Probably One of the Most Vicious Anti-Bush Letters You'll Ever Read
Lewiston Sun-Journal ^ | May 12, 2003 | Paul Macri

Posted on 05/12/2003 1:43:25 PM PDT by bogeybob

Hail to the great hyprocrite

Paul F. Macri, Auburn, Maine

President Bush is a great American, a great American hypocrite, that is.

My stomach turned last Thursday night as Bush’s jet landed on the USS Abraham Lincoln and America saw him in a flight suit for the first time since he went AWOL from the Texas National Guard more than 30 years ago.

Don’t those cheering sailors — who truly are brave and did serve their country — know that Dubya conveniently sat out the Vietnam War, not as a protester or Rhodes Scholar, but with a rich boy’s “in” to the National Guard? And he couldn’t even hack that for the length of his sign-up, so he went AWOL his last year to run a Republican campaign in Alabama.

He was never punished, as a regular soldier would have been, and even got an “honorable” discharge.

Karl Rove knows that you can’t lose by underestimating the intelligence of the American voter, so I’m sure we’ll be seeing these pictures soon in campaign ads.

Bush was “unelected” in 2000. Shame on him.

If he’s “unelected” again in 2004, shame on us for having an economic, political and class double standard.

All is forgiven if you went to Yale and then pretended that you were in the military — if your father is a rich Republican and former president of the United States.

Beware being a smart boy from Tennessee who went to Vietnam or a Rhodes Scholar (a true intellectual achievement) from Arkansas. Oh, and also a Democrat.

If this is "a smart boy from Tennessee", I'd hate to see a dumb one.

Alot more documentation than most urban legends, but you decide:

Despite the obvious bias, seems like a good case to me.

"Honestly, you have a point--since when has the National Guard been filled by cowards?"

Since Senator Dan Quayle was selected to run as Vice President in the first Bush Administration.

I'm tired of this also.

...Maine Somali's (ranger Killers)

Be fair. This particular bunch of Somalis were more likely to be killed by the 'Ranger Killers' than the Rangers were.

Algore spent only six months in 'Nam with his bodyguards, but, hey, he's a war hero.

Not to mention the fact that GW's ANG unit could have been activated and he could have ended up dead or perhaps every bit the hero that McCain and "Cash-In" Kerry claim to be.....

All lies:

Bush volunteered for the Texas ANG (as a single-seat air defense F-102 pilot during a period when fully 1/4 of all ejection seats were actually being used: over the lifetime of a jet fighter, i/4 of them crashed or were shot down!). Flying was/still is extrememly dangerous duty.

When he volunteered, the unit was active in Vietnam, but transferred to home defense while he was in training: he made no effort to find a position 9unlike Gore's "newspaper behind-the-lines duty made as a result of his dad's pull!) Bush didn't "avoid" duty. (His style of fighter (a rocker equipped supersonic interceptor) was used for home defense, not for ground bombing in Vietnam: and there only a few enemy fighters in North Vietnam. tha's why he didn't deploy.)

Bush flew MORE active days overall than he was required by the regulations, and was praised for his flight time and duty: Gore was excused EARLY from Vietnam, and ended up with only 30 more DAYS of active duty as a newspaper "writer" than Bush did as a pilot! (No stories written by Gore have ever been found: it's not clear what he actually did.)

The demo's ONLY complaint about Bush was ONE "duty weekend" period that he asked for (and received permission to substitute!) drill time in Alabama rather than Texas so he could work during the week on a Senate campaign in Alabama. The demo's "claim" that Bush was AWOL stems ONLY from information that this AL USAF (regular) CO didn't remember Bush being on base during that time; but Bush didn't report to the USAF commanding officer; as a junior reservist, he would NEVER have been in contact with a base CO!

In fact, his girlfriend at the time remembers Bush specifically talking about training on base, so there are "witnesses" that show he WAS training.

After returning to TX after the election, he made more flight time in Houston (reasonable - AL wouldn't probably let a TX reservist take an expensive fighter jet up fo rgrins and giggles!) and finished the year with all his required flight hours.

This "attorney general" had better get his facts better organized in his cases than he did reading his demo faxed lie sheet....

---...---...

By the way, that "smart TN boy" this democrat lawyer is praising flunked out of not only law school in TN, but also out of "divinity school" !

