Estrada Senate Debate Continues - Live thread
C-Span 2 | Feb. 24, 2003

Posted on 02/24/2003 10:16:15 AM PST by Ragtime Cowgirl

Debate resumes for the nomination of Miguel Estrada. Live on C-Span 2 now.

Nomination to the judiciary of Miguel Estrada, Feb. 24, 2003:

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tx) first to speak:

"I rise at the beginning of the third week of Senate debates.."

"Many of us were not here when I believe these perceived slights occured."
(referring to comments overheard on the floor, "What's good for the goose is good for the gander." etc.

"I'm also concerned with the double standards."

"It must be a terrible (?) for those who obstruct (this nomination). For them to win, the American dream must lose."

"Precious Senate time, energy and attention that could have been devoted to getting the Nation's business done has simply been delayed."

Re. those who will not even allow Miguel a vote: "A truly selfish and unprecidented act."

"The Democratic leadership's strategy is clear. Delay Mr. Estrada's nomination indefinitely in the hopes that Mr. Estrada's supporters will give up.."

"Much of our time has simply been devoted to cleaning up the mess left to us under their leadership."

"The Democratic leadership seems obsessed with obstructing (Mr. Estrada's nomination) and I wonder why that is."

"When I was back home in Texas last week...I read an editorial from the Dallas Morning News that perhaps gives us some clue...There is a time for talking and a time for voting. The time has passed for talking...."

"There is only one thing the Democratic leadership can do to stop him...that is to change the rules and create an unfair double standard."

"The American people will not stand for such unfair and childish behavior from the Senate."

"As the Austin Amer. Statesman" has editorialized, if the Dems. have something substantive to block Miguel's nomination, it's high time they show it." (paraphrased)

Sen. Cornyn's doing a fine job once again summarizing the situation - Miguel's exceptional qualifications, Democrats' rattiness.

Most important message to the Democrats (and us) from Sen. Cornyn, imho, is his view that the Dems. are waiting for US to give up. We need to double our calls and letters.

I wrote Kohl and Feingold telling them not to fillibuster Estrada. However, I also told them that if they did fillibuster, I would at least take satisfaction in knowing that the Senate would not be passing any appropriations bills.

It is good to see one of my Senators on the floor right now - speaking for the nomination of Miguel Estrada!

I did send both Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn and told them both, I wanted to see them on the Floor of the Senate to fight for this nomination. :o)

Senator Bill Nelson's (D-FL) office says he is not sure how he will vote but he is NOT for the fillibuster. Senator Bob Graham (D-FL) is still recovering from heart surgery.

it's getting to the point where I hope Bill Nelson OPPOSES Estrada. That would make a great campaign issue. Of course, the problem is, what if he doesn't get a chance to vote for him. Then he can pull a Landrieu, claim he supported Estrada, and after the election, well, we know how that goes!

San Fran is having a candlelight vigil for Estrada, check other thread!

Encouraging on Nelson of Florida... perhaps some first breaks in the ice.

To date, we have Breaux, Miller, Nelson (NB), and presumably now Nelson of Florida on board. 51+4=55; 5 more to go.

Freepers should put the heat on Hollings; Blanche Lincoln; Pryor; Carper; Feingold; Wyden; and Bingaman.

FREEPers, I have created the ultimate Estrada activism thread. On it you will find ways to contact Senators, newsspapers, radio/tv people, organizations etc. Go there and help support Estrada. Keep the thread bumped until we get him confirmed.

Good tag line, Meekie. (^;,p>
"The FBI has investigated Mr. Estrada and given him a clean bill of health."

"The American Bar Association has investigated and given him their highest rating." (closely paraphrased)

"I submit that our colleagues who oppose the vote on this highly qualified  candidate have changed the rules and opposed a double standard."

Sen. Cornyn's doing a fine job of clearly laying out the case for Miguel.

Please call my two Fla. Senators. (^:

Yes, all Indiana freepers raise Hell with Bayh's office for this Democratic obstructionism. He can play a pivotal role in stopping this nonsense.
