Support the Troops rally in HARVARD SQUARE!
Posted on 04/05/2003 7:44:00 PM PST by A_Conservative_in_Cambridge
There was an impressive show of support for our troops and our Commander in Chief this afternoon in Harvard Square, Cambridge. Yes, you read that correctly: HAHVUD SQUARE! Right in the middle of zip code 02138, "the most opinionated zip code in America" according to a popular local T shirt. I estimate that there were at least 25 of us waving the Stars and Stripes and cheering for the good 'ole US of A. The cold and dampness were dispelled by the enthusiastic response we got from many bypassers. The horn blasts from passing fire trucks and ambulances were particularly gratifying, as was the VERY loud honk from a Texaco gasoline truck driver.
The rally was largely due to the efforts of a newly-formed patriotic organization at Harvard Law School (see http://www.studentsprotectingamerica.com). Fellow Freepers included Lev the photographer and Aaron the poet (see http://www.poetsforthewar.org). I also had the pleasure of meeting a visitor from Miami, an anti-Castro activist who hopes that "Fidel" will soon follow Saddam into the Dustbin of History (see http://123CUBA.COM).
The only discordant note in the afternoon's festivities was the arrival of a noisy band of anti-American protesters wielding palestinian [sic] flags and a drum. They went through their whole repertoire of Bush-bashing and America-trashing slogans, but we drowned them out with our own chants and songs. After a while the leftist riff-raff ran out of slogans and vocal cords, turned tail, and headed off into the rain.
A note for future patriotic events: We really must not let the lefties upstage us with their silly chants and drums. I suspect the pinkos would have left the scene a lot sooner if we had been able to muster our own patriotic DRUM & BUGLE CORPS! How about it, fellow freepers? Any musicians out there?
In closing, I hope that today's Patriotic Presence in 02138-land was the opening act of a new movement to FREE HARVARD SQUARE of empty leftist slogans and politically-correct posturing on the part of spineless "intellectuals" (see Tenured Radicals: How Politics Has Corrupted Our Higher Education by Roger Kimball).

In addition to having a rather non-PC name, they APPEAR to be be sympathetic to our cause, as they are already scheduled to appear at a
Flag Day parade in Quincy (6/14) - among other apparently PATRIOTIC events...

As a former Masshole, I bow to you!
Looks like you caught the leftists so off-guard they forgot to bring their puppets.
Bet they haven't been so disoriented in Harvard Square since the last bad batch of acid passed through.

Well done! In 1975, for the Bicentennial, I put a Don't Tread on Me flag on the grave of Sam Adams. It stayed there for months.
From the other side of the belly of the beast...we had a support-the-troops rally in Davis CA yesterday. Time for regime change here.

Thank you, RonDog . . . you the MAN! I will contact the Crusaders. Meanwhile, I am also interested in hearing from musicians, especially Drummers, who could be on call for local events. You don't have to be especially talented; the pony-tailed pinko Drummer Boy that we met yesterday in Harvard Square was certainly not Marine Band material!
The other item I would like to add to my traveling Freeper Kit (which now contains several American flags, a bunch of "Free Iraq" posters, and a pith helmet) is a COLONIAL UNIFORM. The lefties like to think of themselves as "revolutionaries", but the only part they get right is that they are "revolting" to listen to and to look at.
Here in good 'ole New England, we have a rich tradition to draw upon, and those of us who love the flag and revere the Constitution must reclaim the symbols of our proud revolutionary past. Every April, for example, several hundred local residents get into full colonial Minuteman regalia and assemble at Lexington Common to "re-enact" the battles of Lexington and Concord. I'm hoping that a few of these folks could join us at Freep events. Are any of you out there in Freep-land? Or do you have friends or neighbors who are re-enactors?

Hi there, and thanks for taking the message to Cambridge! :-) I have often thought it would be good to have a song or slogan that is catchy and not hard to sing -- then I heard the new song by Bo Diddley on the Michael Savage show. It's called "We Are Americans" and the chorus is great! I understand Bo sent tapes out all over the country, so maybe your local conservative radio station got one and can play it for you. Not exactly fifes and drums, but something!

As always, the party gets interesting after I leave. I was there and unfortunately missed the wackos. Ah, well took them long enough to get there. In addition, i believe as a general trend, the bigger the car, the more likely they were to honk (pick-up trucks, blue-collar working people vans). Kind of says something about how normal working class people support this war and America. Loved the guy who had the van with the Saddam wanted poster and Free Iraq bumper stick on his window :)
As my MIT professor said, "No one really believes in Communism anymore, except for people in Cambridge."
Can you believe it? I found a poly sci prof at MIT who openly supports this war.

This afternoon I called up WTTK, the talk radio station at 96.9 FM in Boston, and I got on the air for about 10 minutes with Avi Nelson. I told the story of our adventures at Park Street and in Harvard Square, and called attention to this marvelous Web site and to the new organization at Harvard Law School (www.studentsprotectingamerica.com). Mr. Nelson told the story of his hostile reception at a Harvard lecture hall during the 1960s. Things haven't changed much, since conservatives like David Horowitz and Benjamin Netanyahu are typically met by leftist goon squads when they appear on campus these days.
For all of you Boston folks, don't be afraid to call the talk shows, particularly Jay Severin & Avi Nelson on 96.9 FM (phone number 617-822-1969), David Brudnoy on WBZ 1030 AM. It's a great way to get the word out about our Support our Troops events, and you will find these hosts VERY receptive to what we've been up to.
i need to find out about these pro-troops / pro-America rallies in advance.... i'd like to go to one..

I spent a summer and fall driving a cab in Cambridge while at MIT. I'm imagining my view of this sitting in my cab at the cabstand there....

Now, I'm from Chambridge I was born there and I am the biggest fan of President Bush and our troops as you will meet out there. I'm happy to see the Pro troop rally in Harvard Square. Keep it up and we may turn them all around. At least some of them.
