LOL! This made my day. I love to read the opinions of the NY Post thanks to editorials like this one. I bet that the same point could be made about Kalifornia's rich people! It couldn't happen to nicer folks. Thinking that Hollywood money may be moving to the Bush states is sweet justice indeed!

Its not only the southern states getting the money. The great state of North Dakota gets over a buck and a half back on every dollar they send to Washington. That was one of Congressman Earl Pomeroy's talking points when he was running for reelection. He won. So much for the "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country" wing of the Democratic Party.

I have noted this before, as well. The Bush states are indeed the welfare junkies. Of the 19 states which went for Gore in 2000, a majority (12) pay more to the feds than they get. Of the 31 states which went for Bush in 2000, 23 states get more from the feds than they pay to the federal government.

I really don't see the REPs reducing the size and intrusiveness of government. We have socialism now, and we'll get to communism just a bit slower with them.

Progressive income taxation also plays a role. High earnings per capita states like New York, California and Connecticut are going to pay more in income taxes. I wonder if this is strategery on Rove's part with respect to tax policy? Make inroads on swing voters in traditionally RAT states?

Dont be so sure about California. Dont laugh. California elected Ronald Reagan governor. Greyout Davis is in trouble (unfortunately so is the local REP party, they are so busy fighting each other, they cant see straight).

Simon got close, in spite of his ineptness. The depression here in the PRK might help fiscal conservatives. Yes, depression. We are structured to have signficant unemployment for the foreseeable future. All the web stuff has been built. It was a big project, but is done now and in maintenance. The San Jose area is not going to return soon. San Diego has areospace and it is doing OK. War work will continue for the next few years at least. LA is harder for me to figure. I live 90 miles away, but rarely go there. The Central Valley is also in depression. 15% unemployment is not uncommon (I know I am originally from Fresno County and still have ties there).

Actually NY is in even worse shape than that because underlying this analysis is the assumption that a dollar is New York is the same thing as a dollar in North Dakota.

Visit realtor.com and compare a similar size house with similar size lot and when it comes to buying houses you will find that a Westchester County dollar is only worth about a tenth of a Fargo dollar.

As Freepers well know one of the secrets to a comfortable retirement is to sell your high cost real estate and move to a low cost area.

Rove thought that California was winnable in 2000 and see what happened. If anything, a depression would tend to favor democrats in 2004.

Now, in 2003 they are all living in the South and polluting our lakes, crowding our highways and sucking all that money from the Feral Gubmint, to say nothing about trying to steal our elections.

I know you are, and God bless you for it. I myself made my "escape from NY" a few years ago and my parents and other relatives are still there. I still think it's poetic justice that the people who came up with all the "redistribution" (i.e. robbery) schemes are now paying for it.

I have a modest proposal. New York gets to keep all of its tax money and they agree to remove their congressional delegation from our House of Representatives. I think the rest of the country would be grateful! The funny thing is that they aren't worried about individuals being taxed to death for redistribution, just the fact that the redistribution isn't being made to others in their state.

If there is no more money at the federal teat, and state taxes are high, what else can you do but cut services. Then people get mad because you cut the WRONG services. Schools will suffer here in the PRK, at least in the short run. Then folks will start to ask - "Do we really need the State Coastal Commission?" or "Do we really need those costly gun laws/zoning ordinance/job killing family leave act/etc.?" At least that's where I want us to drive the debate. We might even get some freedom back in the process. Unlike the US in the Depression, we don't have the ability to errect tarrifs and don't have overly restrictive monetary policy to hinder us. We have other problems of course, like how the feds beggar the state by having us provide foreign aid to Mexico, but that is another story.
