This is my daughter the art major, who has managed to remain conservative through four years of college with the nose-ring, purple-hair crowd. I am very proud of her. And I thought she might be spot on about those pantsuits. Somebody on the Rather/Saddam thread said that he expected to see her getting out of a German staff car any day now! HA!
You should be so proud of your daughter! I was an art major too and stayed away from the psychedelic art crowd. We had stupid profs back then who tried to get us to demonstrate against the war but I stayed away from that and most of my classmates did too. I have one daughter who is in lawschool and has had the audacity to argue the pro-life side in class. My youngest daughter is an Interior Design major. My son, who is a West Point grad and a conservative too. Proud of them all.

1. State the may be absens of quorum
2. Call initial roll
3. State there is indeed an absence of quorum
4. Call roll again
5. Go get those who are absent.
( Those who notice some where apparently hiding under their desk, are probably correct. If "A" isn't there than "B" must be or if a REP isn't there than a dem must be. Keeps them up and unable to sleep.

this is when the filibuster begins. He might call another quorum after this and then say that the Senate will stay until they get the 60 votes.

I've read your very good explanation of what's going on....now...would you do it again? (I'm really dense this time of night and I want to make sure I understand.)

Frist knows they will object no matter the date or time .. now I'm trying to figure out what is next He's going to keep them there and keep calling quorum and push the issue.
Everytime he calls Quorum, it's 15 minutes and sufficient numbers have to be present. This is poker.

It seems to me that Frist called for the 6pm vote on Monday aas a gesturee to the Dims so that he could say we offered to vote next week but they turned it down.

But our guys won't be getting any sleep either, will they?

Can we inject even more spice into this thread by debating how Lott would have handled this? Simple. He would have allowed Daschle to appoint three judges for every one Judge appointed by Bush.

Frist could continue to do this until all the Senators are present and then some Republican will disappear and he could do it again!

yeah, but in Utah - I used to say "blueberries" when I was REALLY REALLY mad?
That's what we said when I was in Provo anyhow.
PLUS, didn't Jay Golden Kimball set a few Utah standards while at an LDS pulpit? heheheh

Do we have any Senate parlimentarians here? I think I heard somewhere that in a "classic" fillibuster - I think it was a Novak column actually - the Majority Leader has the power to order the Sargent at Arms to COMPELL the presence of all Senators - for as long as he choses, 24/7.
1 - Am I right or wrong about this?
Is Frist doing this right now?
To: woofie
I don't know what First has in mind. If he doesn't recess the senate and leaves the nomination on the floor as the topic then yes it's started. He may choose to recess or let them continue debating. I don't know what his motives are at this point. My guess is he's pushing them a bit. I'm sure he knows if he's got the 60 votes for cloture or not.
To: 4ConservativeJustices
wouldn't it be funny if after Frist forces every dem to come in...he lets them wait around for a few hours...then, when they see nothing is happening and leave...he calls for another quorum about 30 mins after the majority of them leave the senate, just as they are taking their shoes off, getting ready to plop in bed, they need to go back up...he could call for the quorums all night...mwahahaha! That would be so brilliantly evil ;) Someone find his voicemail and let's suggest it. :) :) :)
To: wolf24
Good question. I wonder what he is thinking right now."Lott's thoughts"...; now there's an oxymoron for you....

A third Quorum call? WTF? Okay, I'm a little arriving at this "party"...but, what's a "quorum call", and what's Frist's objective? (Please ;*) )
