I was stationed at Ft. Ord in the late 80's with the 7th ID (Light) and I thought it was a great place to stationed. Right on the Monterey Bay, near Pebble Beach and Carmel, it was in an incredibly beautiful area. Year around temp's between the 50's and 70's. It is too bad they decided to close the post, but I understand it was the most expensive major post in the States to run at the time it was closed.

OTHO, Ft. Hunter Liggett, where the 7th would often train, sucked big time. I think that place is closest thing you can find to Afghanistan in the U.S.
