Can Iraq Hit America?
Newsweek ^ | March 17, 2003 | Daniel Klaidman and Christopher Dickey

Posted on 03/09/2003 11:47:51 AM PST by Storm Eagle

"...as Washington threatens to bring Saddam’s own reign to an end, U.S. officials are afraid he might use such gruesome tactics against Americans. Outgunned on the traditional battlefield, Saddam is looking to fight back on his own terms. That, according to American officials, could mean any number of terror plots, from isolated assassinations of U.S. citizens overseas to biological or chemical attacks in the American heartland."

It will certainly cost us more to wait. And reading this interesting thread, I hope Americans realize that a substantial part of this war on terror may well be fought right here.

There is a new mosque not far from my brother's place of business in a Missouri town...he said to me that "they don't like us, not at all," meaning Americans...I've thought for a long time that mosques would be perfect hiding places for weapons of all kinds...

FairOpinion: A small team of Iraqi operatives could be injected with smallpox and sent to America

>>>>high confidence level at the time that the following scenario was in play: (1) mobile biological ordnance was either being manufactured or off-loaded from ships along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coasts, then...

Why 'sent' to America? They could very well launch 'from' American if the bioagents are already here.

>>>your scenario is plausible

Actually, it is more correct than plausible. "The spanish are sympathetic to our cause" is a direct quote from a First Ranked that I know.

"Amerika" was a mini-series with Kris Kristofferson. Perhaps you refer to the "cult classic" movie called "Red Dawn"?

The OKC Bombing Roundup--

This thread contains links to many of OKCSubmariner's articles. Fortunately, most are in the FR archives.

In my opinion, this is one of the best summaries of one of the most complex stories in our history.

No. Amerika is the mini-series I recall. There were Chinese and Mexicans coming up from the south. Of course, my memory may be mistaken, but I don't recall any such scene from Red Dawn.

However, if the question is, "Can Iraq make launch a militarily effective strike against America?" the answer is 'no.'

bump for the most intelligent post on this thread.

I don't have any sense that the Iraqi refugees you mention were involved. I had the sense that Iraqis were more at the general command and co-ordination level, and that those who were being pursued were, as I've said, "white supremacist" types, who were the favorite fall guys of the Clinton Justice Department. According to the info I received, most c&c was coming out of the Houston, Texas area with some things supposedly going down around Lafayette, Louisiana. I had conversations at different times with at least four different investigators at different levels. The reason was I had worked closely with a woman whos boy friend at the time was strategically placed inside USNI and was under suspicion for being a double agent for the Colombians, who supposedly were working with the Iraqis to ship the stuff through the drug networks. There was a big drug bust in the DFW area a few months earlier that had opened up this door. One guy involved in that operation was a company man. He was actually quoted by name in the press a few days ago (not on that, of course).

As for the general media getting hold of this information, I have seerioud doubts. I know for a fact that Newsweek had inside access and had a correspondent who was furiously probing it within a short period after the fact. Like the investigation, the story vanished from the radar. I think in this case the Clintonites and NYC officials (who were at each other's throats, incidentally) had a common interest at the time in not letting anything out. It would have embarrassed the hell out of the Clintonites (especially on the eve of a presidential election), and it would have scared the hell out of NYC. Since NYC ultimately couldn't do anything about it(though it was initially their case, the feds took it over rather heavy-handily), there would have been no gain in letting the matter go public. DOJ had Giuliani's people handcuffed and hogtied.

I would imagine if any enterprising reporter these days had some good sources from people who were privy of these matters in that era, he would just have to press hard, and the whole affair would come tumbling out. I don't blame anybody really. As far as I can tell, they couldn't get the specific names they were after to make the busts. Whoever had it is probably dead by now.

But an interesting coincidence did come out about a year or so ago. That alleged Hamas-front they raided in Richardson, Texas a few days before 911 (the computer company Infocom) had some interesting connections to all this. If you check out the background of Infocom, you find that they were supplying computer services to most of the Islamic mosques that were in areas under surveillance at the time and were targeted by the feds in Texas after 911. Infocom also held registration for the national domain name of - you guessed it - IRAQ. I myself believe Infocom is/was the key to a lot of stuff that's been going on.

I just wish it was a little later. I am so worried about mass casualties amongst the troops, let alone here in American cities.

Hey, I'm just thinking here, but maybe GWB's team started putting all these pieces together after 9/11, and that is what motivated them to pursue Iraq so heavily.

I just wish they could make the Iraq connections public, so everyone would know what a threat they are to us. But I know they have to play this close to the vest until the threat has passed.

Thanks again for typing all that up for us. It looks like you would be a great starting point for an ambitious reporter who'd like to "let it all spill out."

Can Iraq Hit America?

Of course it can, always could, and would have anyway in the very near future...IF we don't annihilate them completely NOW.

In the movie "Red Dawn," Central Americans and Soviets invade the US from the south (i.e. through Mexico). In the mini-series "Amerika" I recall the plot began with the President of the United States having surrendered to the Soviet Union without a fight, and that there were already gulags established throughout the US. I'll have to go to IMDb to research this.

Re the possibility of Iraqi operatives being sent to the U.S., injected with smallpox -- you make a great case for more profiling and border reinforcement/closure!

As it is, when I see ANY middle eastern people these days I give them a WIDE berth. This is particularly true of males between 18 and 45. Of course, this practice would not be considered politically correct but I don't give a rat's *ss!!! No one has EVER accused me of being politically correct.

The Cuban DGI used to be a kind of farm team for the KGB. I suspect that some of their people are sleeping here. Plus KGB and GRU types that decided not to go back to an uncertain future when the Soviet Union fell apart.
