Uprising By Shiites in Basra Underway; British Pouring Artillery into City

Just monitored on Sky News: embedded reporter says Shiites in Basra have begun, in his words, a "popular uprising" against the Saddam forces still in the city. British Army units are "pouring" artillery into the city (likely isolated areas) preparing to move in.

In case you haven't noticed, the "nation" to which we are responding differently in this "war on terrorism" is the United States.

I see (often violent) protestors still able to voice their opinions in the streets. I see the (usually idiotic) press still able to publish their drivel. Other than tighter security at airports (which is hardly unreasonable), I just don't see what you're talking about. Do you have examples (that are a result of the WOT, and not just the general encroachment of socialism)?

This report is being denied by British officials.. oh well, it was good while it lasted.

First off, it's not being denied, they're saying they "have on knowledge" of it. Secondly, the admission curve of "officials" is often hours, or days behind reality.

There are reasons not to acknowledge certain facts at times, so I would take the British officials statement in that light.

It may or may not be real.

My best guess is we had it, Shiites were seeing it being taken back by Saddam's boys(at least temporarily) and were hesitant until then to get involved(because of reasons stated in other posts). They want us to win and they realize we need their help to do so(ok, we probably would win anyway, but what's the difference between dying when we start shelling the whole area to protect our troops or dying trying to win their land back--honor!) These people want their land and want us to win and they've realized that perhaps they may die whether by the regime or our shells at some point and like patriots of old, they have decided to go out fighting and dying if necessary instead of cowering to a bunch of bullies(Saddam's guys). Good for these Shiites...the more Iraqis are willing to take back their land with our help, the harder it will be for Saddam to stay in power--like someone said, the ants realize they are more powerful than the grasshoppers...by sheer numbers alone.


OH, and I thought eventually we would see these folks do this. It just took them getting p*ssed enough to forget about the fears of us pulling out. Good for them. God willing, they will be liberated and they will be remembered as patriots in their country.

Good point. I have read that no body knows exactly what is going on there, it might be a general uprising against the Saddamists and the Coalition. Time will tell.

At noon, the ABC, CBS and NBC news channels here in Idaho all reported this as taking place and underway ... NBC said it was confirmed.

There was no talk of any kind of official UK denial.

We shall see. I hope it is taking place and believe it is probable. The Shi'ites have a history of rising up against Saddam ... and if they really believe we will help this time ... and if water and food are getting short ... I would say that it is probable.

It's starting to be reported all over. Now if we can get those hundred thousand fighting Kurds in action, this thing will pick up. We have a Marine General up there, hopefully he's there to organize them.

Hell, if you could get those Kurds down to Baghdad, we could just sit back and watch them go after the pro-Saddam troops. I'm sure they'd be happy to oblige.

This report originated with Sky News, which in my observation has had the most wildly unreliable information since the outset of this conflict. Indeed, I've reached the point where I routinely ignore anything I see connected with Sky News unless it's directly corroborated by another source.

That's it?! That's the government probing to which you refer? You do realize we've been attacked (recently, and in the very city to which you refer), we're in a (real shooting) war and there is still a real threat of terrorist attacks? This isn't happening in most of the rest of the country, BTW. Could it be because NYC was once a target?

I hope you can come up with some more substantial examples than that.
