was the one targeted early to run for President in 2000. However, he needed to get the governor's chair in Florida as the first stepping stone. Unfortunately he lost the election in '94 to Walkin' Lawton Chiles, and had to wait until '98 to get elected to that post. It was obvious he couldn't run for Pres in 2000, because just stepping into the role of Governor required him to devote his efforts to ruling the state. If he had used that short period of time to campain for Pres, he would not have gotten elected. As everyone recalls, Florida was the pivot for GW's election in 2000, and although he won fair and square, it was only by a hair. Jeb had an apparent tough campaign to get re-elected as governor in 2002, but in reality, the results were different. He won by a clear majority, only two years after the Presidential election fiasco there. He has proven himself in Florida, although he has his detractors.

Regardless of his political views...McvCain has health issues..the recurring skin cancer....that would preclude a serious run for any national office...

Powell is PRO-ABORTION. And pro-even-bigger-government than Bush. And Pro-AFFIRMATIVE Action (naturally). And by all accounts, privately in favor of the treaties which Bush has been bypassing. (Kyoto, TestBan, ICC etc.) Might as well put Gore in as Powell. He was put in the SecState position for reasons of 'Balance' and to appease the left-wing sots in Foggy Bottom. If elevated to the White House, Balance would go out the window.

Why should he earn it why shouldn't it be just like his brother where the Republican backroomers came out and said IT WILL BE W. He got all the Republican money and everybody else was shoved to the back room. The Captive, you have got to vote your fears crowd, i.e. VOTE FOR THE LESSER OF TWO EVILS CROWD, will of course go along even though Government will get even larger and not a single program or dept. cut back or eliminated. In fact the Republicans have become the democratic party of twenty years ago and will continue down the doomed path of more and more socialism. I would love it if anyone could show one thing W has done to shrink the size of government. You can't, he is all about maintaining power, not taking the country in the right direction, which is no different than the demorats.

My out of left field pick for 2008 is Ben Nighthorse Campbell. It's about time a hog was parked at 1600 Pennsyvania Ave. However, since he's probably too old...

Too old?...lol!

But then, if the opponent was another Clinton, I guess that issue would cancel itself out.

Great point. The other thing to keep in mind is that Jeb lost a close Gov's race to Lawton Chiles in 94. Had he won, Jeb would have been the Republican candidate in 00 not Dubya.

Living in a state that borders Texas and competes with Fla, I have to say the job these brothers have done in their respective states is most impressive. History will look upon them as two of the finest governors of the last 50 years.

I'd like to get George P. to run for Governor of Louisiana.

here ya go..a slightly "off - topic" trivia question for ya....

Q. Aside from all being Republican, what do the 5 most powerful elected officials in the government...the Pres, the VP, the Speaker, the House Majority Leader, and the Senate Majority Leader, have in common?

A. NONE of them are lawyers...

Condoleeza Rice does not hold a CANDLE to Alan Keyes. She in large measure shares a good chunk of 'negligence' blame for 9-11. She aided and abetted misinforming GWB as to the purported non-hazards of his unilateral nuclear disarmament decisions and policy. Meanwhile our 'friends' the Russians deploy a new mobile MX-grade missile every three weeks. Where is she on the real and growing threat of a nuclear Pearl Harbor? AWOL.

Nobody has mentioned the name of Bill Frist or Tom Delay.. Either of those two is a possibility. Maybe we could draft Shaun Hannity or someone like him. What you think???

Alan Keyes, who in 2008, or more likely 2012 will pull a Ronald Reagan, win the nomination and the Presidency, and the TRUE RIGHT will recapture the party. Restoring the party to constitutional policy.

Late reply.

Am much as I adore Dr. Rice, I have some issues about her being pro-choice. I would like to get some clarification on her stance for this.

Give me a break. He is already waffling on his no new taxes pledge. He waffled on the Profiles of Learning, letting RAT-Fink Steve Kelly run him around by the nose with a non-alternative alternative. And he is caving on the budget, openly discussing the OPTIONS of tax increases. Even with the clear evidence the Minnesota budget is STILL GROWING, and that the political consequences--for a Republican anyways---, ala GHWB, are terminal.
