Teachers earn more than editors & reporters

The Summer 2003 edition of the education journal "Education Next" has statistics on teacher pay from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that match my own research. To quote: "Teachers earn more per hour than architects, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, statisticians, biological and life scientists, registered nurses, university-level foreign-language teachers, and editors and reporters." The statistics exclude benefits, which are far richer for teachers than for private-sector employees.

On a related note, the web site of a private citizen has great graphs and stats on government spending. One graph shows how education productivity has declined by 70 percent over the last 40 years, based on the ratio of SAT scores to inflation-adjusted per-pupil spending. The graph can be found at:

Things seem to be getting worse, not better. No Child Left Behind is a legal nightmare.

I support getting rid of the legal mess that burdens teachers and does not allow problem children to be removed from the classroom. I support no mandatory attendance, after middle school anyway. If they don't want to learn by then, they never will. But...we should try for awhile to get the people that don't want to to want to learn. I also support school choice.

I am planning on going into the education field.

I am gung-ho in supporting home-schooling. In fact, my HS newspaper did a features spread on alternatives to the public schools and I wrote a rather glowing article highlighting just how successful homeschooled students are and how much more material can be covered and yet give the kids more free time than they would in a public school.

But I don't know if folks like you should be allowed to school your kids at home....

Here in KS it is pretty evenly split from my experience. There are liberals and there are conservatives, but most keep the politics out of things and don't do politics in the classroom.

Start a group where you have a homeschooling group meet as a "private school" and then your argument would have some merit.

Actually, around half the test-takers in I believe MA failed the teaching exam.

Actually, a "school" was started here in KS that found a loophole that allowed parents to collect the amount of money they would have been alotted per pupil in teh public schools. Of course, they got in some legal trouble.

I think they should be allowed to spend whatever would be spent for their kids in the public schools though frankly.

I think if safeguards were in place to ensure kids were actually learning, that would help guard against freeloaders.

BTW, I passed that exam in the 98% range ... have you? I also have taken the GMAT, ACT and SAT and college exit exam all with similiar results. IQ test? NO problem .. very high and of course two college degrees. 15 years job experience in school , mental health clinics as suport staff, and then running my own business. I am a volunteer in the school district here and have been for four years. I have even been asked to run for school board many times by the current board president, "even though I am a Republician" because she feels I am so dedicated to education.

I have lived in five states and been active in civics in each place. I actually raise my own kids and homeschool them to test 96%. And guess where all of the neighborhood kids play. That is right... my backyard. Why ..becuause they enjoy it here and they like me. I treat them with respect and know they are safe here. My Mother, Grandmother and Aunt are governement school teachers. I have six neighbors who are governement school teachers, and five fiends from college. I have worked with over 20 teachers in my life time. And grew up with kids whose parents were all teachers.

Where is it exactly that you think I am short in the noggin? And your experience? What makes you an expert on governement education? Your knowledge of teacher's union and how many teachers you know.

Besides if you were a real consverative you would not say I am "allowed" to hs my own kids. Clue # 1 to a RINO: feels parents are allowed to raise children, not expected to.

When you get out of high school you will learn a valuable lesson, you don't 1/2 of what you think you know. First thing is you need to re-read my posts, I don't hate teachers, I hate unions and lazy teachers.

Secondly you are a bit young to be telling taxpaying citizens and parents about the ways of the world. I can respect any young person with a passion, I had mine as well, however you need to check yourself when you pick fights with the grown ups.

If you really have a passion for teaching, then choose a place to work that is not so politicaly motivated as governement schools. If you want to make money, go into business, you can not have it both ways.

Lesson #2, unions and the NEA control the governement schools, not the teachers. You will find many a good teacher hiding out there because it is easier to hide than fight. Some inocently think they are going to change the system. They won't. Hoemschoolers and conservatives will though , over time. There will always be a demand for good teachers, becuse not everyone can teach and it is not practical for everyone to homeschool. We should have fair market prices for the salaries of teachers, so good teachers get paid great salaries for making huge contributions, not a monopoly, which is what we have now. It won't last though. There is a rennisance of education happening right now. YOu can either choose to be a part of it, or get under it and let it run you over.

Until then don't call yourself a conservative, and don't attack people who can blow you out of the water on this topic.

Just because you are in high school does make you an expert on education . And just because you are a kid, does not make you an expert on raising children.

You will remember these words because it is good advice, you have a lot of growing up to do and much to think about. I hope you will make the right choices in life and that you will make great contributions to our society. A goo d teacher will do that, a lazy teacher will just suck up tax payers time and money. Yeah, but there's the rub. The local school board, the same school board that wants to adopt the gay-lesbian task force agenda as a sex education program, teach rain forest math, and make students read "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" would be the people that were determining what the "safeguards" are. Homeschoolers have fought battles for years to keep the local educrats from showing up on our doorsteps to demand guided tours of our houses, and to keep from being required to use the same little green athiest communist curriculum as the local schools.

I am not willing to give up the autonomy of home schooling as we, as parents, see fit, for thirty pieces of silver. The educrats don't care about whether children are educated. They only care about whether they "think" the right things.

My friend, I wouldn't dream of ruining a a year of thousands of children's education to go on strike, That would be why I put "if we wanted to" on the end of my sentence. I have no idea what "bif communism/socialism" means, but that's fine, because communism and socialsm don't fit my philosophy of life.

It is amazing what comes out of the mouths of people who claim to support homeschooling. I see we have much work to do still on changng the perception of civil rights for homeschoolers ,and fighting the brain washing that is going on in governement schools. I am not disheartened though. I know time will tell. I am in for the long haul, and it may get pretty nasty over the next ten years. We just have to remember that every baby step counts. I am glad to see you are taking those same steps.

I just may break into my favorite civil rights jag about keep your eyes one prize and we shall overcome , blah, blah blah. Keep up the good work, eventually the message has to hit home with some of these people.

How much do you have to spend on classroom supplies since the department budget can't fill it all?
I am fortunate enough to teach middle school for-high-school-credit foreign language. Up until this year, the budget has been mostly sufficient for my non-consumables (posters, banners, flags, etc.) which I can use every year. I'm able to make many of my consumables (markers, colored pencils, etc.) last two years. This coming year, my purchases will come out of my pocket. A poster set of 6 thin, shiny pieces of paper is $30 + shipping, and I need at least 3 sets because, as the only foreign language teacher on campus, I'm now teaching all of the foreign language on my campus, thanks to down-sizing. I'm guessing I'll be trying my hand at home made posters-- too bad I'm no artist.

you know homeschoolers would have to pay the same $30.00 and business people would just do without it if it wasn't in their office budget. Other people may ask an art student to make them the posters, and a capaitalist would devise an entire barter system whereby each teacher who could make something would, in exchange for goods and/ or services.

I get the same catalogs you do, and there are a ton of things I would love to buy. Of course I pride myself in getting the free deals and being creative.

Just think of how many things you could buy if the unions and administrators weren't sucking up all of the resources and and demading you pay them dues so they can support the Democrats.
