Ok, my son is ready to upgrade from his .22 (the one my dad gave me).

His requirements are 1000m accuracy, cheap ammo.

Our deal is I buy the hardware, he buys the optics.

1000$ limit ($800 rifle, $200 optics).

Ideas?

Please don't order a weapon without getting your hands on it first. You may not like these because they don't "feel" quite right. If your hand is freakishly large...you may want to go with a larger revolver or pistol. If your normal like me this may do you just fine. In any case, nothing beats a gun show. Try to go to a few before you decide.

The last time I even saw a 1000 meter range it was floating on a barge. I've never run across 1000 meters in any of the hunting that I have done here in the SE US, nor am I familiar with any ranges of that distance, although I am sure there are some. A long shot here is maybe 500 yards or so because of the tightness of the woods and the fact that shooting across roads is a no no. Most shots are under 300 yards.

Still, let me try to help. The spodefly solution: Get a Steyr SBS in .308 or 7mm RemMag (I chose 7mmRemMag). If you can find one used, then it should fit within that budget. Spend more than $200 on the scope -- Leupold 3.5 x 10 (or larger if possible) scope for a rifle like this, and he will be comfortable out to 500 meters easily at 1 MOA, and if you have a 1000 meter range to work with, then this combo will certainly handle it.

Here is what it might look like when you finish, although this particular one was a good bit over the $1K figure.

It's really easy to get a C&R license provided you have a clean background. It's $30 for 3 years, and lets you buy a whole bunch of stuff through the mail that would normally need to be sent to a dealer.

You have a C&R? I've been thinking of one for a number of years. I've just been wanting ot to ask a holder if the BATF gives a lot of trouble the way they sometimes do regular FFL holders first. And what about selling some of your collection off when you need to? All that background check and record stuff to mess with on C&R items?

Patton, I have seen one of these at our range, and it seemed to be a very good shooter! The owner was VERY please with it. Was shooting very well at 500m with some factory ammo, guy was itching to work up H/Ls for it. This might be what you are looking for....
Scopes are what you pay for, and how well you mount it! The best scope will not shoot well if not mounted well and the mounts lapped. My Tasco and BSA scopes shoot well, but I took a great deal of care in the mounting and lapping. This has been well worth the effort.

My love for Mauser started over thirty years ago when I bought one for twenty bucks as a gift for my wife. I "sporterised" it and discovered a wood stock that looked like birdseye maple.

And I kept it for myself. Got her a 30-30.

Loved the action, loved the way it shoots. Was lucky to have the big rings, fire the hot stuff through it, too.

I do love diversity, of guns, that is.

I'm actually considering buying the Savage 110 because it has a shorter barrel and it would be easier to carry. I hunt in West Texas where at times I have seen deer out this far but I'm not as hardcore as I used to be. A 1000M stroll in the mesquite and prickly pear is not my idea of fun anymore. I'm glad that others around here like these rifles too. 1000M is a little much for me, but if your son is willing by all means encourage him.

I can't honestly say what it takes to sell off part of your collection. I've never tried. I don't have that much - only a handful of guns - but enough that the $30 was more than worth it. Better than paying $25 to a dealer each time you want something.

I've never been hassled by the ATF. I'm not sure what they would do, quite honestly. Your only responsiblity is to keep a record of your guns, and who you sell them to if you get rid of them. However, I do understand that they will get on your case if you start acting like a dealer. This license is for personal use; not to start a small firearms shop.

In the mail, you are treated as if you were a full FFL holder. The $30 probably barely covers the packet of stuff they send you when you get the license. (Rulebooks, forms, pamphlets, etc.)

Bottom line: it's easy to get and it really is no big deal. I just wanted a few guns and was sick of paying the fees to someone else. My license ends in about 9 months. I have what I want, and I'll let it lapse.

get yourself a nice used k frame smith and wesson chambered in 22 long rifle. Then get some hogue rubber grips for it and have a gunsmith do a nice trigger job on it.

You'll have a blast with it.



P.S. You don't have to get the grips and the trigger job right away.

Take it to the gunsmith and have THEM rebore the chamber to fit 7.62X54. Cheap ammo, decent rifle, long range.

I assume you mean 7.62x54R? Be verrrry carefull, nost of that ammo is com bloc and has a .310 bullet, not a .308 like western 30 caliber.

Won't quite do 1000m with extreme accuracy, but my recommendation would be a heavy barrel Savage (110?) or Rem 700 VS in 308. Add a Bushnell Elite 4200 8-32x scope ($419 at http://www.swfa.com/riflescopes/bushnell/elites/elite4200/). By the time you add rings for the scope you will come in around $1000-1100.

Get him an RCBS Rockchucker starter kit for reloading (takes care of the cheap ammo). Probably total around $1300, but really hard to get good equipment for less than that. Good optics cost at least as much as a decent rifle. The Bushnell Elite 4000 is probably the best scope for the money.

Also spend some money for a Dewey cleaning rod and for gods sake get a bore guide for cleaning! Most folks don't have a clue how to properly clean a rifle...freepmail me if you want some cleaning tips.
