Washington, DC-area Freepers interested in Lincoln and/or the War Between the States should take note of a seminar held later today on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University:
The conventional wisdom in America is that Abraham Lincoln was a great emancipator who preserved American liberties. In recent years, new research has portrayed a less-flattering Lincoln that often behaved as a self-seeking politician who catered to special interest groups. So which is the real Lincoln?
On Wednesday, April 16, Thomas DiLorenzo, a former George Mason University professor of Economics, will host a seminar on that very topic. It will highlight his controversial but influential new book, The Real Lincoln: A New Look at Abraham Lincoln, His Agenda, and an Unnecessary War. In the Real Lincoln, DiLorenzo exposes the conventional wisdom of Lincoln as based on fallacies and myths propagated by our political leaders and public education system.
The seminar, which will be held in Rooms 3&4 of the GMU Student Union II, will start at 5:00 PM. Copies of the book will be available for sale during a brief autograph session after the seminar.
If I were a socialist then I would be supporting your claim and the claim of every poor downtrodden black in America, wouldn't I? Get rich at government expense, just compensation for wrongs done decades before you were born, all that jazz? No, I'm not a socialist like Davis.
That is true. Even scholars who want to agree with DiLorenzo's thesis find the book very sloppy. Go here for a review. But those who disagree with DiLorenzo really haven't yet had their say in the press, so the final verdict will be even more negative.
The theses DiLorenzo presents aren't new: they go back to the post bellum writings of Confederate apologists. Historians have long since disposed of most of his charges, and they'll disprove them again, when Di Lorenzo's book shows up on their radar screens.
Of course Lincoln had been a politician and was a man of his times. I don't know of anyone who's studied the period who seriously thinks otherwise. Admitting that the man was human shouldn't be taken as some great new revelation. It's the beginning of understanding, not the end.
Look you yankee vermin moron, about the only think I've argued with your worthless hide about was your comparison of Lincoln to Christ. And other northerners agreed it was a bad comparison. I can respect them.
Your throwing David Duke into this just shows your continued ignorance. Sit back and let some of the others argue the Northern side.
If you had been a leader for the Union, y'all would ALL be livin' in Virginia now...
Jefferson wouldn't have seized a percentage of all agricultural output without compensation, justifying as 'for the war effort'. Jefferson wouldn't have required that every commercial blockade runner reserve a large percentage for government cargo without adequate compensation even though the ship owner took all the risk, justifying as 'for the war effort'. Jefferson wouldn't have impressed slave labor at will without compensation, justifying as 'for the war effort'. Jefferson wouldn't have extended enlistments, jailed opponents without trial, censored newspapers, implemented a system requiring every citizen, black or white, to get approval from the local military commander just to travel from one town to another. Lincoln was a tyrant? Please! Toss in the fact that he made sure that he ran unapposed and ignored his constitution at will and it's clear. Tyranny thy name is Jefferson Davis.
You are in complete denial but that is not uncommon with war criminal apologists.
Sorry? Who is apologizing for which tyrant here?
"Livin' in Virginia"? Isn't that a contradiction in terms?
I'm sorry, that's a personal attack and an insult to my father who fought in Korea, my father-in-law who we just buried - a double Bronze Star recipient from WWII and my grandfather who was exposed to nerve gas in France in WWI. It's even an insult to my two great-grandfathers who fought for the Confederacy, and to my Huguenot ancestors who were here in the 1600s settling this country.
I bust my butt every day trying to make things better in this country. You know absolutely NOTHING about me, except that I'm a southernor.
You completely ignore the fact that I, unlike other southernors, have said I have a great deal of respect for Abraham Lincoln. He was a courageous man dealing with an impossible task.
But you are so delusional that you can't even argue, so you result to cheap shots.
Yes, I suppose calling you an idiot and yankee vermin moron was also "personal." But considering you tried to link me to David Duke and you called me un-American, I think you got off easy.
I've pinged a few friends here (along with the management) who might differ with your assessment. My apologies to them for interrupting their regular freeping.
Only if you refer to Northern Virginia. That's been infiltrated by them yankees.
I was living in Arlington at the time. It's a different world than the rest of the state south of Frederickburg.
Gentlemen, you can't fight here! This is the war room!
Seriously, if we can't have a civil dicussion about a civil war then what can we?
Not to worry. I'm out of here. Let me know when children's hour is over.
Care to find the post where I said that?
I can save you some time. It doesn't exist.
I figured War of Southern Rebellion had too many big words for you.
