>>and *over* Mach one! <<

Make it more interesting, have the jets popping in and out of mach like the f-18 mpeg we've all seen. That would create multiple booms and aid in unnerving everybody.

My brother had the job of frisking some of the Iraq soldiers that surrendered in "Operation Desert Storm".He didn't like to talk about it much, but he was definitely affected by what he saw.

I have no doubt these soldiers know what happened in "Operation Desert Storm".

I have read elsewhere on FR that someone said on tv yesterday that some Iraqis have tried to surrender but we have to send them back because the war hasn't started yet.

I trust they gave them white flags and told them to try again next week.

It feels very odd to go to war and feel pity for the poor cannon fodder on the other side.

When you are such a rotten guy that your own troops surrender before the war even starts, that is pretty sad.

this matches up with the other report about the allies running amok in western and southern Iraq....between seeing all these foreign troops and the additional bombing, what could they think...they don't want to die for Saddam

I don't understand it either .... it seems that we should be able to take them in as a humanitarian gesture if not as POWs. It may be that there is suspicion that they are booby-trapped, as someone suggested.

They have good reason to be terrified.

Terrified of having 72 virgins...

Well, I hope we sent them back with some instructions on what to do when the war starts. Looks like the Iraquis are as anxious for this to start as we are. They probably just got tired of waiting ;o)

from the link I just posted...

Special forces teams are even examining sites for holding the thousands of Iraqi troops who are expected to surrender at the first opportunity. During the last Gulf War, hundreds of coaches were hired to drive captured Iraqis to camps in Saudi Arabia, from where they were eventually released. This time the prisoners will be held in remote parts of Iraq itself.

Sounds like they've been trained well by the French.

Not defending them, but during DS, FrogDad had several hundred surrender to his unit. They were mostly forcibly-recruited raw kids. They had no water, food, boots, uniforms or committment. Only a gun and small amount of ammo.

There are probably a lot in the same boat today. Many of these will surrender at the first site of ANYONE not Iraqi - they don't want to be there in the first place.

Don't assume that this will be ALL or even most, by any means. The core of Sadmans army (Republican Guard) is fairly well-trained and committed. These are probably the ones our guys will meet if this conflict goes to urban warfare in Bagdad.

The chaff will be peeled off in the outlying areas fairly painlessly. It's later that it could get ugliest.

God bless and protect our armed forces, their leaders and their mission.

My son should have just touched down there with his group from the 101st

My most profound gratitude to you and your son for your sacrifice on my behalf.
