CNN says its silence on Iraq atrocities had nothing to do with maintaining access

A top CNN executive kept quiet about some atrocities in Iraq not because the network wanted to protect access but because it worried about putting lives in danger, CNN said Monday.

Eason Jordan, CNN's chief news executive, revealed the incidents in an op-ed piece in The New York Times Friday headlined "The News We Kept to Ourselves."

There are so many things wrong with this...

They are only reporting it now, because we have Iraq's secret service files and will find out eventually.

They claim to worry about putting lives at danger, but they once the reporter was released, they could have pulled out and then reported it. That would have prevented other journalists from being at risk.

I think any journalist that suffered from torture after CNN"s experience should be able to file a lawsuit against CNN for not warning the world that Iraq tortures journalists.

The guy whose life would have been in danger was not a CNN reporter--he was an Iraqi working as a camera man. He and his family would have been in danger unless CNN offered to have him and his entire extended family relocated. Doesn't sound very good.

The initial 'editorial' in the NYT suggested 13 trips were made to Baghdad to maintain access. What was the real purpose of the trips then, if not for access?

They have forgotten (if they ever really knew) what truth is. I can't watch that channel for 30 seconds without feeling like I need to vomit. CNN truely makes me sick!

If they can pay AlQaeda hundreds of thousands of dollars for tapes, they can pay to relocate a few Iraqi's.


The cameraman was still a CNN employee. They reported earlier (last week) that torture of journalists were common. If a free press can be intimidated so easily, it's not much of a free press. And torture of people working for foriegn firms would not have gone on, if it was routinely reported and people knew about it.

It's still complicity.
