Nashville Woman Fired for Anti-War Letter
A woman was fired from her job at Jones Media after replying to an e-mail written by country singer Charlie Daniels.
Tamara Saviano worked for Jones Media Networks and Great American Country on Music row for three years. She was fired last Friday for responding to an e-mail written by Charlie Daniels.
In his e-mail, Daniels blasted Hollywood and the media for protesting a possible war with Iraq. His publicist, Kirk Webster sent the e-mail to people in the music and media industry.
When Saviano got the letter at her personal e-mail address, she wrote Webster and Daniels back outlining her anti-war beliefs.
Webster says Saviano put her company name on her e-mail and thats why he called Jones Media. But Saviano says it was clear her e-mail expressed her personal beliefs.
Webster says Charlie Daniels had nothing to do with Savianos firing.
If it were my company, and I was paying the rent, the insurance, the utilities, the healthcare, the salaries, etc. I would want my right to fire whomever I pleased, for what ever reason I pleased, to be preserved.
It's supposed to be a free friggin country.
Everybody I work with is a hippy liberal, and then wouldn't mourn if I got fired fired for my FR comments.
Such is life.
(hopefully, nobody's monitoring me...)
Good point. I have internet access at work but I only use it for company business. I express personal opinion on my personal internet account at home.
Thank God there are a few here who haven't forgotten recent experiences in being slammed everywhere for holding a contrary opinion and expressing it. That hasn't stopped for either side of the debate. I've been slammed many times over the years for my beliefs, so what?
It is debilitating to hear the anti-free-speech expressions here. I am not advocating a repeal of the 1st Amendment, but I believe the intent of our founding fathers is radically different than those envisioned by the likes of Bill & Hill and the effete group of cocktail socialists who control most of the avenues of communication in America.
There are quite a number of conservatives who do not back the war. That's fine with me. I don't understand the paradox, but, unlike Iraq, America is a free country.
They are people who love America and many have given their health and service as vets. Many of them were spit upon for their service and well recall that no one withdrew the freedom of speech from those who railed at them and cursed them. And if you knew me, Spirited, you would know that I have the deepest respect for those who have gone to war in my place and seen the horror and been smeared with the blood of men who became closer to them than family. Again, let me repeat, I am not advocating the revocation of free speech, but I am not going to stand by passively and allow protesters to go by unchallenged once President Bush announces that we are officially at war with Iraq. To me, the line in the sand with these anti-war/anti-Bush protesters is drawn at that moment.
In fact in recent years the people of this nation elected a man to the Presidency who had refused to serve and used freedom of speech to engender despising hate for them. Bill Clinton is no better in my book than Jane Fonda. The less I talk about either of them, the lower my blood pressure remains.
They and many other opposers of the conflict will not desert the troops or forsake the nation if we go to war but if they are mistreated you will drive them not to support any group which is seen to be at the base of the mistreatment, ESPECIALLY REGARDING FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. I got bits and pieces of this, but taken as a whole the thought was somewhat vague.
If this nation has lost that Constitutionally articulated right we should mourn that death before we begin. Assuming that you are referring to the 1st Amendment again, I could not agree more.
You wanted respect for your opinion when you were in the minority use wisdom then because what you "sow" may reap a bitter harvest if you do not and that may be all you have to ingest. Okay.
So when Klinton was ordering troops into Haiti, Somalia, Bosnia, etc...., am I to beleive that you did not critisize him? Or were you guilty of treason, by your own nazi-like definition?
Good grief, Jane Fonda never had to answer to any U.S. official for her treason! That doesn't lessen the reality of her crimes. A trip to the gallows would be my prescription.
Do you really not see the difference between engaging in Free speech and sitting in an anti-aircraft gun used against Americans pilots?
Before you start tossing around charges of "treason", you need to look at who sold Iraq some of their weapons and who told them it was okay to invade Kuwait the first time. They have more American blood on their hands than anyone who disagrees with this war.
You're wrong. They have no responsibility to "keep their mouths shut." In fact, they have the RIGHT to speak out.
Too many ignorant people here and elsewhere have no clue or concept of what is meant by "treason" or "sedition." It is NOT treasonous to speak your mind. It is not seditious to exercise your right of free speech.
If you and people like you are going to be so ignorant on this issue, then I invite you to refrain from EVER mentioning the Bill of Rights again.
Very ungood. I think you need to turn yourself in to Homeland Security for thoughtcrime.
Some of the statist anti-Freedom attitudes here are quite disgusting. As someone once said, most people don't want Freedom; they just want a tyranny to their liking.
BTW, just for kicks I'm reading "1984" again.... it's pretty chilling to see the similarities between his book and modern-day Amerika. Orwell was off by about 20 years.
If this idea of "it's treason to critisize the gov't during war" ever takes hold, it won't be very long before some tyrant decides that the best way to prevent dissent is to simply have a perpetual war.
And that would be far more dangerous than any words from an anti-war protestor.
BTW, on a side note, this world would be a much better place if more people throughout history had listened to anti-war protestors since the overwhelming majority of wars fought on this planet have been for the wrong reasons.
