To make that feasible would have required INSTANT rule of law in Russia to attract Western investment into an area that hadn't seen capital expenditures, in real terms, in the O&G industry, since 1958.No bank was going to lend or joint venture made until property rights could be guaranteed.

You have to remember too, who the dullards were who set foreign policy back then. They were the "stability at any price crowd", such as Brent Scowcroft and Larry Eagleburger. Not exactly visionary Reganites.

Of all people, Joe Biden was making the Sunday rounds and he said that containment, in theory, sounds good but the problem is that countries will not keep up the containment. He pointed to France and Germany as example of the porous nature of containment.

I'll chalk up the word "containment" as another UN-speak word that looks good on paper but isn't practical in the real world.

I think New York sports columnist Mike Lupica is the greatest social wit this country has produced (LOL). Consider this gem from one of his annual "Year in Sports" columns from a few years back:

"If Al Sharpton became a boxing promoter, and Don King became a race-baiting 'civil rights' activist, would anything on these sports pages really change?"

This is the first official use of the "Q" word to describe the liberation of Iraq and we haven't fired a shot...

"Quagmire" would be a good word to describe the war in the United Nations, not Iraq.

Totally disagree. Bush was NOT off. Listened to the whole thing without the interruption of a thread. Bush was somber and perfect. Even the liberal announcers were impressed. My mother was in tears of agreement with Bush.

That's true, they don't understand. What is also not understood is that our best chance to avert war and accomplish our objectives, was to stand united with the Security Council in a global threat of force. France and Russia, in particular, eliminated our best shot at aversion all in the name of peace.

As you know, in politics, re-defining the way words are used helps your position and the Dems are masters of it.

And herein lies the proof of one of my original points -- if radical Islam were truly the greatest threat to the U.S. today, then the U.S. was fighting on the wrong side in 1991.

And my general point was that "right" and "wrong" side as far as human affairs go, changes over time, and invloves thousands of relevant players (people or groups that effectively choose their own course), not tens. The human condition is complex, chaotic and unpredictable.

Whew! I have now read this entire thread! (No applause is necessary.)

The President did very well. No stumbling, calm, controlled, and somber, as he should be on the brink of war. If he came on like a hot shot Saddam would probably launch a shot tonight.

People forget that we are trying to sneak up on him in plain sight. He thinks that we will be contained by the UN...and we need to keep him thinking that until the bombs start to drop.I am so glad and grateful that this man is our president. He is doing the very best job he can, and that is all we can ask.

Thanks for this thread, Howlin. It is interesting to read others' reactions after you have already seen the press conference.

Oh, and Bill Plante is really obnoxious, along with that fat bearded guy from CBS and Terry Moran. AND HELEN WAS IGNORED! Ha!

"We have no opinion on your Arab - Arab conflicts, such as your dispute with Kuwait. Secretary Baker has directed me to emphasize the instruction, first given to Iraq in the 1960's, that the Kuwait issue is not associated with America."

--- U.S. Ambassador April Glaspie, in a meeting with Saddam Hussein on July 29, 1990.

"Obviously, I didn't think, and nobody else did, that the Iraqis were going to take all of Kuwait."

--- U.S. Ambassador April Glaspie, in response to a question from a journalist who repeated her original quote to Hussein, September 2, 1990.

Nothing "tin-foil" about that one, is there?

"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may be even a worse fate: You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." ~Winston Churchill

"We will fight for whatever cause that betters our self-interest and which requires absolutely no courage." -- Interpretation of Chirac, 2003

Then our top priority now is to work on the words "filibuster" and "cloture."

George W. Bush

Pray for our President daily
It's the right thing to do
His burdens are larger than ever
And more troubles are about to ensue

Most powerful man in the world
Sounds wonderful but it's not
For him every waking minute
The fires are burning hot

His somber mein is not an act
Lives are on the line
Much rides on his every decision
Freedom for yours and mine

So take the time to lift him up
To the One Who is over all
And he'll come through and make us proud
With the strength to fulfill his call
