Tanks on the bridge ... one took a shot.
The lead tank looks like it has a PWO/MIA flag flying from it.

"The debris that was flying up in front of the camera was incoming machine gun fire"
That was my thought as well, and still, after watching it on TiVO umpteen times. It looks like chips of the building flying up from bullets hitting the edge of the roof.

Just confirmed on FNC, that camera man WAS shot and DIED at the hospital. I think they said AL Jazeera, but the feed was from Abu Dhabi, so who knows. Nothing creepier than watching what it's like to be shot at. Fox talking heads are idiotic tonight. That camera was LIVE, and from Abu Dhabi TV. Not Al Jazeera. ALso, the al jazeera guy died in a missile attack elsewhere.
FOX guy even suggested it was a B-1 bomber that attacked the camera.!!!! LOL!

"I think it's the JOB of the media to try to find a neutral vantage point, to the extent possible.
The media doesn't need to provide government spin. Let the government do its own spinning."
I suppose a "neutral vantage point" would equate Saddam with Bush, and US/British forces with Iraqis, and any imported jihadis that enter the fray.
Similarly, such neutrality would equate the version of events put forth by Coalition Hq. in Qatar, with the Iraqi Minister of Information.
Neutrality fails to make any judgement, as to moral issues, and as to what is true, and what is false.
I have no problem drawing moral distinctions, and the truth should take precedence over the false.
Any media which fails to make moral judgements, and to search for truth is just propoganda.

These terrorists only want to kill unarmed Americans!

My point exactly.

There is good footage of the lead tank taking out the camera postion. It was taken from the hotel where they keep the press -- on the east side of the river. The Telephoto lens is lined up perfectly with the lead tank and the Abu-Dhabi camera postion. BOOM! Big cloud of brown smoke. No more camera.
If the Abu-Dhabi camera had been panned to the left to show the lead tank, you could have watched the round coming straight in!

I was hoping Baghdad Bob would be on tonight. Bob may have been having a late lunch with Soddom yesterday.
And he had such a bright future in stand up comedy.

"Fox talking heads are idiotic tonight"
Well, I'll *never* call Mansour an idiot, ;). However, his main TP is Al Qaeda, so I was surprised to see him tonight.
As for Brian, well just imagine if we were watching Shep. He'd be hysterical, pale, eyes the size of dinner plates after that clip where the cameraman takes it in the noggin. no doubt about it.
I'll take the worst of FNC any day over CNN/ABC/CBS/NBC/MSNBC, etc.

Last night Allyson Camarata was just flummoxed trying to name military equipment. They should ASK the experts not guess.

Now that I have had time to look at it, it appears it was not brass flying up, but concrete and other debris......
To: Joe Hadenuf
Just watched it on TIVO frame by frame, and it is definitely concrete chips flying up from incoming rounds. My guess is that the crew of the tanks saw the reflection of the camera and assumed it was a sniper scope and opened up.
To: bootyist-monk
Fox radio just said there are instruments that can detect scopes, etc. and a camera would look like a scope...

I am sooo confused. The reporters are in another building? So where was the reporter for Aljazeera stationed to get killed?
I thought all reporters were in the same place.

Okay guys, until someone proves otherwise, I'll take your word for it.
I was watching the live pictures for quite awhile before the incident, and thought I saw brass flying up in front repeatedly, but I don't have any way to prove it now.
I guess that just goes to show that human witnesses aren't worth a damn. ;-)
To: EaglesUpForever
Yeah, that sounds right to me. I think that they can also detect infrared. I don't know if the weapon will fire automatically on detection, but the lens of a camera and the lens of scope probably look about the same when you are under attack. Can't blame the tank crew for taking proactive action in this circumstance. My feeling is that all of these reporters that decided to stay in Baghdad assumed a certain amount of risk, and this is one of them.
To: swheats
The Al Jazeera incident was way earlier in the day at another location. Had nothing at all to do with this.
To: bootyist-monk
What is the difference between a journalist and a spotter? Who was "protecting" the journalist?
To: swheats
Most of the press are in the hotel that is on the eastern side of the Tigris. They're not allowed to leave unless they leave their cameras behind, and are escorted by Iraqi security.
There do seem to be acceptions, perhaps native Iraqi press?
To: EternalVigilance
In real time, it does look like brass, but when you slow it down frame by frame, what you see are cone shaped chips of concrete. Man, I love TIVO.
To: Hazzardgate
Baghdad Bob threw a hissy fit at them!
He also threw a few of them out for a couple of days. How do we know Iraqi's didn't hit Al-Jazeera?
