About 100 Iraqi soldiers engaged Kurdish ``peshmergas'' with small arms fire just after dark. U.S. special forces called in air support while about 150 Kurds fought from their positions around the bridge near Bardarash, 12 miles northeast of Mosul. The U.S. forces estimated 50 Iraqis were killed, but there were no casualties among among the Kurds or Americans. The other Iraqi soldiers fled. ...

U.S. troops roll to edge of Baghdad

Troops make their way closer to the city center of Karbala on Thursday.

Army forces launched a nighttime attack on Saddam International Airport just outside Baghdad on Thursday and fought running battles with Iraqis along the city's southern fringes.

Other developments:

• U.S. soldier killed in possible friendly fire incident
• Patriot missile may have downed F-18C Hornet
• Rescued POW recuperating in Germany
