The active war resumed about two weeks ago. It snuck in unnoticed.

What will we hear on Sunday (from the Azores!)

That Azores summit guarantees no war till next week earliest ( unless Saddam's syphilis kicks in and he starts it). We will not start a war with the Potus out of position.

I have a more fundamental question: What is a JDAM?

Name of new dog belonging to a friend who is on ultimate point for the coming action.

-- I think what makes this particular event interesting is that when US forces have attacked ground radar sites, etc, in N & S Iraq, it's been with air-to-ground fighters (F-15, F-16, A-7?). Bombers aren't normally know for working in that area. --

My guess is that this was done to keep the Iraqi radar operators on edge to mask the start of the big assault. I would expect that we will be mixing up the types of planes, flight routes, quantity of planes, etc. over the next few days. It is all part of the game.

...Didn't Flash Gordon fly one of these in the old serials?....

I think Flash Gordon had a rocket ship, not a B1

the C-5 was on the ground for people to walk through.

When I was stationed at NAS Rota, Spain in 1986, John Gardner was there for research for one of his James Bond books and I was given the opportunity to show him around the base. There was a C-5 there refueling on its weekly round-trip to Bahrain so I got him a tour of the plane and he was equally impressed. It didn't appear in his book, but I do have a couple of autographed copies of his other works.

That's a picture of a B-2, not a B-1

I'm talking about the old Flash Gorden serials with Buster Crabb. The rocket ship looked just like that.

That's why I read threads backwards. Find something, or someone interesting and backtrack to the reply they are replying "to:"

Your "B1" looks exactly like a B2.

The B1 in post 39 looks like a B1.

great link on JDAM's ... very educational. Didn't know what they were before going there. In summary, this says it all:

"Airman Magazine, June 2001 -- JDAM, for joint direct attack munition, was born from a Desert Storm shortfall. During the war, the Air Force found it needed a bomb to drop in any weather with near-precision. One that could hit within 30 feet of a target. Almost like laser-guided bombs, minus the high price tag."

I can't tell you how impressed you all know a b1 from a b2 and what a jdamn is,,War and munitions talk just thrills me. I suspect FR ladies would, given the choice, choose a man who knew his b planes and bombs over a man who could explicate a sonnet and knows his wine and cheese.

Nope. The Iraqi military was Soviet and French supplied. The Iranians were using American and Israeli hardware supplied when the Shah was still in power and re-supplied for funds that were sent on to the Contras. We did provide intelligence and other kinds of intangible support but that was strictly to keep the Iranians from winning that war.

The Labour MP that said this is repeating a canard that's been floating around since Gulf War I. He's telling the same lie the left tried to use in '90 and '91 to smear Dubya's father.

The question asked by vbmoneyspender still stands: where was all this reported American hardware in '91?

Does anyone think the war will formallly start while Bush is in the AZores. If so they must fear a bomb in DC but even if that were the case I don't think Bush would leave. When does Bush come back home?

I would think attacking while Bush was in the Azores would come as a big surprise. Perhaps that is the plan.
