KEL-TEC 5.56 mm SU-16 SPORT UTILITY RIFLE

INTRODUCTION The name is not an attempt to capitalize on a popular concept but is a truly appropriate designation.

The SU-16 is a gas operated, self-loading rifle in .223 Remington caliber. Several unique features make the SU-16 a versatile sporting firearm.

~An integrated Picatinny rail for mounting different sight systems.

~The forend folds down to form a bipod for increased accuracy.

~The stock can store spare magazines. Two 10 rounds clips or one 20 or 30 rounds.

~The stock and trigger mechanism can be folded forward for added safety and to facilitate secure storage or carry under extreme conditions.

The SU-16 has a conventional gas piston operation and utilizes the proven M-16 breech locking system. It is compatible with standard M-16 magazines. The reciprocating bolt handle and magazine catch are on the right side, while the push bolt safety can be changed to work from either side.

Except for barrel, bolt and mechanism the SU-16 is made entirely of high impact reinforced polymer.

Hmm neat looking and seems to be CA legal.

Bill Lockyer can add this rifle to the list of banned rifles in California with a PostIt note to Randy Rossi. It won't take 10 minutes. He already has legislative authority to add new firearms as an internal administrative act.

One of my kids got a 9mm KelTec DA pistol and at first I thought it would be junk.

I was really wrong.

After shooting the KelTec we both like it much better than a Colt Pocket 9 we have in the family and the more I've read about the KelTec,the more I'm sold on their dependability.It's a sweet little carry gun or backup if you want DA only.

If this new KelTec gets some good reviews,I'll sure take a look at it.

I used to shoot .22 rifles at school which I really enjoyed.

I'd really like to get back into the hobby now although I think I'd like to move on from the .22.

Can anyone recommend a nice rifle that would be most suitable for both myself and my 11 year old daughter to start off with at the range and perhaps go hunting with later on.

I am a complete novice so forgive my ignorance.

ehhh... it's a nice concept, has lots of nice features, and comes from a good manufacturing firm, but... I'll stick to my bullpup AK47.

Listening to C-SPAN Radio yesterday heard an interesting discussion on the M-16. Several points made:
In the desert using gun oil isn't a great idea.

The AK-47 tolerances are lose enough (less likely to jam) that it was a preferred weapon during Desert Storm.

One of the reasons the M-16 jammed early on was that a cheaper powder was used in the ammunition which resulted in faster fouling of the weapon requiring more frequent cleaning.

Lastly, Troops deploying to Afganistan prefer the M-14 over the M-16.

An AR-15 is a good rifle, low recoil, legal hunting caliber, and ammo is reasonably inexpensive. Unfortunatly the AR-15 is kind of pricey.

I still haven't heard back from them about the Gas/Piston question. I went shooting yesterday, for the first time in months, with the locals from AR15.com. They scouted out a gravel pit down past Olympia (nice 2+ hr. drive for me each way.) that was perfect. One direction had 390yrds for rifle fire and if you wanted to shoot pistols you face the other way in the box and had out to 50 yards. We had some gongs made out of a Helium tank cut in half that now look like cheese graters. A funny thing for me was I couldn't hit jack with my AR15 at 100 yards but I could pound the sh!+ out of the bowling pins at 300 yds. I guess know whites of their eyes for me. And as is typical for us in the gun culture their were 20 of us and about 100 weapons including about 45 rifles. Here is our group photo.

That funky bipod vaguely resembles Jeff Cooper's Scout Rifle built by Steyr
I don't know if I care much for Kel-Tec's folding stock...
But I certainly know that I prefer the Scout's .308 to the wimpy .223.