Plans to host a Culture Celebration Day are being discussed, and tentative dates for after spring recess will be forthcoming. A forum for panel discussion with parents is being planned for an evening, and the re-institution of a newsletter to Lewiston High School families is forthcoming as well. Recently, Mr. Boucles and I met with Somali elders to have a dialogue dealing with recent media coverage and reporting. We are working proactively and positively in understanding each other's issues relative to a sound learning environment for all. A student task force has been established to solicit student input. The Civil Rights team, comprised of students and advised by Mrs. Joan Macri, has created role-playing scenarios that deal with culture change and discussions that center around them. Faculty forums for discussion and planning have been conducted by administration with positive results. Resources from Bates College, the University of Southern Maine, and the Attorney General's Office have been tapped and suggested personnel for consult work have been identified. The process of climate change can be challenging and intriguing as one might imagine. A well-informed student body and faculty can create a smooth transition. We at Lewiston High School are fortunate to have the dedication and support of both groups to make this happen and only time will assist us in preparing for this paradigm shift. I am confident we are utilizing the right approach.

SECTION F.IMPACT OF SOMALI MIGRATION ON LEWISTON SCHOOLSYSTEM

Prepared by: Leon Levesque Superintendent of Schools Lewiston School Department The recent resettling of Somalis in the community of Lewiston has impacted the local school system.

Gee, they hate Bush, live in Lewiston, and love Democrat/welfare/freedom ignorant neo-slaves. More here.

Read my summary of Bush's flying; before you repeat your lies again.

There is NOTHING to hide there, you are simply repeating jealous democrat lies that come from previous democrat fax sheets.

And a democrat fax sheet isn't a "facts sheet."

Guarding the Truth
A big Welcome! to those who came here from Instapundit, One Hand Clapping, Sgt. Stryker, the Daily Pundit and sundry other points of the blogosphere. After you read the post below, please also scroll up or go here to read a follow-up. And please don't miss these just-posted letters from two readers.

Blogger South Knox Bubba is fond of belittling President George W. Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard, even repeating the charge that Bush was often "AWOL" during his stint in the Guard. It's a favorite accusation of the anti-Bushies, one given new life a few years ago by this story in the Boston Globe, which alleges a one-year gap in Bush's service record.

But later reporting proved Bush wasn't AWOL. National Guard magazine said it best in its Jan. 2001 edition:

Bush also was accused of skirting the draft by joining the Texas Air Guard in 1968. He became an F-102 fighter pilot before being discharged as a first lieutenant in 1973. [Former National Guard Bureau historian retired Col. Michael] Doubler says it is unfair to criticize those who joined the Guard during the Vietnam War. "The government allowed it and in many ways encouraged it," he said "There were a lot of things the government did to authorize people to serve in places other than the front lines."

Bush's drill performance also stirred controversy during the campaign. Some reports charged that he was absent for a year. However, probably the most comprehensive media review of Bush's military records concluded that while he, "served irregularly after the spring of 1972 and got an expedited discharge, he did accumulate the days of service required for him for his ultimate honorable discharge." The review was done by Georgemag.com, the online version of the magazine founded by the late John F. Kennedy Jr.

Guardsmen say Bush's service record is not unusual. "In any six-year time frame you probably can find some problems," says retired Rep. G.V. 'Sonny' Montgomery, D-Miss., founder of the House Guard and Reserve Caucus. "Just learning to fly the F-102 and not getting hurt and not hurting anybody is an accomplishment." Montgomery called Bush's election, "nothing but a plus for the Guard."

The New York Times also looked into the charge and found it lacked substance:

Two Democratic senators today called on Gov. George W. Bush to release his full military record to resolve doubts raised by a newspaper about whether he reported for required drills when he was in the Air National Guard in 1972 and 1973. But a review of records by The New York Times indicated that some of those concerns may be unfounded. The Times examined the record in response to a previous Boston Globe story.

Documents reviewed by The Times showed that Mr. Bush served in at least 9 of the 17 months in question... On Sept. 5, 1972, Mr. Bush asked his Texas Air National Guard superiors for assignment to the 187th Tactical Recon Group in Montgomery "for the months of September, October and November." Capt. Kenneth K. Lott, chief of the personnel branch of the 187th Tactical Recon Group, told the Texas commanders that training in September had already occurred but that more training was scheduled for Oct. 7 and 8 and Nov. 4 and 5. But Mr. Bartlett said Mr. Bush did not serve on those dates because he was involved in the Senate campaign, but he made up those dates later.

