The Bush administration is bucking the National Rifle Association and supporting a renewal of the assault weapons ban, set to expire just before the presidential election. "The president supports the current law, and he supports reauthorization of the current law," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told Knight Ridder.
Tossing out the ban on semiautomatic weapons is a top priority of the NRA. Bush said during his presidential campaign that he supported the ban, but it was less clear whether he would support an extension.

I am also angry. The only way I can rationalize this is that they do think it will be a close election, and must play to the ignorant middle. Good cop, bad cop, or perhaps Bush does believe that assault rifles are extreme. Either way it is disappointing.

We send people to Congress to uphold the Constitution. Why do we need to keep reminding them of their oath?

or perhaps Bush does believe that assault rifles are extreme The so-called Assault Weapons Ban is far from being just about assault rifles. Read the link in my post #225.

We send people to Congress to uphold the Constitution. Why do we need to keep reminding them of their oath? First of all, most of them wouldn't know the Constitution if it hit them in the face. And secondly, most view their re-election as infinitely more important that their oath.
To: Mr. Mojo
Maybe all elected officials need to take a remedial course on the Constitution before taking office. Taught by who????

My 8th grade history teacher would be the perfect candidate (if he's still alive). He'd whip their sorry asses into shape in less than a fortnight.

Come on, this is just strategery. Bush knows so much more about everything than us common folk, and I'm sure someday, when all the facts come out, we'll get it and marvel at his mastery. And besides, he's so cute. I can't wait til the next picture of him wearing a cowboy hat!!

There was never any doubt in my mind that he would do something like this.
If it hits his desk, and he signs it Bush will have lost my vote forever.

Then your non-vote will elect Hillary Clinton and Attorney General Schumer.
Maybe it will be better to just bring on CW2 that much faster, while there are still people who remember freedom young enough to fight. <PBut make no mistake, a non-vote for Bush will elect your worst nightmare.

We have seen your type before. You will be happy when the government "lets" you keep a shotgun and a bolt action rifle.
Then they will ban "sniper rifles" (scopes) and you will be fine with that. Who needs to shoot Bambi 500 yards away, right?
Then your "assault shotgun" will go. But you don't own one anyway, so you won't care.
