First Inmate Back on Illinios Death Row

A jury on Wednesday issued Illinois' first death sentence since then-Gov. George Ryan emptied death row with a blanket clemency last month.

The jury ruled Anthony Mertz should be executed for killing a 21-year-old Eastern Illinois University student after he broke into her off-campus apartment in June 2001.

Ryan commuted all 167 of Illinois' death sentences in the days before he left office, reducing most to life in prison. The unprecedented decision brought international attention to a state system where 17 people sent to death row had been cleared since the death penalty was reinstated in 1977.

Bwahahaha! In your face, George Ryan!! Screw your "legacy". The state's attoneys of Illinois 102 counties will CONTINUE to EXECISE our death penalty laws. We will NEVER abolish capital punishment no matter what George and his criminal-loving buddies want. I don't care if we're the only "black" state is a sea of "white" states (Wisconsin's Damner got what was coming to him anyway) We will continue to try and retry every one of George's murdering buddies and someday that scumbag S.O.B. George Ryan (who certainly understands the "plight" of murderers since he is responcible for 9 deaths himself) will be behind bars too.

P.S. Clarification for freepers outside Illinois (especially Texans):

We Illinoisians did NOT elect an anti-death penalty governor. EVERY single candidate that campaigned on a wimpy pro-criminal "abolish the dealth penalty" stance has LOST the governor's race here. Lyin' Ryan campaigned as a PRO-capital punishment candidate and then did a 180o turn in office. His corruption and broken campaign "promises" are why the jerk had a 20% "approval" rating. Now it's time for him to get his just desserts.

It will take 20+ years to get him executed.

Wisconsin's Damner got what was coming to him anyway

Are you referring to Jeffrey Dahmer, the homosexual serial killer? What happened to him?
