DEMOCRAT OBSTRUCTION

Estrada And Owen Blocked By Shameless Partisan Minority

_______________________________________________________________________

“Owen, Like Estrada, Apparently Will Need 60 Votes For Confirmation Instead Of A Simple Majority. It’s A Shame And It’s Wrong - Essentially Turning Over The Senate’s Power Of Confirmation To Any Minority That Can Scrape Together 40 Votes. Can’t Find It In Our Copy Of The Constitution.” (Editorial, “The Filibuster Docket,” The Daily Oklahoman, 4/11/03)

The Filibusters Against Estrada And Owen Are “A Shameful Exhibition Of Partisan Politics.” (Editorial, “Not Enough Hours,” Las Vegas Review-Journal, 4/15/03)

“The Arguments Against Mr. Estrada’s Confirmation Range From The Unpersuasive To The Offensive. . . . It’s Long Past Time To Stop These Games And Vote.” (Editorial, “Just Vote,” The Washington Post, 2/18/03)

Democrats block Every effort to End Estrada Debate

Democrats Voted Against All Four Motions To Invoke Cloture On Miguel Estrada’s Nomination To D.C. Court Of Appeals. (CQ Vote #40, Rejected 55-44: R 51-0; D 4-43; I 0-1, 3/6/03; CQ Vote #53, Rejected 55-42: R 51-0; D 4-41; I 0-1, 3/13/03; CQ Vote #56, Rejected 55-45: R 51-0; D 4-44; I 0-1, 3/18/03; CQ Vote #114, Motion Rejected 55-44: R 51-0; D 4-43; I 0-1, 4/2/03)

If floor vote were permitted, Estrada would be confirmed

At Least 53 Senators Would Vote To Approve Estrada. Florida Senator Bill “Nelson became the fourth Senate Democrat to say he would not support a filibuster to prevent a vote. The other three are John Breaux of Louisiana, Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Zell Miller of Georgia. Breaux and Ben Nelson also plan to vote for Estrada’s confirmation.” (Frank Davies, “Nelson To Vote For Bush Nominee,” The Miami Herald, 2/26/03)

Now, Democrats are filibustering Priscilla Owen

Democrats Plan To Give Owen The Estrada Treatment. “Democrats . . . say they have more than enough votes to keep Owen bottlenecked in the Senate the way they’ve kept Hispanic lawyer Miguel Estrada from becoming a federal appellate judge for the last three months.” (Jesse J. Holland, “White House Rebukes Senate Democrats On Planned Filibuster Of Another Bush Judicial Nominee,” The Associated Press, 4/30/03)

Democrats’ Rejection Of ABA “Well Qualified” Owen For 5th Circuit Judge Was Unprecedented. Last autumn, Owen became the first nominee given a unanimous “well qualified” rating from the American Bar Association (ABA) to be rejected by the Senate Judiciary Committee. She was rejected on a straight party-line vote. (Editorial, “Not Enough Hours,” Las Vegas Review-Journal, 4/15/03; Committee On The Judiciary, U.S. Senate, Hearing, 3/13/03)

* According to the ABA, its “well qualified” rating means that a nominee is “at the top of the legal profession” and has “outstanding legal ability, breadth of experience,” and “the highest reputation for integrity.”This ABA rating has been called the “gold standard” by Democrats on the Judiciary Committee. (Editorial, “Past Time,” Richmond Times Dispatch, 9/18/02)

* Miguel Estrada was also rated unanimously “well qualified.” (Jonathan Ringel, “ABA Approves More Bush Nominees,” Legal Times, 7/16/01)

I'm tired of the democratic hypocrisy and the republican's impotent response. Frist should force the dems to use a REAL filibuster if they are going to filibuster these nominees. And, Bush should fill EVERY vacancy with recess appointments of these same nominees that will remain in effect until the nominees are given an up-or-down confirmation vote in the Senate.

Have you heard when Pickering may be brought up? That will give us three being denied an up/down vote, imo. We may get one or two more before this is over with.

We need to blitz the senate to get some backbone and make the Rat's put their obstruction on display. No more "filibuster lite" - make 'em shut the Senate down! I've already sent my email (the left-wing Truemajority.com has a nifty service for sending stuff to the Pres, Senate & House - I replace their screed of the moment with my message (he-he-he!)

New York Democratic Senator Charles Schumer will announce this morning that he will filibuster the nomination of Judge Pickering to a place on the US Fifth Court of Appeals.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/818971/posts

But Louise Bogard, legal director for the Alliance for Justice — one of the groups that opposed the nominations of Charles Pickering and Estrada — said the fight over Estrada has strengthened the Democrats' resolve to block the promotions of Charles Pickering and other conservative judges. Charles Pickering has been nominated for a seat on an appeals court that hears cases from Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.

I pray to God that this tactic by the Demcrats will be the death of them. I used to hope that the Democrats would reform themselves and develop new leadership -- leadership with some intergity. Now I hope the Democrat Party goes the way of the Whigs.

Could Frist not call up the vote on Estrada and Owen tomorrow and force the Democrats to defend the filibuster over the weekend, at the same time that Graham, Kerry, & Lieberman are supposed to be debating in SC?

Frist needs to start playing hardball.

Frist grabs his tail and says yes to the rats! Frist is the rats best friend and they were LOL when he was elected leader. The democrats won in December because of Bush and spineless republicans that sided with the liberal rats at the time they all came together with liberals and slammed Trent.

The lynching of Estrada and the rape of Owen is going to cost them so much more than they'll ever know. IMHO

Schmuck Schumer in a speech on the floor already said Judge Pickering will be filibustered. The Demonrats excuse for all of these blocks is that they are defending the constitution and americans from activist right wing judiciary. How looney will this get before its over? Why won't the GOP fight?

Am with you -- IMHO the only way to handle this is a full blown filibuster -- no business conducted and make the RATs talk, talk, talk and show the Country what they are all about. Time to knock off this Mickey Mouse filibuster lite and go for broke!
