Beloved Heavenly Father,

We have been called to a National Day of Prayer, so we gratefully come before you together to petition for your grace and mercy on our nation.

We have just witnessed our beloved President, George "Dubya" land on the USS Abraham Lincoln. We have seen the mutual joy, respect, and love shared between the President and these outstanding young men and women who have been serving this nation so well. Father, we ask that you will preserve the safety and spirit of these young people, and that by your grace, they may ALWAYS have a Commander In Chief worthy of the title.

Father, we forget not those who are yet in harm's way. We continue our vigil for and on behalf of all of our troops wherever they may be, whether in Iraq, Afghanistan, in the Asian theater, elsewhere, or even stateside. We pray for their families and loved ones. We hallow the memory of those who have given their lives.

We are anticipating this evening, our President's speech in which he is expected to announce the close of the phase of the inital intense military action. We ask that you will surround him with angels during this historic speech, and overshadow him. We have been praying on his behalf for your guidance. If you have counseled him with an important message or vision for our nation, please let him articulate it, and let us as a nation hear and see it and unite behind it.

We are grateful, Father, for the magnificent work that our young people have been doing in both Afghanistan and Iraq. We continue to ask for your intercession in these two nations. Raise up leaders in those nations who are servants of the people and not venal power hungry autocrats. Grant the peoples of these nations and the entire Arab world the vision of what freedom means. We saw on tv the report that a man who wanted to start a newspaper in Baghdad came to one of the US headquarters and asked who he needed to see to get approval and clearance for his stories, and was bewildered to learn that none was needed. Father, help these people learn quickly the fruits and disciplines in the practice of the divine gift of freedom.

We call together for the protection of those same fruits and disciplines in our own nation. We have seen in all facets of life in our society an erosion of those freedoms. Father, while we have been liberators of these two nations, let their liberation be as an inspiration and confirmation of our own roots in freedom. Help us to air out some of the misconceptions and mistakes we have made over the years during our practice of freedom. Help us to reclaim those freedoms which may have been lost and protect those which we yet possess. Guide and counsel all our leaders and our people in this holy work.

While we pray for our entire nation, we have learned of a sad event for which we offer our prayers. We have seen in New Sweden, Maine, the arsenic poisoning of 13 members of a Lutheran church in that community. Father, we pray for the one who was taken home as a result of the poisoning, and his family. We pray for those who have been ill. We pray for the entire community and their law enforcement officials to find quickly the cause of this incident. Let only your will be done in this situation.

Our Father we as a nation have always had concerns about our brothers and sisters in other nations, and while this is a day of prayer for our own nation, we offer prayers for our coalition allies and their nations. We also offer prayers for the school in Bingol, Turkey which was buried by earthquake. We pray for the children who are still buried and who have been determined to be alive. Assist the rescue workers. Assist and console the families and loved ones of those who have children who may have been called home.

Father, we place together our nation on the altar and we pray the you will continue bless her. Let only your will be done.

Amen
