They used to call Ft. Lewis, Ft. Ord and Ft. Carson the Golden Triangle.

Ft. Lost in the Woods. Where even the snakes have ticks!

Never forget being on a field problem once on a moonless night. We're in the middle of bum-fiddle and suddenly we hear the most unusual gutteral, moan-growl noise you ever heard coming out of the bush about 30 feet off somewhere. The old man was next to me (he was a city-slicker) and said "Sgt. B. what kind of animal is that???

Although I had spent most of my life out in the sticks I had to tell him I didn't have a clue. I put a magazine in and slid the selector to rock-n-roll. It was freaking hilarious how fast the rest of the guys locked and loaded. You never saw a platoon un-a** an AO as fast as we did that night. Still don't know what kind of critter it was or what made it make that funky sound.

Although I've been out of the active army loop for a while, I highly recommend you stay away from the east coast if at all possible. (especially DC) From what I hear the schools are awful and it's almost mandatory to send kids to private schools. (which of course aren't cheap) For low cost of living look at the South. For high quality of outdoor lifestyle Ft Carson and Ft Lewis are hard to beat but are both in pretty expensive places. Honestly though, CONUS was too much of a dog and pony show for me. My best times in the Army were overseas.

Ft. Ord. Too bad it's gone. Best O-club was at Benning. Best scenery was Ft. Lewis. I'd rate Carson highly, too. But I digress.

Fort Bragg/Pope Air Force Base, North Carolina... with several Air Bases in the hub rotation within 1-hour drive and Camp Lejeune nearby....! North Carolina's military bases (I worked at Bragg, Pope and Lejeune) are all top notch and have some of the Nation's most motivated warriors.

Your chart stops at Missouri. People might remember, Ft. Drum, Ft. Dix, Indian Town Gap, Carlisle Barracks, Ft. Bliss, Ft. Belvoir, Ft. Monroe, Ft. Eustis, Ft. Story, etc.

I did my AIT at Ft. Huachuca and absolutely loved it. It didn't hurt that it was October through March that I spent there instead of at home in frigid New Jersey. The 18 year old drinking age was also a welcome feature.

Army wife here. We've done Ft. Sill, Ft. Knox, Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Hood, and Schofield Barracks x2 (where we want to retire). Schofield hands down is absolutely the best. You have access to all commissaries on the island (Pearl, Hickam, Schofield, Kaneohe), the best med center in the Army (Tripler), plus the most gorgeous climate in the world.

Each of the other places we've been have had their good points and bad. The biggest disadvantage of all of them except Schofield/Tripler has been medical care (think dialing for dollars when it comes to appointments, particularly specialty clinics).

My husband would tell you to absolutely avoid Polk like the plague. Some of the others are dependent on what sort of weather you like, whether you're single or married, etc.

Schofield barracks in Hawaii.

Redeployed there from Vietnam in October '69. Mai-tai's, beaches, no one shooting at you and the laid-back atmosphere. Life was good (and still is).

As a civilian (Former USAF Brat) I have to highlight Camp Blanding, about 20 miles south of JAX in the middle of the real Florida (Conservative, Christian, Football Crazy) The scenery may be familiar as "Jane Doe" was filmed here. The camp is on beautiful Kingsley Lake, not too far from Gold Head Branch State Park.

My experience is limited since I only served in the National Guard with just one extended active duty time, but I loved Fort Hood, TX. It's an hour from Austin, and two hours from Dallas. Killeen is a decent sized city with plenty to do(for a single guy anyway).

Post to avoid like the plague: Fort Polk, LA. There is no middle ground, it's either too hot or too cold. Every single RA type I ever ran into has called it the worst post in CONUS. Throw in the fact that Leesville is better known as "Sleazeville" and you start to get the picture. Best place to party is over two hours away in Lafayette.

The best choice, for you & the family, is Carlisle Barracks, PA - home of the US Army War College. There are 3 JAG slots on the garrison side of the house & an unknown number on the school side. Nice community, good schools, and you will have the opportunity for more school at Dickinson School of Law - they offer an advanced degree in law (something over and above the JD - forgive me, I am not a lawyer & do not pretend to understand the educational system). I served here in the early & mid 90's. The result was seeing the Army's best and brightest senior leaders. I watch Fox News now & see the same folks in the role or "RET. Military Analyst" Because this is a small post, you will have about ZERO competition to get here. Plus, it may help you get a seat in a War College Class some where down the line. I'm not a fan of ticket-punching, but I also know the reality of the Army. Best of luck to you & thank you for serving our nation & the Army.
