U.S. troops to be pulled out of Germany
Rumsfeld indicates U.S. troops to be pulled out of Germany
U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has been visting Iraq this Wednesday. Following a stop in the southern city of Basra, Rumsfeld moved onto the capital, Baghdad. He met with the U.S. appointed administrator for Iraq, Jay Garner.
Later, he spoke to U.S. soldiers at Baghdad's airport. Asked about rumours that Washington was planning to pull troops out of Germany, Rumsfeld indicated that the rumours were true, but that the details had not yet been worked out.
Those comments came one day after Rumsfeld announced that U.S. troops were pulling out of Saudi Arabia.

If any, how many of our men and women are serving in Kosovo under the UN? I hope we bring them home also.

There are going to be a lot of disappointed "German-bound" U.S. soldiers who have spent nearly their entire careers in Germany. I know of Warrant Officers and senior NCOs who married Germany women, raised their children in German schools, and are hardly distinguishable from German citizens when they are not in uniform. Not that I approve of what they have done, but it will be interesting to see the outcry!

Italy has been a staunch supporter. Ditto Spain, Romania, Hungary. I hear Budapest is lovely this time of year. (Why should we reward the Germans with our tax dollars in the form of base rental, civilian jobs, personnel housing costs, even payments to farmers for driving a tank down their dirt roads? Let's send that money to our friends, not our enemies.)

I don't believe so. There was or is a German flight training operation at Holloman AFB in New Mexico. I do not know if it is still in operation, but it was on a USAF base. While we do train military from other countries, there are no foreign military bases in the US, as far as I am aware.

I don't believe ANY country has a military base in the USA.

We should get our troops out of any area which does not appreciate and support them and the United States government.
If the Germans and Frogs want to go their own way, fine - we are better off rid of them. If Russia ever becomes a threat to them again ( most unlikely) they can take care of themselves.
As for the Saudis, they hate us, let them protect their own sites and worry about controlling the nutcase Wahhabists they have been cultivating for the past few centuries.
Now, I'd REALLY like to get the U.S. out of the U.N. and the U.N. out of the U.S.
After the barrage of insults the Security Council dealt us, the last straw was appointing butcher regimes like Cuba to the Human Rights Council. What a bunch of dumb clowns!!

Italy makes more sense as a base of Air Ops for the simple reason that it adjoins the Mediteranean, while Germany is landlocked. No overfly rights need to be secured before heading out to international airspace and hanging a left towards the Middle East.
In addition, supply efforts would be easier in Italy due to the same sea access.

As we leave Germany, we should remind them that we're not bailing France out again.
