Elaborate about the caliber, please.

.223 just happens to be my favorite all-around rifle caliber. Great range, sufficient stopping power, ammo readily available at reasonable prices. My Ruger Mini-14 is probably my favorite long gun.

I tried a little experiment with my "Sport Utility Rifle" at the range about
two weeks ago. Shooting from a standing position with a "Hasty sling" to hold
the rifle a little tighter, I dumped 60 rounds at a man sized silhouette target
at 65 yards {indoor range} & 53 of the rounds hit in the black. It looked more
like a shotgun pattern than a rifle group but there were a lot of hole in that
target {frest target no holes covered by markers}. ...

The kinds of 223s being shot in competition these days aren't wimpy. They're using bullets anywhere from 77 - 90+ grains and hitting things out to 1000 yards. That, of course, requires a much faster twist than a normal M16.

Other than that, 308 is probably the most generally useful rifle calibre. If you could only have one rifle, it almost has to be a 308.

There really isn't anything that would fit you AND your 11 year-old.

The best thing would be a couple of target .22s, one to fit each of you. If you are lucky enough to live near an outdoor range with a NRA smallbore competition program you will be more than welcome to participate. Most clubs have several loaner rifles of various types that nobody ever uses. If you do participate, you may find that your first purchase is not a rifle but a shooting coat, mitt, mat and possibly a spotting scope if no loaners are available.

The best shooters on this planet have all shot and excelled at smallbore at some point in their careers.

You're partially correct. The original AR-15 was designed for a specific powder that gave it a firing rate that was "30-40" rounds per minute less than the Army wanted. It used a powder that was not then currently being used by the army and they didn't want to make any changes.
Plus, the rifle was not invented by them and the old "Not invented here" syndrome came into play. They added a bolt, changed the powder and said: "Here's what we can do!!!'
The powder change gummed up the works and they would not admit their mistakes. Cost a lot of lives.

It's called an M4gery (forgery) because the flash hider is fake (or if you don't have one at all and the buttstock is pinned in place.

I don't think Rock River Arms would make 'em if you couldn't legally own one.
