In his oral report before the UN Security Council last Friday, chief weapons inspector Hans Blix somehow failed to mention an undeclared Iraqi drone capable of flying more than 90 miles to deliver biochemical agents. News of this spectacular find was relegated to the fine print of Dr. Blix's 173-page single-spaced written thesis, along with word of 10,000 liters of anthrax hidden throughout Saddam's Magic Kingdom.
"That's preposterous," you say. "Janeane Garofalo insures us 'there's no evidence that [Saddam Hussein] has weapons of mass destruction.' Why would the former co-star of a hit sitcom such as The Larry Sanders Show lie to us?"
Good question. Too bad I haven't got the answer. I mean, I don't know why the former co-star of a hit sitcom such as The Larry Sanders Show would lie to you. I don't know why the UN's chief weapons inspector would lie to you, either, but I'm not accusing Dr. Blix of doing so. I pretty much don't have to. His omission of facts speaks for itself -- it says, "Liar, liar, pants on fire," because he hid the smoking gun.
Okay, I lied. I know why Dr. Blix would choose to deceive you. It's because the fix is in.
What's happening to America right now is at least a decade in the making. The end of the Cold War made us the world's only superpower, and let's face the facts: The world doesn't like that.
The disgustingly wealthy dictators of impoverished nations hate us because every American can live like a king. They hate what we stand for. Most everyone else hates us just for standing tall. Look at mammoth lands like Russia and China working together on the Security Council. Look at France and Germany as they all but declare war on the country that saved and subsequently rebuilt them 50 years ago. Look at Canada and Mexico turning on us from up above and down below. These countries have a lot to gain from America's losses. Even the Vatican -- which couldn't be bothered with the Holocaust -- is against us.
The proof is in the pudding, my friend, and there's pudding all over the place.
The peace movement itself is predicated on a lie. If you think containment works, turn on the History Channel and catch some footage of the Nazis hardly containing themselves all over Europe. If that's the kind of peace the UN is striving for, let me be the first to say no thank you.
The appeasement of Hitler begat the world's bloodiest war. Like Saddam, he violated the weapons treaties of a world body -- the now defunct League of Nations -- and the world paid a price. They could've stopped him and they didn't. Now they can stop Saddam and they won't. They'd prefer to hide behind a slew of anti-war buzzwords, all of which are either misconceptions or outright deceptions.
Consider:
1. They say it's a rush to war, as if 12 years constitutes a rush in any sense of the word.
2. They say America's use of force will be unilateral, as if the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, and Australia are chopped liver.
3. They say there's no precedent for a preemptive strike, as if September 11th never happened.
Well, damn it, September 11th did happen. The savages who pulled it off assembled in Germany, I might add, and the French made a bestseller out of a book that blamed the Pentagon. Both countries voted in favor of 1441 last fall, but, much like Saddam, neither took the threat of "serious consequences" seriously. Do we really need these people on our side?
George W. Bush says, "It's time for people to show their cards," but I say all the weaseling means their bluff's already been called. These countries have billion-dollar ties to Saddam's regime. They want to preserve that. They don't care if that brutal bastard stays in power. They don't care if he hands anthrax to al-Qaeda. If it cripples our Postal Service and Capitol Hill again, super! Serves us right for being a superpower!
We were there for the French when they needed us. Now that our national security's in jeopardy, they lead the charge against us. Let's never forget how they've shown their true colors -- mostly shades of yellow -- lately.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Jacques Chirac warned European Union hopefuls not to stand in our corner. I can't help but wonder what my grandfather would say about that if he were alive today.
He was born in Europe in the early part of the 20th century, my grandfather was, and moved to America before he was 20-years old. He came here with nary a dime in his pocket but a dream in his heart. That would be the American dream, of course, and if you're already saying, "I wish I had a dime for every story that started like that," then it goes without saying that stories like his were a dime a dozen back then. Millions made good on those stories, too. Millions also made sacrifices. My grandfather did both. Despite having gone to all that trouble to move here, he went back to Europe to defend the motherland in an American uniform. That was right around the time when the Nazis killed his sister.
I don't believe an anti-war group like Not In Our Name would've sat well with him.
The veteran's flag issued upon his passing a couple of years ago now sits in a triangular case atop my bookshelf. I look at it sometimes and think about the things he fought for. He was a part of the Greatest Generation. Those guys were so great, they didn't even have to be. They were great because they told you so. If they were around right now, I reckon they'd wipe their behinds with Saddam Hussein and all of his supporters, and then they'd beat up some Soviet holdovers just for kicks. They'd round up every fuzzy hat and vodka shot this side of Stalingrad, have some fun, and call it freedom. I'm fairly certain that's the way life's meant to be.
I'm proud to say my grandfather lent two fists to beating the bejeezus out of all that totalitarian Eurotrash. I wish more men like him were around today. Instead, we get an anti-American whitewashing, and Dr. Blix somehow forgets to add the fabric softener. Well, I'm not buying it. His manipulation of facts isn't accidental. It's his job.
Our job, on the other hand, is to root out madmen like Saddam.
In the words of an American president, "When you see a rattlesnake poised to strike, you do not wait until he has struck before you crush him." That wasn't GWB. That was FDR, in one of his famous fireside chats. The date: September 11, 1941.
It rang true then and it rings true now. It's just a shame the rattlesnake's grown so big.
To what Insurance Company did Ms. Garofalo pay money, and how much do we get in settlement for a claim if WMD are used?

No matter how much we might agree with the thrust of the article, to make this the only--or even the major--example of "containment" is ridiculous. See: USSR. Containment has worked in the past. The objection to both analogies is whether either one is . . . well, analagous . . . to a terrorist situation.
Sorry, Jonathan David Morris, you had a great article going there, until you started to repeat lies. You just had to throw it all in the crapper. Why should I believe anything you say, when you get that so thoroughly wrong?
Finally we have found something to agree upon.
As to the other thread, I used your post to make a point to the many who don't bother to show up and apologise for attacking the victims as somehow being involved in some dark way. Your explanation of your meaning was totally accepted by me and perhaps I should have responded to that. I apologise for not doing that.

Beat me to it. I find any kind of analysis difficult to accept from someone who doesn't know the difference between these words.
"Between?" If we're being such sticklers here, try "...differences among these words." Besides, insure and ensure are essentially the same.
