[history]
An Alexandria gun dealer said the man who killed two police officers Thursday "had a death wish" and most likely used "the urban weapon of choice" -- an AK-47, a weapon that is popular among criminals and gang members.
Mark Harlan, the owner of Liberty Firearms Sales, said until two years ago he sold fully and semi automatic weapons. However, he had a change of heart as he grew older and no longer sells such powerful weapons.

Got that right. I have a C&R license, and I'm getting sick and tired of all the initial cleaning that needs to be done with the C&R guns on the market today. They seem to be getting worse and worse. I'm seriously considering simplifying my rifles, dumping anything not 7.62x39mm. Then I can drop cash on something like a VEPR.

I would suggest to you buying an STG-58 rifle, or a good FN/FAL rifle. They both fire the .308 Winchester round and will cost you around $700 to $1000. The twenty round magazines are not too expensive.
Springfield M-1A is also a good choice. This rifle also shoots .308 Winchester. The M-1A will cost you around $1,100 to $1,500 and the 20 round magazines run about $60 each.
I own a Springfield M-1A and love it.

LOL.......It was really hard to shoot a few hundred thousand rounds in an afternoon...... I know I have tried !!

The first thing to do with an SKS is to tear down the bolt carrier and thoroughly clean the firing pin and the channel where it rides.
kAcknor Sez:
Thank you for that. I have a SKS "on the way" (Promised anyway, for my B-day) as soon as the next gun show. Not that I wouldn't have done a complete tear-down & check, but I'll pay special attention to the bolt.

".....weapons like the AK-47 can be sold for $250 and higher." We was robbed!
I "hear tell" that "some enterprising grunts" would sell Chinese AK-47s to the Sailors that brought the supply boats up river - for a small quantity of beer, whisky or similar "un-requisitioned goods"..
A Russian or Czechoslovakian AK-47 would bring a much better deal......

I would give the barrel a scrub down with some BreakFree CLP before your first trip to the range with the new rifle. It may be "new in the box" and covered with some preservative. They are really nice rifles. Mine is Romanian. BTW, don't try to put Williams Fire Sights on a Romanian model. The front post geometry is wrong. It was made for Russian and Chinese SKS rifles. The Williams peep sight with the .015 aperture is a nice enhancement.

I'll do that. As far as sights go, I always used what came stock. I figured if I could see it, I could hit it. That was fine until my eyes betrayed me and now it's a scope or shoot to 50 yards. ;)
We have a few vendors around here that have taken their SKS's to an ultrasonic cleaner. You pay a few bucks more for it, but the thing is CLEAN.
What I'll end up with is a Yogo with the grenade launcher. I've read they aren't too bad. The thing is a toy/homeland defence item until I can afford to get something better (Don't tell Mrs. kacknor that last part..;).

The last time I shot my SKS was at my indoor range in San Diego. It was holding a quarter size 10 shot group at 25 yards. The Remington 700PSS in .308 was going through a single ragged hole at that distance.

Any freepers know these guys? I wonder if they actually exist. That was my first thought, too. I honestly don't think I have ever read a story with so much misinformation and outright lies, and this can't possibly be a coincidence. When was the last time anybody heard of cops going to a gun dealer to buy "assault shotguns" for their patrol cars?

The sad part is that the author doesn't realize that anyone with the slightest knowledge of the field is rolling on the ground with laughter. You're missing the point,Bill. The author doesn't give a damn. The article is aimed at the ignorant who believe without question what they read in the papers, not gun owners. He's manilupating the public, not informing them.

I would suggest to you buying an STG-58 rifle, or a good FN/FAL rifle. The STG-58 IS a FN-FAL. Maybe even the most desirable one.

We was robbed! You could sell SKS's for that to REMF's in VN in 68 and 69. Even more if you bothered to shoot a few holes in the wood and drip some chicken blood on it.
SKS's were getting damn hard to find by then, though.Every SOB you ran into had either a AK-47 or a RPD.

here are some more brilliant quotes from our hero....
from
http://www.thetowntalk.com/html/DAB17A46-7C69-447E-8FCB-1A1EEA75628E.shtml
Harlan runs Liberty Firearm Sales. He said he has had one person purchase an AK-47 since the attack, but that's all.
"Everybody was well armed because of Y2K," he said. "People that were going to buy one already had them."
Harlan said most people understand that arming themselves against a foreign enemy doesn't do any good.
"No one's concerned because you can't fight someone in another country" with a gun at home, he said.

Probably.
I'm amazed, like others here, that the article was even printed...
But, it was probably written by a rather rabid anti-gunner.
So facts mustn't get in the way.

You've never seen the "searer gears" in the AK? You have to look real hard, as they're hidden under the flazjack lever and pully assembly. Heh heh!