Colonel Turnipseed, who retired as a general, said in an interview that regulations allowed Guard members to miss duty as long as it was made up within the same quarter. Mr. Bartlett pointed to a document in Mr. Bush's military records that showed credit for four days of duty ending Nov. 29 and for eight days ending Dec. 14, 1972, and, after he moved back to Houston, on dates in January, April and May. The May dates correlated with orders sent to Mr. Bush at his Houston apartment on April 23, 1973, in which Sgt. Billy B. Lamar told Mr. Bush to report for active duty on May 1-3 and May 8-10. Another document showed that Mr. Bush served at various times from May 29, 1973, through July 30, 1973, a period of time questioned by The Globe.

Here's a link to the abstract of the NYT story. The text I provided came courtesy of AndrewSullivan.com

Even the Boston Globe's story admits Bush served more than the minimum time, and was a fine pilot:

Those who trained and flew with Bush, until he gave up flying in April 1972, said he was among the best pilots in the 111th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron. In the 22-month period between the end of his flight training and his move to Alabama, Bush logged numerous hours of duty, well above the minimum requirements for so-called ''weekend warriors.''

Indeed, in the first four years of his six-year commitment, Bush spent the equivalent of 21 months on active duty, including 18 months in flight school. His Democratic opponent, Vice President Al Gore, who enlisted in the Army for two years and spent five months in Vietnam, logged only about a month more active service, since he won an early release from service.

Incidentally, Bush flew with the 111th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, which was attached to the 147th Fighter Wing, based in Houston, Texas. While Bush's unit never got called to Vietnam, the 147th was. From 1968 through 1970, pilots from the 147th participated in operation "Palace Alert" and served in Southeast Asia during the height of the Vietnam War. The 147th came off runway alert on Jan. 1, 1970 to start a new mission of training all F-102 pilots in the United States for the Air National Guard.

Bush enlisted as an Airman Basic in the 147th Fighter-Interceptor Group at Ellington Air Force Base, Houston, on May 28, 1968 - at a time when the 147th was actively participating in combat in Vietnam. However, one can not train overnight to be a pilot. Bush completed basic flight training and then, from December 1969 through June 27, 1970, he was training full-time at Ellington to be an F-102 pilot.

Bush volunteered to serve in a unit at the very moment it was seeing combat in Vietnam, and only a restructuring of the unit's mission before he completed his flight training made it unlikely he would fly in combat. And he was never AWOL - he completed his required service and even served beyond the minimum.

SKB owes the president an apology.

We can surmise that he still is working full bore for visit to the Lincoln Bedroom - either with Hillary or another Democrat in the White House. He appears to be quite active in Maine's Democrat Party with and/or through a woman who is listed as sharing a phone and his name with him (we might assume Joan is his wife then).

There's nothing wrong with an active Democrat writing a letter to their local paper. However, when it hits the ether/airwaves, it's nice to know what their biases might be. It also sheds light on the strategies that Democrats will be using in 2004...

Arrggh!!! Everytime I hear this "draft dodger in the National Guard" I want to scream. This is such an insult to every guardsman. How do all those National Guard aviators that just defended the country in Iraq feel about being called draft dodgers and non-participants. Oh, it is SO offensive I could....Arrrrgh!

A few days after Sept 11, 2001, there was "Letter to the Editor" posted here from somewhere in Maine.

Said letter claimed the attacks of Sept 11 were because Pres. Bush had backed out of the Kyoto Accords, the ABM treaty, etc.

Said post "got the zot".

I've got a vague recollection that this Paul Macri who wrote this one is the same guy who wrote the other.

Sound familiar to anyone else?

Regarding letters to the editor, most legitimate newspapers go out of their way to identify people who post letters -- especially if they are overtly political, as was true in this case. The Sun-Journal is obviously a short step above a high school paper.

AOWL is military crime. A lawyer, a member of the bar, falsely labels someone as having committed and having been charged with a crime. Is this punishable
