Norquist's group took seed money from an avowed supporter of Hezbollah, the terrorist group that killed 241 US Marines in a 1983 Beirut bombing.

A prominent conservative leader who allegedly has used undeclared foreign money and top political connections to promote terrorist sympathizers is an 'enabler' who threatens 'to do grave harm to the Bush presidency.'

Center for Security Policy President Frank Gaffney issued the warning in a letter to Grover Norquist, founding chairman of the Islamic Institute, after Norquist publicly accused Gaffney of 'racism and bigotry' and banished him from a weekly strategy group. Norquist's actions came in response to Gaffney's criticism of a White House official who allowed pro-terrorist Muslim groups access to the White House complex on January 16.

'People who afford terrorist-supporters or -apologists and their organizations entree into the White House deserve to be both challenged and criticized,' Gaffney wrote in response. Norquist, an anti-tax activist and Washington networker who often purports to speak in the name of President Bush, told Gaffney in a widely distributed letter that the Center for Security Policy leader was guilty of 'racial prejudice, religous bigotry or ethnic hatred' because the criticized official is a Muslim.

In response, Gaffney and American Conservative Union leader David Keene slammed Norquist for 'employing "Stalinist tactics" against those who disagree with Mr. Norquist's role in brokering access to the Bush White House,' the Washington Times reported on February 7.

Norquist has been criticized for promoting what is called the Wahhabi lobby, a Saudi-funded network designed to dominate and radicalize Islam in America, at the expense of other Muslim groups whose stand against terrorism is unequivocal.

'Why have you gone to such lengths to defend - to say nothing of legitimize and advance the agendas of - terrorist sympathizers and others hostile to everything for which American conservatives stand?' Gaffney asked Norquist in a responding letter. Gaffney listed his concerns:

* The Islamic Institute, which Norquist co-founded and houses in his Americans for Tax Reform office, received seed money from an avowed supporter of Hezbollah, the terrorist group that killed 241 US Marines in a 1983 suicide bomb attack.

* The Islamic Institute reportedly is 'predominantly funded by foreign governments, shady Saudi sources, and US-based groups raided by the Treasury Department-led Operation Green Quest Task Force for allegedly funding suicide bombers, al Qaeda and other terrorists' activities.'

* Norquist led conservative opposition to parts of the Bush administration's anti-terrorism legislation, without disclosing that his Islamic group was dependent on such funds.

* Norquist has affiliated himself with the radical National Committee to Protect Political Freedom (NCPPF), from which he received an award shortly before the September 11, 2001 attacks, despite the group's thirty-year public track record of promoting domestic and international terrorism.

* Norquist reportedly introduced Sami Al-Arian, whom federal law enforcement officials say is a leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, to then-candidate George W. Bush during the 2000 campaign. Televised videotape shows Al-Arian raising money in the US for terrorists.

What's the point of all this exactly?

That exposing and marginalizing elements of the "wahhabi lobby" is as important in the war on terrorism as exposing and marginalizing communist front orgs and individuals was in the cold war. Additionally, moderate/modernist/(non-extremist) traditionalist Muslims will not trust us, and are less apt to offer their much needed help, if they see us mainstreaming wahhabist or other extremist groups and individuals.

I feel that there are some "Christians" whose views are the mirror image of those that claim to be killing infidels in the name of their God and would do so if given half a chance. Thank God Bush does not feel that way. He is killing those that would kill us and God has NOTHING to do with it other than to judge the result at a later time.

What are we to make of the fact that a Muslim extremist (or "Islamist") named Dr. Sami Al-Arian was arrested and indicted last week on 50 counts, among them conspiracy to finance terrorist attacks that killed more than 100 people — including two Americans? One thing is sure: It is not, as Mr. Al-Arian claimed when federal agents led him away in handcuffs, "all about politics."

The question, in short, is not whether "politics" are responsible for Sami Al-Arian's prosecution for aiding and abetting terror? The question is: What considerations, political or otherwise, prompted members of Mr. Bush's staff to believe Mr. Al-Arian was the kind of person they wanted on their team? Who bears responsibility for making those calculations? And are they continuing to do so with respect to other individuals and organizations that could, at the very least, embarrass Mr. Bush and, at worst, seriously undermine his efforts in the war on terror?

Whoever is responsible, their behavior has seriously disserved President Bush, and risks becoming more than a mere political liability if it is allowed to persist.

While you are correct in saying that the Clinton Administration was hip deep in this, it's also true that Norquist has been a bought and paid for Wahabbi lobbyist for years.

I clearly remember a 1999 article by Norquist in The American Spectator, of all places, pumping Arab-American voters as the group that would put the Republicans on top.

At least Norquist seems to be the type of toady who, once bought, stays bought.

Jim, at one time, you yourself questioned Bush's stances, the elder's, and the younger's during the primaries. Then in order to win back the White House and the Senate you adapted a policy of being much less tolerant of anything contrary to Dubya -- those offices have been won. George W. Bush has shown himself to be a great leader, honest, humble, shrewd, and honorable.

That doesn't mean he's perfect. That doesn't mean we shouldn't keep our eyes and ears open. We give him the great benefit of the doubt, and should -- because of his proven record so far.

More-over we know Bush has tactical and strategic issues of statecraft and war to deal with absolutely unknown to us. Especially right now, when we are almost certain to be at full war with Iraq in days. As Commander, Bush MUST take steps needed to pursue that war in a way that guarentees its success yetminimises loss of life. That means he has to keep the Arabs placated, and the Turks firmly on our side.

All that being said -- we have some powerful and connected folks in the political lobbying and PR business who have taken the enemy's coins knowing that by doing so, more of our and our allies blood will be shed by spewing decisiveness and confusion.

IMHO, the best thing that could happen is if every jake of that class of curs became absolutely afraid to touch another bloody coin, or even to be in the same state as one of our enemies agents.

Ostrasizing -- shunning -- isolation -- is a weapon, and it best be wielded against those coming to harm us -- not against our friends.
