CNN: Apache helicopters shot up in Republican Guard attack
CNN live ^ | March 23, 2003 | cnn

Posted on 03/23/2003 7:49:21 PM PST by mikegi

Live report from Karl Penhaul after Apache choppers attacked Republican Guards near Karbala (sp?). This is north of Najaf and WSW 70mi of Baghdad.

He reports that our Apaches were shot up pretty bad. The IRG put up a "wall" of AAA. After returning to base, Apaches were "strewn around" instead of being parked neatly. He wouldn't confirm that all our Apaches made it back.

No kiddin'. I have a nephew in the 101st Airborn. You want to take a guess at how the news of the traitorius b@stard fragging the command affected me? Still, I didn't publically jump all over the brass and question their ability to make decisions, OR depend on the media for information.

A good question to ask is....why was a Muslim who has been "behaving strangely" for a few days and told he would not be allowed to advance with the rest of the brigade allowed to guard hand grenades? If the man is a "Black Muslim" as in Farrakhan's Nation of Islam why was he allowed to be a member of your nephew's unit at all, or even be in the US Army for that matter?

I can ask those questions. Its a good thing to ask those questions. If you classify that as "jumping all over the brass" then so be it.

I'd guess, they may be in very tight mountain areas and would require a more agile flight vehicle than an A-10.

I don't think there's a mountain within a hundred miles of where they are.

The Warthog drivers are flying that way because they know that when you are in Injun country, flying straight and level for more than three seconds is how you get killed.

You are right on target.

Also, there are a lot thugs in the Republican Guard who will face some severe charges when Iraq surrenders. So they might just opt to go down fighting.

EXACTLY. that's what i've been screaming all day! even fox is giving us that crap. "heavy resistance" -- they fired their weapons! "heavy casualties" -- nine men down while 40 iraqi tanks are burning hulks and enemy artillery and infantry are decimated.

what's with the propaganda?

Wouldn't "Karballa Pass" indicate at least a couple of good sized hills? Otherwise, how do you have a "pass"? I dunno...

I am really, really getting pissed off by the media's reporting of this war. Even Fox is little better.

I feel the same way. On watching the cr*p coming out of CNN and pMSNBC I really have to wonder whose side they are on? It's unbelievable. Aaron Brown keeps blathering about what a terrible day it has been for our military...as if the expectation was that we would take ZERO casualties in this war. My god, we lost a few brave men yesterday while decimating (vaporizing) every Iraqi division in our path, killing thousands of our enemies and the media is spinning it like we are losing the war! Heck, the Iron Fist of our military has moved so fast towards Baghdad that they have out run their supply lines.

I hope millions of other Americans are reading it the same way. We have a TREASONOUS Media that is the ANTI-AMERICAN to the CORE. Fire these Bastards!

"It was definitely worth a shot. But it's time to change, and I am certain it will. If you think we should continue along just as we have on days 1-4 then I don't understand you"

Yes it was worth a shot. However, you will recall that just last Thursday when festivities slowly began, the American public was warned NOT to expect a swift victory.

Our leaders didn't walk into this with their eyes shut. Our main plan is executing well, and we're compensating for the unexpected with admirable speed. We compensated with admirable speed even before the start of pitched battle.

Of course we're not going to continue on as we have the last 3-4 days, because we'll be in Baghdad tomorrow. I don't follow your assumption that our tactics have remained static. It's been a long day, and my brain cells are probably reaching critical mass. I just don't understand what it is you think our military has been doing so terribly wrong.

We live in a world where High school grads call the leaders of the country "stupid"

Actually, we have no shortage of high school *dropouts* who call the leaders of the country stupid. Many of them are worthless Hollywood types who never did an honest day's work in their lives.

I had an idea about those JDAMs. What if we put encoded homing beacons on some of the JDAMS, activated when dropped, then simple seeker heads on the rest of the load of weapons, comprised of dumb bombs, and then sent in B52s with say, 25% of there bomb loads comprised of JDAMS, the rest seeker bombs, could be a cheap way to accurately obliterate targets from very high altitude?

No good. If a particular JDAM with a homing beacon goes off target you can end up with a very expensive crater next to an unscathed target....

Because between 1/10 and 1/5 cluster bomblets fail to go off, leaving a minefield in any area saturated with them, in effect. We intend to move through this area. Hellfires from Apaches at night are a perfectly reasonable way of KOing large numbers of armored vehicles.

Their own television reporter said that 70 tanks were killed, but they omitted that from the print story.

I didn't hear that. I heard we were beaten back...what gives in this story??

Stick bombs do remarkably little to T-72s. These are not VC light infantry. Attack helos, at night, using ATGMs, are the army's standard way of dealing with masses of enemy armored targets. More lopsided than driving into them with M-1s - though that also works. Notice, they are talking about helos being -damaged- some reports have -one- pilot being -wounded- but making it back. In return, they probably destroyed 1/3 to 1/2 of an armored division, in a couple of hours.

We lost a few people today. It was sad. But we gained ground, and killed far more of the enemy than they killed of us. How was it a BAD day?

I'm really tired of these qagmire-ites. I guess after we lost 2000+ at Pearl, WWII was all over!

I AM questioning everything about the perp, and so is the military. However, don't get sidetracked : the questions you were asking previously had to do with our military tactics somehow being static the first few days of the fight. Jumping all over the brass. When I repeatedly stated that they HAVEN'T been static, that you were paying attention to too much media hype, you stated a concern for our troops. The story about my nephew was simply put here as an example of my OWN very real concern for our troops, and I haven't found a reason to publically jump the brass over it yet.
