Police found Elizabeth Smart alive and in the company of a transient panhandler Wednesday, some nine months after she disappeared from her Salt Lake City home. Sandy police located Elizabeth in the suburb with Brian David Mitchell, who had worked odd jobs for the Smarts for five hours in November 2001 and was wanted for questioning. Salt Lake City Police Chief Rick Dinse said investigators are convinced Elizabeth was kidnapped, and released the name of Wanda Eileen Barzee as a second suspect in the crime.

, claiming that it's "obvious" what she's been doing (and claiming she's been doing it for TWO YEARS, i.e. beginning long before her abduction). Dr. Erickson would laugh in your face if he could see the things you're claiming his research proves. On the contrary, he would probably explicate further.
As to the observation that I said she was sexually active for two years...I intended just the opposite. She has had two years, IMHO, of sexual experience in those nine months, and has the physiology to prove it. Most, though not all, of the things that happen when a girl has unprotected sex happen and are COMPLETE within a mere Two Weeks.
If she had been sexually active before her abduction, the 'before' and 'after' photographs would have yielded much less information.
How is it possible for a girl in 9 months to have two years worth?...It is called "The Cooledge Effect". Look it up.
BTW, Erickson published relatively little. But more has been published about him and his techniques than perhaps any other psychiatrist save for Frued and Jung. One of those books is now out of print.
I should have purchased a case of Tranceformations by Bandler and Grinder in 1990, when the book sold for $7.50.
They now sell for more than $100 each, depending on the market. Would that Tech Stocks had done as well!

"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' ...Matthew 25:40
Sweet it reads Appy. But in this day and age, inviting "street people" into your home with young children? Surely there are other ways to meet your moral obligation to help the needy. He may have pleased The King, but look what he did for his daughter...Minutemen

I heard on Fox News that it's been reported Elizabeth Smart told the police "i'm not that Elizabeth Smart who ran away." Is this true? I'm not at a TV.....

I wasn't sure if she said that or not. I was under the impression they were speculating what would happen "if she" said that.

One of the police officers who first stopped them was asking questions. Elizabeth apparently said, "I bet you think I am her, well, I am not Elizabeth Smart." Or something to that effect.
To: ~Kim4VRWC's~
The officer was on MSNBC earlier. I caught the tail end of the interview.
The news media is also stating that Emmanuel was held in jail for 6 days in San Diego, while he had Elizabeth. The police departments are checking finger prints to confirm this.

If I were you, I'd spend more time researching the works of folks who have dealt with cult victims...Thank you for your reply.
Yesterday, when I went to Costco with my son, I heard the good news. By the time of checking out, the news had spread throughout the store like wildfire. All of us were very happy, given that in most of these cases the child doesn't survive even a day. I hurried home to see what the 'Freepers' would have to say.
But this morning, just seeing those photographs rang alarm bells. I had this intuitive feeling that Elizabeth had matured immensely during her 'captivity'. I did the facial comparisons on this PowerLeap upgraded Gateway using several Photo Editing packages including the marvelous freeware Irfanview. The physiological changes were there!
Now, 'cult' is the root of the word 'culture', and my son and I have had several spirited discussions about the 'American Cult' since the decision outlawing the Pledge of Allegence here in the West.
And, yes, in Colorado City, Arizona, we have a 'cult' or 'culture' of polygamy. And, no, the State leaves it alone. The last governor to try lost his political career.
Needles to say, people's real feelings are somewhat more complex than the politically correct resposnses they give to direct questions on the matter.

Only coffee, but that's better than hatching some of the silly theories about this incident I've been reading...for instance, the notion of being a conspiritorial runaway is too flaky for words. Anyone serious about that one *needs* a drink.
Using his daughter to play celebrity activist is tacky. He's supposed to be so overcome, after all. Just this week he was criticizing the Utah police for not being able to find his silent and disguised child...and now it turns out that Mom (not so) Smart brought the kookcase into kidnapping range for starters. The Amber Alert is already on for 38 steps, and there's nothing untoward in the Senator's handling of the new legislation.
From the beginning he's seemed "off"--I just wrote that down to trauma and stress. Now he thinks he's Mike Farrell. He's become addicted to the microphone, and he is definitely, absolutely goofy.

Thanks for that story, i_dont_chat. I had never heard about this. What an amazing story! What an incredibly brave girl!
To: Illbay
Ilbay, have you watched this guy on T.V.? I have, and I think he's a bit touched.
Furthermore, I think it's a pretty lame line of argumentation to dismiss my comments simply because they are directed towards a family that just happens to fall under the rubric of "traditional." I've known alot of screwed up traditional families.

The guy wasn't "invited into their home with young children," for crying out loud.
He came to the Smart home and worked ON THE ROOF for five hours helping Ed Smart re-roof the house.
He was never seen again, until the night almost a year later when he came and snatched Elizabeth.

I have no idea what you people have been watching. It couldn't have been the press conference I saw at lunchtime today, because your description in no way matches the man that I saw.

Put aside the Elizabeth Smart case for a second. I've never heard before that sexual activity can chage physical appearance. Is this for real?!
To: Lael
Sociologically speaking, cults are small, quiet, unknown groups with a leader. Nothing more, nothing less. by redefining cult, the true mean becomes lost.

A LOT of people tell beggers to get a job. Some say, I won't give you money, but I'll buy you "something", like food or clothes etc.. Others will give them a job.

In a woman, yes.
Please look up Uncommon Therapy by Halley. You will find that information at the end of a two or three page explication of how Humans REALLY learn about sex from their peer groups.
Milton Erickson makes the point that while the loss of Virginity in a male IS important, it pales in comparison to unprotected [i.e. no condom ] sex with a Female Virgin. Most people realize that most women are different after the first child, yet Erickson noticed that within TWO WEEKS of loss of her virginity [ again, it is critical that no condom be used ] her BODY changes irreparably.
I did not mention that a deflowered virgin female will have her shoe size increase by 1/4 in that two week time, but it does. Then, when that woman has children, her shoe size increases 1/4 for EACH child she has.
In other words, sexual intercourse is a very serious matter, and we in 'post modern' America just don't quite appreciate that.
